ABSTRACT The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has created The Red List
Project, helping researches on endangered species of fauna and flora living in some kind of extinction
threat on the whole world. These researches follow accurate procedures to result in adjusted evaluations
of the conservations status on each species, which are published periodically into Red Books, designed to
help on the creation of new national or international projects of species conservation. However, these
books are only available in printed versions or in static electronic documents, conditions which restrict
the access and manipulation of this data, and at the same time limiting the communication and
collaboration among researchers. This project presents a web based geographic information system
capable to gather and present information about the Brazilian fauna which has some kind of extinction
threat. These records can also be registered with other species data like taxonomic information, threat
level, multimedia resources and a set of the geographic informations, resulting in a geographic database
which can lead to better result showed into web maps. It is expected that this project will contribute to
facilitate the collaborative work among researchers and help them to develop new projects on ecological
preservation.
