Volunteer
 Administering English and Science classes at the high school level. Introduced the
concept of the five paragraph essay, how to cite references, complete book reports, and
participate in formal public speaking and in class discussions. Initiated pen pal program with
students in the U.S. and stocked a classical (English) literature section in the library. (18-25
students per class; 5 classes)
 Working with a health care center in Tamarindo, a rural village two hours outside
Guayaquil. Documenting events, fundraising, and email/web page assistance. (70 beneficiaries)

Jan 2009-March 2009 Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS Phoenix, AZ


Volunteer
 Databasing churches in the state of Arizona so the Center can begin a faith-based
outreach program in the coming months.
 Designing new brochures outlining the national and international “face” of HIV/AIDS to
be distributed at various high schools in the Maricopa County.

Volunteer
 Taught Chemistry, Biology, and Business Studies at a secondary school in an
impoverished area. Implemented new ideas in the school including appropriate hand washing
measures before eating and lab experiments, a suggestion box for the students, and the ASK
Program, which was an open forum to discuss issues surrounding sex, HIV/AIDS, gender, and
drug abuse. (33 students in classes; 110 students ASK program)
 Volunteered with MUYOG, a youth group based in the Marurui slum district.
Participated in the group’s projects, which consisted of a garbage pick-up, educational program at
a primary school on HIV/AIDS, self-empowerment, and other issues affecting pre-teens. (~40
active members)

 Aiding in refugee resettlement. Provide added assistance to families of African refugees
