Fire Insulation in E/R

Course 2004

Fire Insulation - E/R

Purpose of the regulations/rules:

Containment of fire/ prevent spreading of fire.
Avoid excessive temperatures in neighbouring area.
Maintain structural integrity.

Fire Insulation - E/R

Basic Design Principles:

The fire integrity of a division between two spaces will depend
upon the category of the spaces.
The category of a space is defined based upon the function and fire
risk of the space.

No special requirements are imposed upon bulkheads in methods IIC and IIIC fire protection.
In case of method IIIC <<B>> class bulkheads of <<B-0>> rating shall be provided between spaces or groups of spaces of 50m2 and over in area.
For clarification as to which applies, see 200 and 500.
Where spaces are of the same numerical category and superscript 4) appears, a bulkhead or deck of the rating shown in the tables is only required when the
adjacent spaces are for a different purpose, e.g. in category (9). A galley next to a galley does not required a bulkhead but a galley next to a paint room or a
galley next to a provision store requires an <<A-0>> bulkhead.
Bulkheads separating the wheelhouse, chartroom and radio room from each other may be <<B-0>> rating.
<<A-0>> rating may be used if no dangerous goods are intended to be carried or if such goods are showed not less than 3m horizontally from such bulkhead.
Cargo spaces in which dangerous goods are intended to be carried will be specially considered.
Bulkheads and decks separating ro-ro cargo spaces shall be capable of being closed reasonably gastight and such divisions shall have <<A>> class integrity
on so far as is reasonable and practicable.
Fire insulation need not be fitted if the machinery spaces in category (7) has little or no fire risk. (e.g. air conditioning room)

Where an asterisk appears in the tables, the division is required to be of steel or other equivalent material but is not required to be of <<A>> class standard.

A Class Divisions
Are those divisions formed by bulkheads and decks which
comply with the following criteria:
1. They are constructed of steel or other equivalent material.
2. They are suitably stiffened.
3. They prevent the passage of smoke and flame to the end of the 1
hour standard fire test.

4. They are insulated with approved
non-combustible material such that
the average temperature of the
unexposed side will not rise more
than 140 above the original
temperature, nor will the maximum
hot spot temperature rise more than
180 above the original temperature
within the following time:

5. The administration has required a test of a prototype bulkhead or

deck in accordance with the IMO fire test procedures code to
ensure that it meets the requirements for integrity and
temperature rise.

B Class Divisions
Are those divisions formed by bulkheads, decks, ceilings or
linings which comply with the following criteria:
1. They are constructed of approved non-combustible materials
and all materials used in the construction and erection of B
class divisions are non-combustible. (Combustible veneers may
be permitted.)
2. They prevent the passage of flame to the end of the first half
hour of the standard fire test.

3. They have an insulation value such
that the average temperature of the
unexposed side will not rise more
than 140C above the original
temperature, nor will the maximum
hot spottemperature rise more
than 225C above the original
temperature, within the following
time:
