CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
A.

Background
Language is very important in human life. Language is means of

communications. Without a language, a person cannot communicate with others.


English is a language in the world. People call it a international language. English
is now becoming one of the most popular languages that is wished to be mastered.
It is wished by many people over the world coming from other countries,
especially people who are not using English as their colloquial language such as,
Indonesian, Japanese, Thailand, Korean and etc.
In a modern world with full of challenges and competition, everyone is
advised not only have a high level of education, but also required special skills
that we commonly call 'skill'. One of the 'skills' most needed today is English. In
accordance with the above explanation, English is the global language, then for
those who want a step ahead of people in general, need to have to master English.
However, as we all know that in the learning process we will find
difficulties such as studying grammar, less vocabulary, and lack of practices.
Thus, a simple way we can do is always practice and familiarize ourselves to use
the English language all the times, such as by talking with our friends, talking to
ourselves in the mirror or the better way is if we can talk directly with a native
speaker.
The most interesting way is if we could practice English with native
speakers directly because there we will be to check our English, we will know
how to pronounce words in a correct pronunciation. But the problem now is, find
a native speaker in the our districts, especially in Palangkaraya will be a little
more difficult. One of the ways that we can do to overcome this problem is visit
some regions that the native speakers are commonly there.

Bali, for example, is one of the most famous districts in Indonesia that the
native speakers usually go on vocation. By going there we may be able to practice
our English directly with the native speakers. Besides that, we will also be able to
enjoy our trip since at Bali is well-known of it has amazing views and places.
The writer wishes can share her experience towards mastering English. As
what She had done with her sixth semester friends, She was going to Bali in order
to have Study Excursion lecture conducted by her study program. The writer
was feeling great of her experience since she got many amazing experiences.
There, she practiced her English a lot by making conversation with the native
speakers and that experience showed her that practicing English by talking
directly to native speakers gave her many advantages to improving her English
speaking skill.
B. Purposes of the Study
This study is to expose and introduce the sixth semester students of
English education study program to the real world within the communities where
English is used for daily activities and give them the wide chances to experience
personally to communicate with both native and non-native speakers.

The first schedule, went suramadu bridge. Our purpose is to see the bridge

connecting Surabaya and Madura. After that, dinner at Probolingu.


The second schedule, we had breakfast, take a bath and shopping at
Kertalanggu. Then, we went to Tanjung Benoa, visited Turtle Island and
lunch at there. Then, we went to Pandawa Beach. Then, we went to
Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Culture Park. And the last place before we

went back to hotel, we went to Krisna for dinner and shopping.


The third schedule, We breakfast together at Hotel. Then, we went to
Indonesia Australia Language Foreign (IALF). Then, we went to Padangpadang Beach. Then, we went to Jimbaran Beach for dinner.

The fourth schedule, we went to Tanah lot and shopping at there. Then, we
went to R.M Saras for lunch. Then, we went to Bedugul Lake. And then,

we went to joger for shopping. And the last, we went to kertanggu for

dinner.
The last schedule, we went to show Barong dance. Then, we went to
Cening Ayu for dinner, shopping and looked production of Pie susu. Then,
we went to Tradional market (Sukawati) for shopping. Then, we had free
program. At 02.00 am we check out from Hotel and went to I Ngurah Rai
Airport.

C. Significances of the Study


This study is to enhance and strengthen the students English competence
in a wide environment and in real situation.

CONTENT
Prior to discussing what the writer has gotten from visiting Bali, she firstly
wishes to share her experiences about the Workshop she attended at the Third day
in Bali and the places she visited.
A. Motivating Your Learners
The third day at Bali, she and her friends went to IALF. There, she went to
learn about How motivating your learners especially in study English for science
and Technology. Here are some interest techniques and some topics discussed by
the lecture coming from:
1.) Before start the study, give student some games.
2.) Concept of ESP, meaning and characteristecs.
3.) Knowing the meaning of pace in class.
4.) Using English for science and technology spesific to Hotel.
5.) Make a conversation how to be Recetionist and costumers. Then, student fill
the blank in paper.
6.) Before Lesson ends, give student some games again.

B. The Places Visited

The writer was going to many beautiful places that exist in Bali. It was
really a great experience for her since she has never been to any beautiful places
before.
The trip was firstly begun at the Tjilik Riwut airport where at that moment
the plane was heading to Juanda airport, Surabaya. After arrived at Juanda airport,
the writer and her friends directly got on the bus (Bus 2) and went to Suramadu
bridge, Surabaya. There are we can show the bridge that connecting Surabaya and
Madura. Suramadu bridge is the longest bridge in Indonesia and also one of the
icon of Surabaya city which has length of 5.438 meters. The bridge is above the
Madura straits that purpose to improve the economy of Madura are relatively low
compared from Surabaya city.
The trip kept going on. The writer continued her trip to Ketapang harbor
which is located in Banyuwangi regency. In the early morning, she and her friends
got there and directly went to Gilimanuk harbor by ferry. As soon as arriving at
Gilimanuk harbor, the writer continued her trip to Kertalangu for breakfast, take a
bath and shopping.
The sun shone brightly in which it meant to be beginning the writers
second day in Bali. She and her friends were visiting to Tanjung Benoa beach
(Turtle Island). Then, the writer went to Pulau Penyu (Turtle Island) to seem many
animals especially turtle. Turtle Island is a breeding several species of sea turtles
are endangered because people make it as a typical Baliness culinary called
Lawar. There also have some animals snake, monkey, birds and so on. There are
lots of water spot games provided for the visitors such as Banana Boat, Jet Ski,
Sea Walker, Diving, Parasailing, Flying Fish, Speedboard, Dolphin tour,
Snorkeling and so on.
After she had fun at tanjung benoa beach, she and her friends continued
the trip to Pandawa beach. Pandawa beach was opened by the head of the local
village and opened at 2012. The name of this beach is derived from the name of
Pandawa figures in the history of puppet, which have the nature of good and wish.
Previously, this beach is often held Melasti caremony. It was day of Nyepi Hindu

caremony. There, we had also looked seaweed, swiming, sunbathe, playing


vollyball and so on.
Then, after she went to Pandawa beach. She and her friends went to
Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Culture park. There are statues of the Wisnu who
is riding Garuda. This sculpture will be the largest sculpture in the world. The
statue was created as a monument to temember the sacrifice of an eagle who
saved his mother from slavery which ultimately protected by the Wisnu. GWK
has several recreation areas like, Wisnu Plaza, street theater, lotus pond, Indraloka
garden, amphitheater, Tirta Agung. Then, she and her friends went to Khrisna.
Khrisna is a shop selling lots of stuffs of Bali. There, she went for shopping and
dinner.
Third day, she and her friends went to IALF to follow workshop. Then,
she and her friends went to Padang-padang beach. There she is very impressed
with the beauty of the sunset. Then, she and her friends walkes around to the
beach. She met some of native speakers. And she make a conversation with native
speaker and she take some photos with native speaker. There are not too many
activities. Visitors simply sunbathe while enjoying the sunset and walk around the
beach.
After having visited Padang-padang beach, the writer and his friends were
directly heading to Jimbaran in order to dinner. It was a very memorable dinner
for she since she was dining on the seashore that she had never done before. Later,
she and she friends went to hotel in order to take a rest.
Next day at Bali, the writer and her friends went to Tanah Lot. Tanah Lot
is the name of a temple surrounded by sea tides. But, she and her friends cannot
went to temple because when it was high tide sea water. And some of her friends
was visited and play with holy snack. Then, after touring she and her friends go
shopping to markets Tanah Lot. Next, she and her friends went to visited R.M
Saras to lunch. The place is very beautiful and there is so cold. She was lunch as
on the hill with a views of green trees.

After she had lunch at Saras Restaorant. She and her friends continue the
trip to Bedugul. Bedugul is derived from the Bedug and Kul-kul. In the past,
Muslim and Hindus in this area is very united, so that harmony is maintained in
this area. Then, she and her friends go around the lake and stopped at the villa
Bedugul. The place of Bedugul villa is very beautiful with views green trees and
amazing lake. But, we cannot stopped at Temple Ulun Danau Beratan because of
the rain.
The time passed by quickly, her tour guides were asking she and her
friends to continue their trip to other places. Joger was the fourth place where the
writer visited to. It is kind of shop that sells souvenirs from Bali. Its building is
really depicting the culture of Bali itself. After having, sightseeing and shopping
at Joger, she and her friends then went to Kertalanggu for dinner.
Last day, the trip was still continuing. The writer afterwards went to the
place of performance dance in order to get to know about Bali culture. There, she
and her friends were shown Barong dance that is one famous traditional dance
from Bali. She was so amazed of them since Bali is tremendously famous with its
culture. That was really becoming a great experience for the writer.
After shown barong dance, she and her friends went to Cening ayu for
lunch and shopping. It is also kind of shop that sells souvenirs from Bali. The
writer there was buying some stuff for her family in Kalimantan such as clothes,
traditional food of Bali, and so forth. Then, we went to traditional market that is
Sukawati. It is also of shop sells souvenirs, pictures, clothes, bags and so forth. At
Sukawati, she and her friends brought Rojak Bali. It is one food that famous at
Bali. After that, we back to Hotel and we had free program.
The first day in Bali was running quite perfect. The buses were directly
heading to the hotel. The hotel where she would be staying named Ratna. The
writer was feeling so exhausted then she directly took a rest at her room.
However, she was firstly having a warm shower to refresh his body since she had
not even had a shower all day.

The last place visited was Kuta beach. Kuta is the most famous beach in
bali where many visitors go on vocation. At Kuta, the writer was meeting with lots
of foreigners coming from different countries. In that occasion, the writer was
trying to evaluate her English by having small talk with the foreigners there.
B. Results of Interview with Foreigners
The writer was really taking advantages of visiting Bali. She tried to
practice her English a lot by having conversation with native speaker there. The
first foreigner whom she met at Padang- padang beach is named Maria. She is
from Swedia. She is a student and her experiences about padang beach are very
beautiful, interesting, have a good sunset but she tell to the writer if padang beach
little dirty, the people who live there is very poor and then she tell if she like
pepaya, because she can not find it in her country. The writer meant to have a little
bit conversation with her and fortunately she responded the writers invitation to
have a talk. She then asked a few questions to the writer about her personal
information. She asked the writer where she is from, and the writer answered that
she is not a Balinese but she is from Kalimantan. After the writer had given her
personal information to her, she asked the writer more about Kalimantan.
The second foreigner she met was Jimmy. He is from Swedan. His job is
IT Consuling. He tell to the writer if he like sunset of Kuta beach but he not like
the enviroment of Kuta beach because it is very dirty and then he tell Bali is very
hot. It was quite understandable since she pronounced a word clearly.
Then, the third one was Ketut lia. She is from Denpasar, a local people.
She is very kind and beautiful. Therefore, it was easy for the writer to ask a few
questions to her. The writer was also asking to her about her job. And her job is
selles then her experience is she like Denpasar because there have many foreigner
buy foods at her shop.
Those were all the experiences of the writer in practicing her English by
having conversation with some foreigners and local people. They were becoming
great experiences for the writer.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
A. Conclusion
Language is very important in human life. Language is means of
communications. One of the most popular language is English. English is now
becoming one of the most popular languages that is wished to be mastered. It is
wished by many people over the world coming from other countries, especially
people who are not using English as their colloquial such as, Indonesian. As we all
know, there are some difficulties that may make we lazy to learn English more,
such as less vocabulary and lack practiced it. Therefore, we need to look for
enjoyable way in practicing our English such as going to somewhere, where we
may be able to practice directly our English. Going to Bali, for example, may be
becoming one of interest ways to practicing our English. Besides we may be
practicing our English, we may also be able to enjoy the views of some places that
we had visited . By going there, indirectly, we will be meeting with the foreigners
that come there in order to go on vocation. We may also practice our English
whether or not it has been able to be applied.
B. Recommendation
In line with the conclusion above, the recommendations are as follow: The
writer wishes the young generation should be able to learn more about English
and will to be good master English and do not have assumption that English is
difficult to learn. The writer wishes that study program always conducted this
event.
