CCSU Lesson Plan Template

Student Teacher: Kimberly Larsen

Grade Level: 3
Lesson Date: 9/23/15
Name of Lesson: Reduce Reuse and Recycle!
Common Core State Standard(s)
3.1.4 Earth materials provide resources for all living things, but these resources
are limited and should
be conserved.

Student Learning Objective(s)

Consider if there are students who will require an accommodation or modification to meet this
lessons objective.
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify objects that can be reduced, reused,
recycled and be able to
understand what the three terms mean. Students will be able to
create their own lists of items in their own life that
They can reduce, reuse, or recycle.

Rationale for Objective: How does this lesson support previous and subsequent learning?
Students were previously learning about what types of resources earth has, and the
different ways we use
them. Students are also informally aware of recycling in society.

Assessment
State the specific strategy (ies) and tool(s) used to collect the data for each SLO (i.e., essays,
projects, quizzes, exit slip, worksheet, etc.). Are there students who will require an
accommodation or modification to this lessons assessment?
Students will be informally assessed of their understanding during the class discussion after
reading the story
The Lorax. Students will be formally assessed on their concluding worksheets with the lists of
items in their own lives
That they can reduce, reuse, or recycle. The assessment can be done verbally if a student is
unable to write their own
terms. Otherwise this lesson is discussion based with classroom collaboration that all students
should participate in.

Classroom Learning Environment Focus

(i.e., standards of behavior, routines, procedures, group work, transitions, instructional
arrangement, etc.). Explain specific needs.
This is a collaborative assignment, students will be encouraged to discuss and share ideas as a
class. Students will
Independently complete the final worksheet.

Instructional Model/Strategy
1

(i.e., concept formation, concept development, direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry,
discussion model). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a specific
model of instruction. Be sure to include a rationale for the chosen model(s). You may use more
than one:

Students will be cooperatively learning and following the discussion model. After the
story has been read,
students need to have a clear comprehension of the story. As a class we will
collaborate
define our terms, I want students to use context clues from the story
three newtovocabulary
to define the terms rather than be explicitly given the definition. This way,
students will better be able to apply the terms to their own lives.

Daily Formative Assessment

How will you check for understanding and student achievement during the lesson?

During the class discussion, students will be informally assessed through participation to
check for their understanding of the three terms, reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students will
then be formally assessed on their final completion of the Reduce Reuse Recycle worksheet

Differentiating Instruction
How will you differentiate to meet the needs of your learners (i.e., what you teach, how you
teach, or how you will assess). Explain:
Students who are unable to write terms down on their worksheets will be allowed to verbally
be assessed, and have their words written for them on their worksheet. Students who are
gifted will be encouraged to extend this lesson by watching a video on consumption of nonmaterial things like water and electricity and make a list of things they can do at home to
reduce their usage.

Initiation
Cite how you will engage and motivate learners, activate prior learning and present the lessons
objective.
Explain: A) What they will be doing and learning in the lesson; B) How they will demonstrate
learning;
C) Why it is important to their everyday lives.
Students will gather around as a class to read the story The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
Students will be learning about the over production and use of earths resources,
pollution, and the importance of the resources that earth gives all living things. As a
class we will discuss the meanings of the words reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students
will be able to draw a connection to the story read, and the new science terms.

Lesson Development
Cite how you will provide opportunities for the students to construct meaning. List the
steps/process you will follow. Be sure to identify how you will check for understanding and
collect formative data. Differentiate for students who will require an accommodation or
modification in order to be active participants in this lesson and state these strategies in the
differentiation section above.

Class discussion and introduction to three vocabulary terms; reduce, reuse, and recycle
As a class we make a list of materials that are recyclable, and a list of natural resources
The teacher plays the screencast-o-matic which gives students instructions they can
follow along with on how to access the game and goes over key concepts during the
game tutorial mode
Students then use their individual chromebooks or IPads to play the interactive
recycling game
Students fill the worksheet in with different ways they can reduce, items they can
recycle, and things they can reuse.
Then students will color the arrow and earth images and attach to create final
displayable product
Closing discussion; as a class we collaborate to create a list of ways we can reduce,
reuse, and recycle our product consumption in our classroom and create a chart to
display and remind us always to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Closure
How will you question students in order to evaluate if the objective(s) was met? How will you
question students to connect this lesson to previous and subsequent lessons as well as connect to
their own lives? How will you question students to see the relevancy of the lesson by
understanding the purpose/importance of the learning?
After students finish their worksheets we will regroup as a class to discuss how we can
continue what we learned in class to our homes. As a class we will make a chart of ways we
can reduce, reuse, and recycle our classroom consumption of resources. we will use Thing Link
to create this classroom list, students will be provided with the web link to share with family.
Students for homework will be encouraged to have a discussion with parents.

Reflection on Practice
Student Achievement Evaluate student learning based on collected data for each SLO for each
group of learners. Identify how each group met the stated criteria in the SLO, including specific
data for each SLO. Based on your analysis what would you continue or change about your
teaching for the next lesson?

Common Core of Teaching Connection Choose an attribute from an indicator from Domains
1-4. Choose an attribute that was effective in your lesson. What specific evidence from the
lesson supports this?
