HYDEL ENERGY
THEORY
Hydel Energy
Hydro energy is simply energy that is taken from water and converted to electricity. Hydro energy can
be obtained by using many methods of capture. The most common method of using energy from water
is a hydroelectric dam, where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the
energy is captured to run a generator. Hydro power is the process of changing the kinetic energy of
flowing water in a river into electrical power that we can use.
One limitation is that a dam is required in such projects where the building of dams can be a costlier
affair. Also the dam will change the habitat and landscape upstream, as much more land will be
submersed. The land below the dam is also affected as the flow of water is reduced. Water supply is
sometimes blocked so the area post the dam does not get adequate supply of water as water flow is
controlled by humans.
Hydropower generation
Hydropower plants harness water's energy and use simple mechanics to convert that energy into
electricity. Hydropower plants are actually based on a rather simple concept -- water flowing through a
dam turns a turbine, which turns a generator.

Pelton wheels are ideal for low power installations with outputs of 10kW or less but they have
also been used in installations with power outputs of up to 200 MW. Pelton Turbines are
partially submerged in water.
2. Francis Turbine
Capable of delivering over 500 MW of power. This type of turbine is fully submerged in water.
