Tentative Session List (9/11/15)

Session Name
Boundless: Engaging International
Students Virtually Throughout the
Admissions Cycle

Abstract

Knowledge
Community
A record number of international students enrolled in US institutions this past year, but what factors motivate them? How can you get on IEM KC
their radar? How can you influence their choice of school? We'll share the latest research findings about the expectations, influences, and
concerns of international undergraduate and graduate students. Now in its third year, theresearch study reveals year-over-year trends
that are impacting international recruiting. Additionally,Aaron Bixler, associate director of International Recruitment for Miami University
of Ohio, will discuss the university's international recruiting strategy. He'll explore how they're using online communications to improve
the experience for students throughout enrollment.

Whip up a Memorable Recruitment

Speech-Your Recipe for Lasting
Impressions

Whether new to the field, an occasional recruiter, or an old pro, we can fall into comfortable routines of regurgitating the same bland
IEM KC
information about our schools: campus size, student-to-faculty ratio, and number of student clubs. Are you saying the right things to get
students hungry to come talk to you? This interactive session will take you through a series of activities to help you spice up your 1-3
minute recruitment pitch to students, parents, and counselors. Grab your apron and come ready to cook up a gourmet recruitment
speech!

Comments Needed: When Government

Agencies Ask For Your Input

When government agencies ask for input from stakeholders, that means you! These requests for comments (on guidance or new
KC ISSS
regulations) are the international education community's opportunity to explain to the government how higher education works and what
impact their decisions have. This session will discuss how to go about writing a comment letter, including: how to determine who signs a
comment letter; what types of letters are most effective; what issues to address.

Understanding Chinese Credentials

Educational documents in Chinese can seem daunting; even school-issued translations vary greatly in quality. But fluency in Mandarin is
not required to identify key words and distinguish between similar documents. This session covers different types of Chinese educational
documents (including secondary and post-secondary), with tips on recognizing important Chinese terminology, tools to aid translation,
and some red flags for detecting fraud.

Indiaaaagghhhh to Indiaaaaahhhhh!!!

India presents a daunting challenge for anyone who is just starting to recruit undergraduate students. Conflicting information about the IEM KC
available market size, growth in Indian undergraduates, opportunities to recruit, etc. muddy the waters. No wonder a recruiter's typical
reaction is "Indiaaaagghhhh". This session will provide greater clarity into the current conditions for recruiting in India and suggestions on
how to enhance recruitment efforts, whether you're new to India or have been recruiting there for decades

universities. In this session an international internship provider and advisers from two universities who have large experiential learning
programs will shed some light on these new opportunities and how to approach them on your campus. What exactly do international
internships look like and how do I vet them? How should I talk about them? What aresome common questions/concerns and how do I

nature and results of a proactive developmental advising experience and opens the discussion on what universities can do to support
students beyond the traditional advising protocol.
