Hunters And Other Outdoor Enthusiasts:

Time To Wear Blaze Orange_____________

"Wearing blaze orange has definitely been shown to decrease

hunting incidents across the country," said Josh Mackay, who
coordinates the Hunter Education Program at the New Hampshire
Fish and Game Department. "It's important for outdoors enthusiasts generally, but especially for hunters, because the overwhelming majority of hunting-related incidents involve members of
hunting parties."

Mackay stressed that, along with wearing blaze orange, the top
safety rules for hunters are controlling the muzzle of your gun at
all times and positively identifying your target -- and what's
beyond -- 100 percent of the time.
NHFG Blaze Orange CapOverall, New Hampshire has an excellent record for hunter safety, largely attributable to the state's
effective hunter education programs. The average number of
hunting-related incidents per year has gone down each decade

OBITUARY

North Haverhill, NH Dorothy Augusta Dot

Horne, 92, went to the arms of the Lord peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2015, at the Grafton
County Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born in Haverhill, NH, July 8, 1923, the

daughter of Leon and Pearl (Hutchins) LaFrance.
Dot graduated from Woodsville High School, class of 1941. She
married the love of her life, Leslie Horne, and raised six children.
She always had a smile for everyone she met and was determined
to help everyone. Dot was hard working all her life as a caregiver,
campground hostess, and a friendly store clerk until she turned
88.

Her beloved husband of 50 years, Leslie passed on December 1,

1989, somehow she pressed on. Her loving and caring spirit and
warming smile will be sadly missed. She was also predeceased by
a son, John L. Horne; two daughters, Betty J. Horne and Nancy P.
Reed; four sisters, Shirley Smith, Susan Mickey George, Carol
Brill, and Betty Sulham; and by two brothers, Robert and Alfred
LaFrance.
She is survived by a daughter, Nellie L. Horne of White River,
VT; two sons, Leslie G. Horne Jr. and wife Susan of Austin,
Texas and James E. Horne of North Haverhill; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There were no calling hours. A graveside service was held on

Sunday, September 13th at the Center Haverhill Cemetery, with
Pastor Wayne Chevalier of the Benton Bible Chapel officiating.

The Adventures
of Tom & Atticus

It all started out innocently

enough by taking him to the
woods and the beach in
Newburyport when we lived
there, and he was learning about
life in his first year or two. When
a brother invited us to join him
and two of our other brothers on
a hike up Mount Garfield, Atticus
and I became more serious in our
walking. I didnt want to hold
back my siblings on the ten-mile
hike. As for Atticus? Well, I wasnt sure if he could do it, but we
gave it a try. He was two and a
half years old, and my diminutive
friend proved to be better suited
to hiking than the rest of us.

Hes always had this right, and

hes invoked it on occasion
through the years. But now its
different. I know the days of
intense hiking are over for him,
and, therefore, me, too, since it
was what we shared. We do pretty much everything together and
always have.

Still though, the breeze through

the trees, the bubbling brook, the
smell of the earth where the forest roots herself, all of these
things call to us and we cannot
stay out of the woods. Nature is
our religion. It is as important to
him as it is me.

Instead of sitting on peaks above

treeline and gazing off into the
distance for half an hour without
moving anything but his head or
eyes, he sits by rivers, streams,
and lakes and does the same
thing. He still appreciates every
bit of it, and Im thankful for that.

I often bring my backpack with

us, even on simple walks in the
woods, because Ive learned he
wants and needs water more than
he used to. And sometimes, when
the air is fresh and clean, and
there is a twinkle in his old eye,
well come to a trail junction and
hell want to go up again, and
we do. It rarely happens, but it
fulfills me and makes me grateful

at 8:15 am at Crossroads
Academy, eighth grade students
will present the results of three
years of research inspired by
the challenge of saving three
species of ladys slipper orchids
from extinction. Crossroads
students cultivated seedlings of
the rare showy ladys slipper in
our school's tissue culture laboratory. They are now distributing young plants to master gardeners and working with local
organizations to develop ladys
slipper sanctuaries throughout
the Upper Valley in order to
help prevent their regional
extinction. The students will be
presenting this research at the
American Association for the
Advancement of Science
(AAAS) in Washington, DC. In
recognition of their extraordi-

program. Upon graduation,

Crossroads students attend the
finest public and private high
schools in New England.

A Hop Away

At night, now, we listen for a

moment before stepping into
the darkness. Were not gazing
at the stars, getting a bearing on
our own minute place amongst
the vast heavens. Nor are Ryan
and I checking for signs of the
bear or the porcupine whove
meandered by our stoop this
summer. Instead, were hoping
to hear signs of a regular guest:
the Front Door Toad.

A rustle in the tall grass, the

subtle stick of amphibian feet
leaping on granite, a ripple in
the puddle atop the garden cornerstone - these are the clues
that he (or she) has arrived for
the night. More often than not,
there is a distinct jump at the
door as we step out, as if he was
just too curious not to take a

peek at what lay inside.

Shades of brown, grey, and

cream, our front door toad is
camouflaged well to our stone
stoop
and
log
walls.
Sometimes at dusk well catch
sight of him, and say a few kind
words in greeting. After nightfall, we lose our visual advantage; his ability to surprise is

noteworthy.
evening our startled meetings
replayed themselves as the toad
leapt over our feet, aimed for
the doorstep, or narrowly scooted out of the way of our unsuspecting footfall. We began
using our headlamps, scanning
the stoop before walking out.

We began to like the little guy

and count on him being there
each night. He was our talisman of summer, and our regular

evening visitor. We relished his

verve and vigor, and appreciated his steady company. We
imagined him at ease with the
mutual habits we three now
shared.

Then, he was gone. One night,

two night, three, four - the presence of his absence was so
noticeably!.
Ryan and I
laughed, while our eyes smiled
to think of how easily this small
creature had molded our
evening patterns, chuckling to
share how much wed grown
accustomed to sharing the stoop
with this batrachoid companion. We stopped carrying a
light outside, and wished him
well wherever he had headed.
Until

... one of us opened the door

and heard that familiar rustle in
the weeds. Hes back! We
were laughing again, happy to
share the stoop once more. So
for now, the front door toad has
returned for these last warm
weeks of summer. We take a
few extra moments to watch
and see and listen, and enjoy
the simple communion - perhaps all in our imagination - in
the meeting of our beings.

Dear Friends, Seasons come and go

in our lives just as the seasons of
weather do.There is a purpose for every
season under heaven. And so do the seasons
of our lives. Ecc.3:1-11. So there will be
seasons when we laugh, dance, keep, love
others.. And there will be a season when we
will cry, mourn, weep.. You may be in a happy
season or a sad season. The good news is
seasons change, you change, people change.
But what you need to know is God never
changes, Heb. 13:8! So take heart. God is in
control. He can take a bad season and turn it
into a good season. He will never leave or
forsake you. Ask Him for help and thank Him
for it all. Be encouraged! God bless

The Outside Story - by Todd McLeish______________________________________________________________

No Easy Recovery for Bats

In 2006, I joined a team of biologists to trap bats in Vermonts

Chittenden County. We were
searching for North Americas
rarest bat, the Indiana bat, which
had recently been discovered
breeding in a forest in
Middlebury. The biologists
hoped to identify additional populations of this endangered
species and develop a better
sense of how they were faring.

tiate an Indiana bat from the

then-abundant little brown bat
by the length of the hair on its
toes. But by the time the book
was published, delineating the
breeding range of the Indiana bat
in Vermont was no longer the priority it once was. Thats because
hibernating bats in the Northeast
I wrote about my bat trapping were being found dead and dying
experience in my 2007 book by the thousands and no one
Golden Wings and Hairy Toes. knew why.
The hairy toes part of the title references the best way to differen- The mystery disease was first
discovered in a cave in New York
in the winter of 2006-07. Masses
of dead bats were soon found in
hibernacula in Vermont and New
Hampshire as well, and within
seven years the disease spread to
26 states and five Canadian
provinces. About a half million
bats are believed to have died in
Vermont alone from what
became known as white nose
syndrome, and nearly six million
have perished nationwide.

So we set up a series of mist nets

fine nets on poles up to 30 feet
tall placed along forest trails and
at the edge of fields and we
watched the nets for two consecutive nights. We trapped dozens
of bats of five species, but found
no Indianas.

Named for the white fungus that

appears on a bats nose, ears, and
wings during hibernation, the
disease causes bats to awaken in
the middle of winter, forcing

them to increase their metabolic

rate and expend energy at a time
when no flying insects are available to eat. Almost all infected
bats perish, and in many hibernacula more than 90 percent of
the animals become infected.

According to Alyssa Bennett,

biologist for the Vermont
Department of Fish and Wildlife,
no one knows how many bats
wintered in the 30 known hibernacula in the state before the disease spread throughout the
region. Nor is it known how
many other caves, mines or other
underground sites may host
hibernating bats in Vermont. But
all six species of bats that spend
the winter in northern New
England have been affected.
Little brown bats, the most abundant species in the region prior to
the outbreak and the species most
likely to be found breeding in
attics and barns during the summer, have declined by about 90
percent in the Northeast. Tri-colored bats and Indiana bats have
also suffered significant declines,
though they were never very
common in New Hampshire or
Vermont to begin with.

NORTHCOUNTRYNEWS| ncnews@gmail.com September 25, 2015 Page B-16

The hardest hit of the regions

bats is the northern long-eared
bat, which has declined by about
98 percent since the disease outbreak. Bennett is worried that it
may be the one species that never
recovers. While the rate of
decline has slowed for all other
species, long-eared bats are still
dying at a high rate. At Vermonts
largest hibernacula, Aeolus Cave,
northern long-eared bats represent less than one percent of the
caves current bat population of
about 30,000 animals (down
from about 350,000 in the
1960s), but they represent about
half of all the bats found dead
there since 2012.

Big brown bats and eastern

small-footed bats have also been
affected by the disease, though
their declines have been much
less dramatic, perhaps because
they hibernate in cooler, drier
sites that are not conducive to the
moisture-loving fungus. Big
browns, which commonly breed
in attics and barns, are likely to
recover most quickly, because
they produce more young than
the other species, and the decline
of the little brown bat will mean
more places for big browns to
reproduce. The regions other
three bat species the hoary, silver-haired and eastern red
faced no ill-effects from the disease because they migrate south
for the winter and do not hibernate.

To fight the continuing effects of

the disease, scientists are studying possible treatments for white
nose syndrome. One effort
involves the creation of a bacterial spray developed from a bacterium found naturally on the
skin of big brown bats that may
suppress the fungus and help
them survive the winter.

Sadly, the disease has already left

a lasting mark in the Northeast.
Little brown, northern longeared, and tri-colored bats have
been added to the Vermont and
New Hampshire endangered
species lists, and state biologists
are doing what they can to protect habitat and study the animals. Now its up to the remaining bats to undertake the long
process of rebuilding their populations. With most species producing just one pup each year, it
may take a century or more to
reach pre-disease levels.

Tek Talk...

With Eli Heath

Of Paige Computer Services

Tech Tips, Talk & Advice For Your Computer

Todays technology makes it possible for anyone to find out personal information about you.
Applying for a job, credit or to go
to collage people try to find
information about you most of
that research is using the internet.
If you are curious about what is
on the internet about you just go
to a search engine such as Google
and type in your name to see
what you can find. Keep in mind
if you use Face Book, Yahoo or
any social networking site what
you post is available for the
world to see. Not just the Internet
but also Text messaging on your
cell phone, it can be researched
and available for anyone to get
years from the time you sent the
information, you cannot hide
your personal information in a
shoebox in a dark closet on the
internet, someone will find it and
use what they find against you.
So how do we protect ourselves
from ourselves, well here are
some tips from Electronic
Frontier
Foundation
at
http://www.eff.org/wp/effs-top12-ways-protect-your-online-privacy;

1)
Do not reveal personal
information inadvertently.
You may be "shedding" personal
details, including e-mail addresses and other contact information,
without even knowing it unless
you properly configure your Web
browser. In your browser's
"Setup",
"Options"
or
"Preferences" menus, you may
wish to use a pseudonym instead
of your real name, and not enter
an e-mail address, nor provide
other personally identifiable
information that you don't wish
to share. When visiting a site you
trust you can choose to give them
your info, in forms on their site;
there is no need for your browser

to potentially make this information available to all comers. Also

be on the lookout for systemwide "Internet defaults" programs on your computer (some
examples include Window's
Internet Control Panel, and
MacOS's
Configuration
Manager, and the third-party Mac
utility named Internet Config).
While they are useful for various
things, like keeping multiple Web
browers and other Internet tools
consistent in how the treat downloaded files and such, they
should probably also be
anonymized just like your browser itself, if they contain any fields
for
personal
information.
Households with children may
have an additional "security
problem" - have you set clear
rules for your kids, so that they
know not to reveal personal
information unless you OK it on
a site-by-site basis?
2) Don't reveal personal details to
strangers or just-met "friends".

The speed of Internet communication is often mirrored in rapid

online acquaintanceships and
friendships. But it is important to
realize that you don't really know
who these people are or what
they are like in real life. A thousand miles away, you don't have
friends-of-friends or other references about this person. Be also
wary of face-to-face meetings. If
you and your new e-friend wish
to meet in person, do it in a public place. Bringing a friend along
can also be a good idea. One
needn't be paranoid, but one
should not be an easy mark,
either. Some personal information you might wish to withhold
until you know someone much
better would include your full

name, place of employment,

phone number, and street address
(among more obvious things like
credit card numbers, etc.)
Needless to say, such information
should not be put on personal
home pages. (If you have a work
home page, it may well have
work contact information on it,
but you needn't reveal this page
to everyone you meet in a chat
room.) For this and other reasons,
many people maintain two personal home pages, a work-related
one, and an "off duty" version. In
the commercial sector, too,
beware "fast-met friends". A
common "social engineering"
form of industrial espionage is to
befriend someone online just
long enough to get them to reveal
insider information
3) Realize you may be monitored
at work, avoid sending highly
personal e-mail to mailing lists,
and keep sensitive files on your
home computer.

In most US states and many if not

most countries, employees have
little if any privacy protection
from monitoring by employers.
When discussing sensitive matters in e-mail or other online
media, be certain with whom you
are communicating. If you
replied to a mailing list post,
check the headers - is your reply
going to the person you think it
is, or to the whole list? Also be
aware that an increasing number
of employers are monitoring and
recording employee Web usage,
as well as e-mail. This could
compromise home banking passwords and other sensitive information. Keep private data and
private Net usage private, at
home. See this CNN/IDG article
on "snoopware" (which may not
be limited to your office...):
http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH
/ptech/11/07/snoopware.idg/
4) Beware sites that offer some
sort of reward or prize in
exchange for your contact information or other personal details.
There's a very high probability

that they are gathering this information for direct marketing purposes. In many cases your name
and address are worth much more
to them because they can sell it to
other marketers (who can do the
same in turn...) than what you are
(supposedly) getting from them.
Be especially wary of sweepstakes and contests. You probably won't win, but the marketer
sure will if you give them your
information
5) Do not reply to spammers, for
any reason.

"Spam", or unsolicited bulk email, is something you are probably already familiar with (and
tired of). If you get a spammed
advertisment, certainly don't take
the sender up on whatever offer
they are making, but also don't
bother replying with "REMOVE"
in the subject line, or whatever
(probably bogus) unsubscribe
instructions you've been given).
This simply confirms that your
address is being read by a real
person, and you'll find yourself
on dozens more spammers' lists
in no time. If you open the message, watch your outgoing mail
queue to make sure that a "return
receipt" message was not generated to be sent back to the spammer automatically. (It is best to
queue your mail and send manually, rather than send immediately, so that you can see what's
about to go out before it's actually sent. You should also turn off
your mailer's automatic honoring
of return receipt requests, if any.)
If you have a good Internet service provider, you may be able to
forward copies of spam e-mail to
the system administrators who
can route a complaint to the ISP
of the spammer (or if you know a
lot about mail headers and DNS
tools, you can probably contact
these ISPs yourself to complain
about the spammer.) If you are
getting spammed a lot, there are a
variety of filters and anti-spam
services available, including:

(works well with TAG);

BrightMail ( http://www.brightmail.com/ ) for ISPs;
SpamCop ( http://spamcop.net/ )
for anyone; )..
6) Remember that YOU decide
what information about yourself
to reveal, when, why, and to
whom.
Don't give out personally-identifiable information too easily. Just
as you might think twice about
giving some clerk at the mall
your home address and phone
number, keep in mind that simply
because a site asks for or
demands personal information
from you does not mean you
have to give it. You do have to
give accurate billing information
if you are buying something, of
course, but if you are registering
with a free site that is a little too
nosy for you, there is no law (in
most places) against providing
them with pseudonymous information. (However, it would probably be polite to use obviously
fake addresses, such as "123 No
Such Street, Nowhere, DC
01010". If they are generating
mailings based on this information - presumably in accordance
with the terms of their privacy
policy - they can probably weed
such addresses out and not waste
the postage on them. Definitely
do NOT use someone else's real
address!) However, if you are
required to agree to terms of
service before using the free
service, be sure those terms do
not include a requirement that
you provide correct information,
unless the penalty is simply not
being allowed to use the service
any more, and you're willing to
pay that price if they figure out
you are not providing them with
your actual personally-identifiable information.

If someone is using your personal information in a way that can

jeopardize your reputation there
is a website that will help individuals to erase any information
about them on the internet and
defend you against what may be
