EXERCISE 1

1. Explain counselling from the Islamic perspective


There is no tradition or profession of counselling in Islam as it is in the
west. A good Muslim does not need counselling. We just need to follow Al
Quran and Al Sunnah. For a Muslim an absolute guidance is the absolute
guidance from Allah the almighty. Allah has given the Muslims with the
greatest role model of his prophets from Adam to prophet of Muhammad
s.a.w. They are the greatest counsellors in deed. All the prophets received
the guidance (revelation)

from Allah which then was delivered to

human being.
Islamic counselling emphasizes spiritual solutions, based on love

and

fear of Allah and the duty to fulfil our responsibility as the servant of Allah
on this earth. The principles of Islamic counselling are the following
confidentiality,

trust,

respect,

recognizing

the

difference

between

arbitration and counselling, loving what is good in other people, making


peace between people, concern about Muslim affairs, good listening
habits, understanding others culture, the partnership between Imam and
professionals, awareness of the law of the land, and the ultimate goal of
connecting people with Allah and offering spiritual solutions to them.

2. State the differences between counselling and guidance


Counseling:

is the means by which one person helps another through purposeful

conversation.
Counseling also is a method of identifying practical solution to an
identified problem.

Guidance:

is the process of helping people make important choices that affect


their lives such as choosing a preferred lifestyle.

guidance focus on helping individuals choosing what they value


most

3. Explain the characteristic of effective counselors


An effective counselor should has the Empathy towards his or her clients
which is the ability to stand empathetically with clients for example: see
the world as they see it. Then, a counselor also must be warmth to his or
her clients which is delicate one or be freindly with clients. Other than
that, a counselor that has the genuineness also will be effective to the
clients. Furthermore, a counselor must show their professional manner
during the counseling session so that the counseling given is effective and
succesful toward client. In addition, a counselor must give the positive
regard towards their clients which is always give a good support to the
clients. Lastly, an effective counselor must has the concreteness to their
clients which is get to listen, listen empathically, clarifies the clients
thoughts and leads the clients to a logical conclusion so that the
counselling given will be working to the clients.
4. List the development of counselling process
i) Building a relationship

The stage to develop a strong basis to create a cooperative sharing.

ii) Starting an exploration

The stage to understand how clients perceive their problems or to


understand their frame of reference.

iii) Making a decision

The stage to develop an aim for the client which means the direction
that the counsellor plans to guide the client. At this stage, the
counsellor tries to think of the strategies to help his clients.

iv) Taking action

The stage where a counsellor attempts to reduce the level of


anxiety or solve her problems.

v) Ending a session

The stage where the counsellor sums up what has been going in the
counselling session and its effects.

EXERCISE 2
1. List the three purposes of paraphrasing the client's statement
i) Tell the client that the counsellor is trying to understand him.
ii) Summarise more clearly what has been said by the client.
iii) Check whether what is understood by the client is similar to what the
client wants to convey.
2. Explain the principles of nonverbal communication
i) All Behaviours has Communicative Value

We especially pay attention to nonverbal when they contradict


verbal communication.

ii) Nonverbal Communication is Primarily Relational

Dimensions of relational level of nonverbal communication it


represent responsiveness, liking and power

iii) Nonverbal Communication is Ambiguous

The same nonverbal can have multiple meanings. For example, Im


feeling content smiles.

iv) Nonverbal Communication Reflects Cultural Values

Another reason nonverbal are ambiguous is that different cultures


have different rules about nonverbal. For examples space, touch and
eye-contact.

3. Explain good and bad questions


i) Good questions
1. Avoided why. Why?

It sound judgemental (think of when you got into trouble as a kid)


Client dont know why (think of you had to give a reason why you

got into trouble)


Why question can be restated sounds less accusatory and elicits
the same information. Instead of why did you do that? you may
consider can tell me how you made that decision? how did that
word for you?

2. Open and closed


Open question:

Help elaborate and enrich the clients story


Help bring out the concentrate specific of the client word.

Closed gives basically a yes or no response.


3. Fluff

If you are trying to fill space, it probably not a useful question

If you can reflect or use another skill. It always better

ii) Bad questions

It becomes a boring investigation or interrogation process.


The consultation process shifts from focusing on feelings to

cognitive.
The flow of discussion becomes uncontrollable

4. Explain difficult and uncommitted client


Difficult clients are the unmotivated clients who refuse to seek help from
anyone. If left unattended, these individuals will not ask for or talk to a
counsellor. This group of clients does not believe that counseling is a
logical and realistic approach. Uncommitted clients will not cooperate in
the process of counseling due to several reasons. A being quiet difficult
client may end up, not answering the questions or showing indifference to
a discussion. When he tries to cooperate, it may be as far as nodding or
talking indifferently.

5. Give Recommendation for counsellors to overcome difficult


clients
i) Accept the fact about the level of achievement in the counseling
ii) Put realistic expectation
iii) Understanding clients refusal

iv) The counselor responses need to be right
