CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

Catechetical Sunday --this weekend-- is a wonderful

opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays
(because of our Baptism into this faith community) in
handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospels.
This is our opportunity to rededicate ourselves to this
mission.
Thank you to parents, grandparents, priests, sisters,
neighbors, people in the pews....and the dedicated people
who step forward each week and teach our children,
teenagers, young adults and peers about the Gift of Christ
in their own lives and in the teachings of the Church.

WERE GLAD YOU ARE HERE

If you are new to the parish, visiting from across town, across the country, or from other parts of the world, welcome
&
you for worshiping with us! Fill out one of the Welcome Cards in the pew racks and drop it in the collection
basket or give it one of the priests. Stop by after Mass and introduce

Church Cleaning, September 21-27, Florence Katrina & Rose Ferraris

A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers

The members of new institutions should penetrate more deeply, and

possess with a firmer grasp, the great primary truths of philosophy
and of natural and revealed theology, in order to recast these in view
of refuting the prevalent errors of the age, and to meet satisfactorily
its intellectual wants and aspirations. [On the Mission of New
Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Todays second reading warns that a

heart consumed with avarice and envy leads to jealousy, strife,
conflicts and disputes. A giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead
with the psalmist. Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your
name, O Lord, for its goodness.
See Psalm 54

Pastoral Corner
The Word "Selfie" Says It All......
Look at me! Look at me! See what I'm doing. See how important I am! I'm the focus and the center of my life!
Look at me! Look at me!
Like Narcissus in ancient mythology who fell in love with his own image, many in today's culture and society reflect
his preoccupation with self, self-promotion, self-importance, and selfish love.
Contrast this approach to life with the one proposed by Jesus in the Gospel where the ideal disciple is a little child, a
powerless, vulnerable and dependent child. (If many of the Pharisees of Jesus' day, and even at times the Disciples
themselves had smart phones with cameras, I'm sure their photo libraries would be filled with "selfies".
We must never forget that most of the Pharisees in Jesus' time were among the holiest and most devout people in
Israel. They were scrupulously faithful in their devotion to ritual, in their prayer and their fasting, in their keeping
the rules. Their problem, as Jesus saw things, was that they just didn't get it. They thought their praying and their
fasting and their faithfulness to devotions and the sacrificial offerings they made were about themselves, and saving
themselves, rather than about building the Kingdom of God. And sadly, much of the same could be said about many
who otherwise consider themselves to be holy and devout and faithful about the external practices of their religion.
It is never about us. It must always be about Jesus, about living as he did and treating others as he did. Like
children in the Gospels, we must never forget our vulnerability and our utter dependence on God and our
interdependencies with one another.
To paraphrase a Lenten theme, 'prayer and fasting must always lead to almsgiving'. Our prayers and devotions
must always lead to actions for justice and building the Kingdom.
