barn at 105 McKie Hollow Road, Cambridge, New York. For directions see

at this new concert venue in the woods at Beloved Farm. After a brief musical improvisation celebrating the sounds of autumn and the new barn, the program includes: Kaija Saariahos Sept
Papillons for cello: seven miniatures, each of which studies a different aspect of fragile and ephemeral movement. Beethovens glorious string quartet No. 8, Opus 59 #2. Schoenbergs atmospheric string sextet Transfigured Night, Opus 4. From the peak of the composers early romantic
period, this piece is based on Dehmels poem about lovers walking in a moonlit wood: her child will
be transfigured by their union. Performers are the soulful young Julius String Quartet; Music from

HARRY ORLYKS WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED AT MCCARTEES BARN in Salem, New

York from through October 31st. The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by Evera Sue Clary,
provides an in-depth look at the artists work from 1985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of
landscape painting, Orlyks paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes of Washington County.
They have echoes of the Hudson River School, but filtered through the use of color and composition of the Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. The winter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns and eggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land.
Marmalade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hot summer afternoon. Orlyks work
is ambitious. Because he produces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscape painting.
He calls it a portrait of days: an evolving visual journal of sunlight, land and his own emotional
response to a sense of place. The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down and listening to it.
His painting process is unconventional. Every afternoon he gets in his van, carefully chooses his
location, clamps his canvas to the steering wheel, and paints. He always asks permission of the
people who own the land. As a result he forges a connection with them.
Orlyk was born in 1947 in Troy, New York. He attended graduate school at University of Nebraska
at Lincoln, where he was taught by a number of influential Nebraskan painters. For over forty years
he has consistently shown his work across the country, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in
Hudson, New York and the Beamesderfer Gallery in Highland Park, New Jersey, as well as internationally. In 1995 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Salem, New York
with his family. For further inquires please contact Evera Sue Clary, McCartees Barn, 518 854

The Annual Cemetery Tour, a collaborative project of the Chapman Historical Museum and the
Glens Falls Community Theatre, will be held on Saturday, September 26 at the Pineview Cemetery
on Quaker Road. Please note that this is a change in venue, as previous tours have been held at the
Glens Falls Cemetery. As people walk through the cemetery at scheduled times, community theater players stand at gravesites and bring to life the stories of several of our community ancestors.
This event sold out last year, so we strongly recommend advance reservations. Walking tours are
scheduled for 10am, 10:30am, 11am, 12 noon, 12:30pm, and 1:00pm. If youd rather ride than
walk, we have two golf cart tours at 10:15 am and 12:15 pm. The cost is $12/person, $8/students,
and a $2 discount for members. Call 793-2826 for information or reservations, or e-mail
educator@chapmanmuseum.org.

ON THE FARM

Stuff You May Have Forgot Since Last Harvest

Some of these "gotta-do" pre-harvest items may
be burned into your memory, but in case they're This weeks ag report is
not, don't forget to
sponsored by:
-calibrate automatic header height systems so
that the header is talking correctly with the
combine.
-if you're using auto-steer, make sure all your
GPS satellite subscriptions are up to date. The
frequencies for some guidance systems were
altered this summer. Most on-board systems
were supposed to automatically make the
frequency switch, but it wouldn't hurt to make
sure everything is working before you head to the field.
-clean the fuel/water bowl or filter on the combine engine. Combines frequently get their fuel
tanks filled from portable fuel tanks, and portable fuel tanks are notorious for accumulating water
and crud. Tier III, Interim Tier IV and Final Tier IV engines are incredibly sensitive to water in
the fuel, so give them clean fuel and keep the water-catching filters clean.
-if you installed bigger or smaller tires and rims on the front or rear of the combine, be aware you
may have to change several things on the combine, including the calibration value in the cornerpost
display that calculates ground speed, and the tilt of the face-plate on the feeder house that determines
the angle of the header to the ground. And if you added a grain tank extension--make sure it will
clear the door of your machine shed, or the overhead wires in your barn yard.
Where To Cut Corners on Harvest Maintenance:nce. Everybody is trying to find ways to cut
machinery maintenance costs going into this year's harvest. My theory is to never cut corners on
anything that will stop, halt or slow harvest, so replace any drive belt, roller chain or other
component that is required to make a combine or tractor do its job during harvest.
What I question is the necessity of repairs to components or systems that are peripherals to
harvest. If it's going to take a new $1500 wiring harness to fix an auto-steer system, or repair the
self-steering system on a cornheadwhat is the ROI on that investment? Yes, I can run the
numbers and pencil out that an auto-steer system has the potential to save a certain amount of
grain and reduce the fuel-per-acre used, but.
Maintaining yield monitors, GPS satellite subscriptions, auto-steer systems and all the other
guidance and information systems can be expensive. How much of it is absolutely, without-adoubt necessary for you to have, to get your crops out of the fields?
Greasin' Gadgets
I'm not advocating or promoting the following products--I'm just reporting on some locking
grease gun tips I ran across this week.
The theory is that these special tips lock on grease zerks and eliminate the need to hold the tip of
the grease gun against the zerk while you pump grease. It's a small thing, but it can be annoying
and awkward to try and hold a grease gun tip in place when zerks are in odd or hard-to-reach
places.
The first locking grease gun tip is called a "Lock-n-Lube," and uses a small finger-actuated
paddle on the side of the tip to engage/disengage the tip from a zerk. The other locking tip doesn't
have a trade name, but is manufactured by Univer-Co in Canada. It looks like a miniature hydraulic
coupler, about the same size as a standard grease gun tip. It automatically locks on a zerk when
you press it in place, then you slide back a small collar when you want to remove it.
I bought one of the Univer-Co locking tips, and so far I like it. Only time will tell if it's durable
and will consistently connect without leaking grease. If it works, great. If it doesn't, I'll just add
it to the other tools and gadgets in my junk drawer that I was suckered into buying.
If you're interested in either of these locking grease gun tips, you can Google "Lock-n-Lube" to
find where and how to buy them. The Univer-Co tips are popping up at equipment dealerships
and hardware stores around the country, or you can find them on Amazon by looking for "UniverCo grease gun tip" on the Amazon site.

ALL STAND THE HANGING JUDGE IS COMING TO
THE COURTHOUSE! You are on trial and justice WILL be
served! Are you afraid of the harsh outcome that may await you at
the Historic Salem Courthouse this October during Fear This?
You should be. Transgressions, oversights, mistakes and lapses
of judgement we have them all, but do we ever really answer for
them.? REALLY answer for them? This year, sentences will be
handed down and punishments meted out. Come to Fear This and
witness the atonement of others if you dare! Fridays and Saturday
from 7 to 9:30 pm: October 16 & 17, 23 & 24 and 30 & 31. Rik
Sassa and his zany production crew have promised a Halloween
event that will scare and entertain all thrill-seekers. Fear This is in
its sixth year, and Rik has a large assortment of twists and turns
up his sleeve. Due to the scary nature of the event, it is not
recommended for very young children or adults with weak hearts.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 13 and under, $25 for
families (moms, dads or caretakers and children), and $5 for active
servicemen, firefighters and EMS works with ID cards. Anyone
interested in helping to stage the event should contact the
Courthouse at 518-854-7053.

SMALLEST FALCONS TO GET NEW HOMES FORT

EDWARD Join Friends of the Washington County Grasslands
IBA on Saturday, September 26 for a fun hands-on workshop
where you will build an American Kestrel nest box. New York
State DEC wildlife biologist Marcelo delPuerto will brief you
on a project to restore our smallest falcon species to a healthy
breeding population and provide instruction on building and
monitoring the nest boxes. The boxes you build will (hopefully)
become future homes for families of American Kestrels. We
will head out into the field after lunch to learn about site selection
and installation. Adirondack Wildlife Refuge & Rehab Center
will release a rehabbed kestrel during the field portion of the
workshop. Fee of $35 includes catered lunch and all materials
for nest box. Location: Rogers Island Visitors Center, Fort
Edward. Call Laurie at 518-796-6003 to register.
