BIARRITZ VACATION

To seek solace for his disappointments

in Madrid, Rizal took a vacation in the resort
city of Biarritz on the fabulous French Riviera.
He was a guest of the rich Boustead family
(Mr. Bousted, Adelina, Nelie and Aunt Isabel.
He was warmly welcomed by Mr. Bousted
because of his talents. As a family guest he
was treated with friendliness and hospitality
by this family.
Romance with Nelly Bousted
Rizal having lost Leonor, came to
entertain considerable affection to Nellie,
prettier and younger daughter of the Mr.
Boustead. He found Nellie to be a real
Filipina, highly intelligent, vivacious in
temperament and morally upright. He told
his friends about his love for Nelly except for
Blumentritt, and his intention to propose to
her.
Antonio Luna, who had previously
loved and lost Nelly, encouraged Rizal to woo
and marry her. He wrote a letter to Rizal,
saying good things about Nellie and
congratulates him for being one of a kind to
Nelly, encourage Rizal to woo and marry her.
With encourage of his friends Rizal
courted Nelly who, in turn, reciprocated his
affection.
Unfortunately his marriage proposal
failed for two reasons:
1. he refused to give up his Catholic faith
and be a converted to protestant as
Nelly demand
2. Nelly's mother did not like Rizal as a
son-in-law.
Although they did not get married, they
parted as good friends.
El Filibusterismo finished in Biarritz
Frustrated in romance, Rizal found
consolation in writing. Evidently, while
wooing Nellie and enjoying so many
magnificent moonlight nights with her, he
kept working on his second novel which he
began to write in Calamba 1887
The eve of his departure from Biarritz
to Paris, he finished the manuscript of El
Filibusterismo.
To Paris and Back to Brussels
Rizal bade farewell to the hospitable
and friendly Bousteads and proceeded to
Paris by train.

From Paris he wrote to his friend, Jose

Ma. Basa, expressing his desire to go to that
British colony and practice ophthalmology in
order to earn his living.
By The middle of April, Rizal was back
in Brussels.

Retirement
from
the
Propaganda
Movement
Since abdicating his leadership in
Madrid, owing to the intrigues of his jealous
compatriots,
Rizal
retired
from
the
Propaganda Movement or reform crusade.
Rizal
notified
the
Propaganda
authorities in Manila to cancel his monthly
allowance and devote the money to some
better cause.
Rizals notification was contained in a
letter addressed to Mr. A.L. Lorena
(pseudonym
of
Deodato
Arellano)
Rizal stopped writing for La Solidaridad
With
his
retirement
from
the
Propaganda Movement, Rizal stopped writing
articles for La Solidaridad.
Marcelo H. del PIlar realized that
Rizal's collaboration was essentials because
the reform was declining with that, his help
was very much needed because Rizal is one
of the main contributors in LA SOLIDARIDAD.
He wrote Rizal a letter telling him to
put aside any of his resentments and
continue their reforms and mission.
Rizal wrote back to M.H del Pilar and
told him 3 reason:
1. He need time to work on his Book.
2. He wanted others Filipino to work
also.
3. It was better if del PIlar would be
the
only one who would lead the
reform to direct the policy such as
Del Pilar understand it.
