Installing and creating 11gR2 Oracle Grid (Non-RAC/not a RAC) Infrastructure Standalone
Server, and ASM Disks on Windows Server 2008R2 using Oracle Virtual Box
Grid and Oracle home is owned by Oracle so, there is only one account used to manage both
homes that is using an Oracle User account but not a Windows Administrator account

The screenshots are less and are specific to the point where the changes have to be
done
Software
Oracle Virtual Box, Oracle 11gR2 Database and Grid Software for Windows x64 and Windows
Server 2008 R2 64 bit
Oracle Software Part 1&2&3 for Windows x64 should be downloaded

Hardware (Disks) Configuration

On a Separate Drive Oracle home and Grid home are installed (putting them on a C drive is
possible but, that is not called a good installation). So, this disk will have NTFS files system
Three disks for ASM are used. Two of them are used for storing Data, which is named as
DATA and the third disk is for other files, which is named as RECO (Archive logs etc)

Assumptions
Windows OS 2008 R2 is installed and configured already
Oracle User is created if not you can see 'links' section to create an Oracle User on Windows
Deactivated

Firewall deactivated , IE ESC Security to "off" and TCP/IPv6 deactivated (a Static IPv4 is used
If you want to do with IPv6 it is fine. Your choice)
Firewall : (Switch off the Firewall because this is test system. During the install it is better to
do. Later on, you can turn it ON)
IE ESC Security : Open "Server Manager" and click on "configure IE ESC" and then activate
"off" for Administrators and for Users also if you want because this is test system
IPv6 : Right click on "Network" icon -> "View Status " -> Properties -> select (TCP/IPv4) ->
and click on properties

Software Programs
It is always good to install .NET 3.5 on Windows. You can additionally install .NET 4 Client
Profile, download that first and install it, which helps to install PowerShell V3 later on

Hosts File
You can open the hosts file in this way directly if you want to save the Computer Name here
(it is not going to throw error if the computer name is not saved here)

Disks Configuration
Oracle and Grid Home Disk

Oracle and Grid Home is "New Virtual Disk 1" and it is renamed as "Oracle_Disk" which
requires NTFS File System

Using Disk Management you can do that

ASM Disks Configuration

On the below screen you can see how you can create ASM Disks which needs to be "Fixed
Size"

You repeat the steps for 3 times to create 3 ASM Disks with a size of 5 GB each

ASMTOOL For Windows

Oracle ships us this ASMTOOL for Windows in Grid Software
Right click on it and select "run as administrator" to mark the disks as ASM Disks (not a must )

In my case I selected only 2 disks and labelled them as "DATA"

Grid Installation

Run the Grid Setup from the "Grid" Directory

The recommended size of AU is 4 MB by Oracle for good performance. If you do not

change it that remains with the default 1 MB size (For example, in case DWH Database it is
set to higher number, for example 16 MB of AU size)

You just change the C to other drive where you want to install (in my case it is E so, I just
changed the C to E for Oracle Base and Software Location too)

Important Point Of Installation

Below screens show the demerits of putting on C, which is a Windows System Drive
1)

2)

3)The final screen shows this when you put everything on C drive

So, once you do the changes you reach the Summary screen, then click "install" to get it
installed
The final "success" screen shows with :

Database Installation On ASM Disks

Open the Database Directory and run "setup"

Click on "Options" to activate that is required for you, in my case I activated the below

If you want to put everything on C drive then the software location for Database should be
checked
Note: The Oracle_Base is same for Grid and Oracle Home but, only Software locations for them are
on different directories and should be separated

If E was set for "Oracle Base and Software Location" then it looks like so

Because this is test system you can deselect Security settings

Once you are present with Summary and happy then click on "install"
You will get the EM Database Control Link

Setting Environment Variables

Right click on "Computer" icon -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> finally click on
"Environment Variables"
For example if you put on C then it is

To keep that simple you can assign another variable as GH so that you can save time in typing

Verify

Verify using CRSCTL and SRVCTL

Verify Services
Open Task Manager -> click on "Services" Tab and again on "services" button found on the
right edge -> now just press "o" key that shows up all the services with the "o"
Tip: Here you can set up them all to start "manual" if you want (for example you might install other
software and you do not want to waste your Computer's Memory )

Links
The Oracle Master has already shown this on this link. The only difference is that it is about RAC (but,
of course it is about Grid Infrastructure)

Watch out for the section "Creating Oracle User " to create that on Windows
