PENDULUM FRICTION

COEFFICIENT TESTING MACHINE

INSTRUCTION MANUAL

1. Illustration
With the development of traffic transportation, the construction of roads changes a lot. To
adapt the needs of the road construction and requirements of road examination
instruments , our factory produce this machine in order to measure the friction coefficient
for highway, urban roads and airport runway. This machine is easy for operating, with
accurate testing result and stability, can be used both for indoor and outside.

2. Working Principle
BM-II pendulum friction coefficient testing machine is dynamic pendulum type, it
measures the frictional resistance between a rubber slider mounted on the end of a
pendulum arm and the test surface, this provides highway and flooring engineers with a
routine method of checking the resistance of wet & dry surfaces to slipping and skidding;

3. Structure(fig. 1)
3.1 pedestal: include T-leg, leveling bubble, adjusting level;
3.2 vertical pillar: include pillar, lifting structure, guiding rod, handle;
3.3 release switch: to keep the horizontal level of pendulum and release it;
3.4 rotating system: include fasten handle, rotating axle, knuckle, bearing, etc.
3.5 reading system: include needle adjusting screw nut, scale, etc. its to read the testing
result;

4. main technical specification:


4.1 weight of pendulum : 1500 30 g;
orthocenter distance of pendulum: 410 5 mm
moment of force: 615000g.mm

3. distance between edge and center of pendulum: 510mm
4. the pendulum from tilted 5 degrees should swing not less than 70 times
5. machine weight : about 14 kg

5. Using method
1 select the testing point: on the testing road, along with the direction of left wheel that car
moving, select 5 points and each point distance should be around 5~10m
2. leveling:
2.1 place the machine at the testing point, make the pendulum swing direction same as
car moving direction;
2.2. rotating the adjusting bolt to make the leveling bubble in the middle ;
3. Zero
3.1 calibrate the needle: make the pendulum at vertical downward direction, adjust the
needle to make it right at the center of pendulum; If its not at the center place, use the
adjusting screw nut to make the needle go to center place of pendulum, then fasten the
nut to fix the needle place;
3.2 loosen the fasten handle, rotate the lifting handle and make the pendulum rise which
at a free swing position, then fix the handle;
3.3 make the pendulum swing to the right, insert the catch ring into the slot of release
switch, now the pendulum should be at horizontal level. Meanwhile, use left hand to make
needle close to the screw which should be at vertical direction;
3.4 Press the release switch and pendulum will swing to the left direction, the needle will
go upward. After the pendulum reach the max. height and falling down, catch the
pendulum rod with left hand, now the needle should be at zero place; If needle not at the
zero place, then adjust the screw to make it go to zero position;
4. calibrate the sliding length
4.1 Use rubber brushes to clean the testing surface on the road, remove particles or other
dirty;
4.2 Make the pendulum at free suspension position,
4.3 Release the fasten handle, rotate the lifting handle and let the pendulum falling down
slowly and meanwhile lift up the hang handle with right hand to make the pendulum move
to the right, put slider at the right side of ruler and make it touch the road surface and align
with ruler scale; Then lift up the hand handle and make the pendulum move to the left, put
slider at the left side of ruler and touch the testing road surface and align with ruler scale;
Now fix the fasten handle, check the sliding length. During this process, can adjust the
leveling screw to adjust the sliding length and make length to 1260.5mm, but please
make sure that during adjusting procedure the leveling bubble should be in the middle;
5. Testing
Use water to wet the road surface and use rubber brush to brush and clean up the surface,
wash away the mud, then use watering the road surface again; Press the release switch
and make the pendulum to sliding on the surface, the needle will show the testing
value(normally the first test will be not be recorded). When pendulum swing back to the
right direction, use left hand to hold the pendulum rod, use right hand to lift up the hang
handle and make the slider rise, move the pendulum to right, insert catch ring into the slot

of switch, repeat the step 1~5 and test 5 times(every test remember to watering the rod
surface), and record the testing result; The five testing results different should not larger
than three units, if value different more than three units, then need check the reason and
repeat the procedure till it meets the requirement;
6. Testing Result
6.1 For every testing point, need to test 5 times and use the average value as the final
value; Then use the average value of 5 points as the road surface testing result;
6.2 the readings on the scale you get need to be divided by 100, then will come the
coefficient value; For example the pendulum value is 33, then the friction coefficient is
0.33;
7. Note
7.1 Because the coefficient maybe influenced by the weather and temperature, when
doing test need to record the date and wet surface temperature;
7.2 For the testing road surface should describe its structure type, appearance and using
limit;
7.3 When the pendulum swing to the left and return back, remember to catch the
pendulum rod to avoid any damage on the slider and needle;
7.4 The testing rod surface that rubber sheet will touch should not have obvious dent or
hump, which maybe influence the testing result;
7.5 When calibrating the sliding length, should according the point that rubber sheet first
touch the surface, cannot use the swing strength which may make it move forward, which
may cause the calibrated length not accurate;
7.6 The friction coefficient of the road is different due to the road cross section, normally
the value is smaller for the middle of road while bigger at the side; To reflect the worst
situation of the road, should select the place that frequently use brake with small friction,
thus normally select the left wheel place along the driving direction;
7.7 When use a new rubber sheet on slider, should use the new one on dry surface for 10
times, then use on wet surface for 20times, after then can use the rubber sheet for test;
The rubber sheet abrasion should not more than 3.2mm(longer edge) & 1.6mm(shorter
edge), other should change a new one(see fig. 2). In addition, if the rubber sheet is
polluted by the oil then cannot be used for test too. The useful life of rubber sheet is 1year,
despite its used or still new after 1 year, it cannot be used for test, because rubber
performance such as harness, elasticity, aging is changed as time past and this will
influence the testing result;
7.8 The set screw on the pendulum head cannot be rotated after calibrated without
authorization, otherwise will affect the testing result;

6. Maintenance
6.1 This machine belongs to precision instrument, must pay attention to take care of each
parts and ensure the testing accuracy; If not familiar to machine structure, please read the
instruction manual first; Do not disassemble the machine except those can be removable;
6.2 After testing, clean all the parts and put into the case, machine should be kept in a

clean room away from acid or any corrosion material, with good ventilation;
6.3 The machine should be moved or transported in the case to avoid any damage,
except need to move during test or other special case;

7. BM-II machine calibration:


The machine should be calibrated annually, if machine been damaged or change, need to
calibrated in time;
