INTRODUCTION
The scientific way of rearing fish in natural
waterbodies, paddy fields or artificial tanks
is pisciculture. It is the principal form of
aquaculture, while other methods may fall
under mariculture. Fish farming involes
raising fish commercially in tanks or
enclosure, usually for food. A facility that
releases juvenile fish into the wild for
recreational fishing or to supplement a
species natural numbers is generally
referred to as a fish hatchery. World wide,
the most important fish species used in fish
farming are carp, salman, tilapia and
catfish. The species of fish which can be
kept successfully in captivity throughout
their liver from egg to adult is exceedingly
limited in number. The various breeds of
goldfish are familiar examples.

The species of fish which can be kept
successfully in captivity throughout their liver
from egg to adult is exceedingly limited in
number. The various breeds of goldfish are
familiar examples, but the carp is almost the
only food-fish capable of similar domestication.
Various other food-fishes, both marine and
fresh-water, can be kept in ponds for longer or
shorter periods, but refuse to bread, while in
other cases the fry obtained from captive
breeders will not develop. Consequently there
are two main types of pisciculture to be
distinguished.
1.The rearing in confident of young fishes to
an edible stage.
2.The stocking of natural waters with eggs or
fry from captured breeders

In order to obtain high production of fish

meat per hectare of water body, fast growing
compatible species of fishes of different
feeding habits is very difficult to maintain in a
single habitat. Hence different types of fish
culture are practiced. Following are the
different types of fish farming.
1.POLYCULTURE
2.MONOCULTURE
3.MONOSEXCULTURE

1. POLYCULTURE
This is also called
composite fish culture or mixed fish farming, it
involves culturing together of an association of
fishes. In this type of culture, compatible fishes
of different
organic resources available in the pond are
exploited to the maximum extend by the
growing fishes in a most efficient manner
without harming each other.
2. MONOCULTURE
In monoculture, only a single speices of Fish is
cultured in a pond or rice field. In USA
catfishs are grown as monoculture as there
are commercially important.

Monoculture gives high production and

acceptances as a good food by the consumers.
4

Prawns are also grown by monoculture method

either in fresh water or salt water ponds.
3. MONOSEX CULTURE
Monosex culture is a type of pisciculture in
which only one of the either sex, males or
females are grown in the pond for the purpose
of producing maximum yield of fish meat
rearing Tilapia fry to fingerling stage when it is
possible by determine the sex. The monosex
culture of Tilapia is found to yield large
specimens for marketing.

CONCLUSION
Pisciculture plays an important role in the
economy of india. It helps in augmenting food
supply, generating employment, raising
nutritional level and earning valuble foreign
exchange. It is the principle
form of
aquaculture, while other methods may under
mariculture, world wide the most important
fish species used in fish farming are Carp,
Salman, Tilapia and Catfish. Pisciculture is
distinguished to the rearing in confinement of
young fishes to an edible stage and the stocking
of natural water with eggs or fry from captured
breeders.
