WBGU in FCC sale

Station to remain on air
BY STEVEN COBURN-GRIFFIS
DHI Media Staff Writer

BOWLING GREEN At a meeting on Friday, the Bowling Green State

University Board of Trustees voted to
authorize President Mary Ellen Mazey and
her designees to participate in a Federal
Communications Commission spectrum
auction on behalf of BGSU. Conditional to
that, the board stipulated that participation
must ensure a continued broadcast presence on the part of WBGU. The scenario
approved by the trustees will allow BGSU
to consider bids from the commission for
its 600 MHz UHF spectrum.
The trustees have voted to allow the
university to participate in the auction in
a way that assures that WBGU remains on
the air to serve the Northwest Ohio community, said David Kielmeyer, BGSUs
chief marketing and communications offi-

cer.
The decision allows BGSU to potentially generate revenue from the auction while
keeping the station on the air and continuing to support the Universitys academic
programs and provide hands-on learning
opportunities for students.
WBGU remains an important part of
Bowling Green State Universitys mission
of education, career development and service and will continue to be a resource for
the University and the community, Mazey
said.
According Kielmeyer, the boards
directive to maintain WBGUs broadcast
presence limits the universitys options to
just two: channel share with an amenable
broadcaster or move to the VHF spectrum.
Both options are still on the table and
were looking closely at them, he asserted.
Theres probably a greater likelihood of
VHF.

Lehmann said her favorite part
of the celebration is seeing classmates and friends and catching up.
I enjoy seeing people you

Lehmann said. We talk about
what Main Street used to look like

It brings back good memories.

DELPHOS There was no place like
home for 500-plus attendees of the 2015
Delphos Canal Days Toast to the City
Thursday evening.
Special guests supported the Wizard
of Oz theme, including Dorothy and Toto
and, of course, the Wicked Witch of the
West, who was looking for her ruby slippers.
Canal Days Chair Dana Sterling raised
a glass with Mayor Michael Gallmeier
officially kick off the weekend.
This is the ninth annual toast and the
12th year the current committee has put
this together and I dont know if everyone
knows this, but Canal Days, in that time,
has given back more than $400,000 to the
community, Sterling said. All of you are
helping to make Delphos a better place to
live. There is no place like home.
Canal Days Queen Maddie Pohlman and
her court and Grand Marshall of the 2015

Canal Days Parade, Marthanne Lehmann,

were introduced.
Canal Commission Trustee Lou Hohman
invited everyone to the museum to see
new exhibits and improvements during the
weekends festivities and reminded everyone the Miami-Erie Canal is the reason for
the celebration.
The Music Man Alan Siebert brought
an energy-packed performance with his
one-man-band.
Gatherings are nothing if not for the
food, which was catered by local and area
restaurants, with a variety of small-plate
items. Baked to Perfection, Chik-N-House,
Delphos Eagles, Pizza Hut, The Fort, Cabo
Mexican Restaurant, Cooking Country
Classic, Dicks Steak House, Rustic Cafe
and Topp Chalet provided a delicious array
of choices.
Jubilee and Heidelberg Distributing provided the wine and other beverages and
Celebrations and Flowers on Fifth the
decorations.

Country
Lake vacation closes busy summer;
fresh peaches to can and enjoy
BY LOVINA EICHER

We had a nice few days staying by the lake. Our family

enjoyed fishing and swimming. We had some very hot days so
it was nice to be close to the lake. Thanks to my friend Ruth
for writing the column for me last week.
We attended the wedding of Leander and Karen. Joes
Uncle Solomon and Aunt Nancy from Ohio joined us at
Timothy and Elizabeths house for supper. Joe helped Timothy
unload some hay. We had a good supper with barbequed
chicken on the menu. Solomon and Nancy came to our house
for the night. I made breakfast for all of us before they left the
next morning. We enjoyed having them here!
On Sept. 2, our youngest child Kevin turned 10 years old.
He was excited to go to church as he gets to sit with the boys
now instead of with Joe. When the boys and girls turn ten, they
can sit with the girls and boys ten years and older.
School started yesterday and Joseph, Lovina, and Kevin
had a nice first day of school.
We have peaches here that need to be canned. Ill probably
put some in the freezer too.
Last week, Timothys sister had a Norwex shower for
Elizabeth. I had never been to a Norwex party (cleaning
products that are chemically safer). Elizabeth received all the
hostess benefits. A wash line was also presented to Timothy
and Elizabeth that night. Family members had filled gallon-,
quart- or sandwich-size bags with small gifts for Timothy or
Elizabeth. It was interesting to see what people came up with. Lovina was happy to get some peaches canned this week
An example of items in the bags were soup plates, bowls, spic- and also made a fresh peach crunch (see recipe). (Submitted
es, seasonings, kitchen items, nails, screws, baking supplies, photo)
buttons, pins, needles, band aids, etc. They received a lot of
nice things. The bags were all pinned to a clothes line hung

Taming the itch that just wont quit

Controlling the symptoms of allergy season

BY DR. BONNIE JONES, DVM
Tis the seasonthat time of year
when pets and pet owners have restless
days and sleepless nights because the
itch wont stop itching. In the veterinary profession, we call it peak allergy
season. When hay fever sufferers are
most miserable, generally pets are, too.
The difference is that most allergic pets
reflect their allergies through itchy skin
rather than respiratory and eye symptoms like their human counterparts.
When presented with a pet that is
scratching, I will first ask a series of
questions about the pets diet, and the
timing, extent and severity of symptoms.
Next, I perform a thorough physical
exam of my patient. If warranted, I will
do testing that might include skin scrapings for mites, allergy or thyroid blood
testing. Once I have obtained a complete
medical history, conducted an exam and
reviewed test results, by the process of
elimination, a diagnosis is usually close
at hand.
In recent years,however, I have
observed an uptick in pets being diagnosed with food allergies. These patients
are usually diagnosed before two years
of age and often begin having symptoms
as early as the first few months of life.
The typical food allergic patient may
have recurrent yeast ear infections or
Staph bacterial skin infections, especially on the lower abdomen. Or, the
sole symptom may be mild to moderate,
generalized itching that may be responsive early on to administration of oral
antihistamines, such as Benadryl.
As time goes on, the food allergic patient will get progressively worse
and multiple skin problems will ensue.
These include difficult to resolve ear
infections, ongoing rashes, Staph bacterial and/or yeast skin infections, anal
itching, facial rubbing, or foot licking.
I teach clients the phrase Ears and
rearsthink food allergy first because

the correlation rings true more than 90%

of the time.
Do not be surprised if your veterinarian asks you to alter your pets diet to
resolve its skin or ear problems. Keep in
mind, that there are very specific rules
you will need to abide by to guarantee
you dont inadvertently cheat on your
pets diet. Your pets treats must contain
the same ingredients found in its new
food. Pet toothpastes, supplements and
medications, including heartworm preventives that contain food flavorings,
will need to be changed to products
without food ingredients. Trash raids
and snacking outdoors on animal feces
and other items must be avoided as well.
Now for some good newsmarshmallows are considered hypoallergenic
( faux food as I like to call them)
making them a good choice for hiding
oral medications or as occasional treats
for food allergic patients. The bad news
is cheating on your pets special food
allergic diet can result in your pets skin
problems relapsing and enduring for as
long as 30 days!
While food allergies are becoming
increasingly more common, I would
be remiss if I didnt address the other
reasons why pets itch. And, sadly, as
much as 50 percent of the skin problems
veterinarians diagnose at this time of
year are STILL flea-related. As always,
prevention is the best plan when it
comes to flea control! Once you realize
you have a flea problem, it has already
existed for 4 to 8 weeks, plenty of time
for multiple flea generations to be living
with your family in your home! It will
then take 4 to 8 weeks, with aggressive
flea control measures, to eliminate your
environmental infestation.
Please listen to your veterinarians
advice regarding flea control: use veterinarian-recommended flea control products on ALL of your pets, consistently,
properly, and ALL YEAR ROUND!

Dr. Bonnie Jones, DVM

Once your veterinarian has ruled out
fleas and food allergy, she will then be
able to determine what the underlying
cause for your pets skin problem might
be.
If your dog is diagnosed with environmental allergies, you should ask your
veterinarian if a newer canine allergy
medicine called Apoquel is right for
your dog. This medication is not a steroid, antihistamine nor cyclosporine. It
is a neurotransmitter inhibitor that tells
the dogs brain Youre not itchy, no
matter what the allergic source might be.
Apoquel has been very helpful for
many of my patients, especially those
with multiple, previously uncontrolled
allergies. Dog owners love that this
medication works as quickly as within
four hours and has seemingly no side
effects, unlike other allergy medications.
Apoquels current disadvantages include
limited availability and cost.
If you are growing tired of hearing
your pets thumping or slurping, see
your veterinarian. With a proper diagnosis, well help you put an end to your
pets allergic misery so everyone can get
a good nights rest again!

Getting accurate
corn/soybean yield
numbers
BY JAMES HOORMAN
Ag Educator
OSU-Extension
Putnam County

A wet spring/summer and

persistent rains have generated
highly variable harvesting conditions for 2015 in both soybeans and corn. There is height,
maturity, and expected yield
differences within many fields
that bring about the importance
of combine adjustments but
also yield monitoring calibration and management.
Proper management of the
yield monitor in 2015 will be a
key in order to generate accurate and reliable yield data. The
expectation is that grain moisture and test weight, along with
grain flow through the combine, will vary within passes
and across the field. Therefore,
the flow and moisture sensors
on combines must be calibrated
to these expected conditions in
order to log accurate data. The
following best practice guidelines provide pre-harvest and
harvest yield monitor tips.
Pre-Harvest: 1) Turn on
your display and back-up all
prior yield monitor data. Save
this data to a secure data storage device.
2) Ensure the display, DGPS
receiver, and other components
have all been updated to their
most recent software versions.
Contact your dealer or look
online to find the most recent
versions.
3) Start-up combine and
turn on display to check that
the a) Display indicates everything is functioning correctly
or properly connected and b)
GPS receiver is providing a
position and has differential
correction.
4) Check wiring for damage and that all connections
are tight as you service the
combine. Check the moisture
sensor for debris build-up or
damage plus clean the housing
of any old grain. The fins on
the moisture sensor must be
absolutely clean and not bent.
5) Check for damage or wear
on the mass flow sensor (top of
the clean grain elevator). This
point is especially important on
late model combines equipped
with yield monitors as the wear
on these plates influences mass
flow measurements.
Calibration at Harvest:
1) If you have replaced any
yield monitor components
or the clean grain elevator,
recalibration is required. Old

calibration numbers will not

work since changes in how
grain impacts or interacts with
sensors influence the readings
and thereby yield calculations.
If you purchase a new or used
combine with an existing
yield monitor installed, double
check for proper installation
and plan to re-calibrate.
2) Grain carts equipped
with scales can be used for
calibrating yield monitors but
consider: a) If they are correctly weighing loads. Cross
reference with scale tickets or
weights from a certified scales.
b) Stop on level ground for a
few seconds to determine load
weight.
3) Take the time to calibrate
the mass flow or volumetric
sensors over the full range.
4) Many older yield monitors may have 1 or 2-point calibration procedures. For these
systems, you can have different calibration numbers for
low, medium and high flows
through the combines. Match
the calibration number to the
field conditions.
5) For those yield monitors with multi-point calibration procedures, use the recommended 4 to 6 calibration
loads. These loads will be
captured over varying grain
flows (low to high) by either
changing ground speed or cut
width as outlined in the operator manual.
Rules of thumb on managing calibration numbers: 1)
Corn and soybeans require separate mass flow calibrations.
2) Need a different calibration
for high moisture corn (20%)
versus lower moisture corn. 3)
Need a different calibration for
green versus dry stem soybeans. 4) Grain test weight can
influence mass flow sensors
so again, you might need to
manage different calibration
numbers as test weight differs
by 2 or more values between
fields. 5) Double check calibration routinely for a crop
and operating conditions. 6)
Remember to calibrate grain
moisture sensor for each crop.
7) Calibrate temperature sensor
for those requiring this step.
Finally, take good notes on
field and operating conditions
during harvest. Having good
notes as well John Fulton, OSU
Agricultural Engineer wrote the
following article in the CORN
Newsletter 2015-29. Andrew
Klopfenstein, Kaylee Port and
Scott Shearer also contributed.

DELPHOS St. Johns

honored its 2005 football state
championship team before
the Blue Jays game against
Midwest Athletic Conference
for Fort Recovery Friday
night at Stadium Park.
Coached by Todd Schulte,
St. Johns finished with a
13-2 record.
Schultes 2015 team is
striving to be consistent
with the basic fundamentals
of football, according to the
17-year coach. We are going
through growing pains and
just need to build on the good

things that happen during the

game.
That includes Friday
nights 26-20 loss to the
Indians.
Fort Recovery took the
opening kickoff and quickly
drove down the field on a
7-play drive. Running back
Kyle Schroer scored at the
8:51 mark on a 1-yard run.
St. Johns first possession
of the night failed to move
the ball and junior Eric Vogt
boomed a 58-yard punt that
was downed at the Indians 1.
Fort Recovery converted
a pair of third downs before
Troy Elwer picked off a
Caleb Martin pass at the 33.
Jake Youngpeter scram-

There was a mixed success stories last week.

Yours truly and Guest Picker Dale Metzger
both went 9-3, though in different ways: I was
4-2 in the colleges and 5-1 in the pros and he was
5-1 and 4-2.
The second Regular, Erin Cox, was 7-5 (3-3/42) and she picked the Kentucky game correctly
(the swine!).
The third Regular, John Parent, was 3-9 (2-4/15).
That makes me now 17-6 12-5 in college
and 5-1 in the pros.
Erin is 15-8 (11-6 and 4-2) and John is 11-11
(10-6/1-5).
The GP is 16-7 (12-5/4-2).
Unfortunately, due to missed connections, we
will not have a GP this week.
Mea culpa!
COLLEGE: Georgia Tech at Notre Dame;
Auburn at LSU; California at Texas; Pittsburgh at
Iowa; Ole Miss at Alabama; BYU at UCLA.
NFL: Seattle at Green Bay; San Diego at
Cincinnati; Detroit at Minnesota; Houston at
Carolina; New England at Buffalo; Tampa Bay at

JIM METCALFE
COLLEGE
GEORGIA TECH: Notre Dame without starting quarterback and tailback. They did get lucky
last week but the luck of the Irish wont carry them
this week against run-happy Techsters.
LSU: Auburn needed OT to beat Jacksonville
State? I think this just goes to show the Little
Guys are catching up to the Big Boys. Be that
as it may, Death Valley Tiger Stadium is an
asylum even during the day. Too much talent over
a lot of talent.
CALIFORNIA: It wasnt that long ago when
these two teams were in the conversation for
national titles. I will say it again: Charlie Strong
will rebuild the Longhorns if they give him
time. Hes not there yet.
IOWA: Hawkeyes BJ Beathard is a playuh
and offensive line is quickly rounding into form.
No one really knows what Panthers have anymore.
I like the Hawks in Iowa City.
ALABAMA: Much as Id like to write Ole
Miss, its the same old, same old: Nick Saban just
gets waves of talent and Ole Miss is trying to catch
up. Maybe if game werent in Tuscaloosa
UCLA: BYU has flat-out lucked out for
two weeks. That kind of divine intervention just
doesnt last, especially with Bruins in the hunt
again on a consistent basis.
PROS
GREEN BAY: The not-so Frozen Tundra
of Lambeau Field. Yeah, Jordy Nelson not there
but its not as if Rodgers doesnt have an arsenal
full of weapons. Could be another shootout; I like
Packers in that kind of game.
CINCINNATI: I give Bengals the edge with
Chargers having to fly east and having to get out
of bed earlier than normal for West Coast team.
Chargers just baffle me sometimes as well with
their talent but at times scratching your head play.
Bengals playing with chip on their shoulder.
DETROIT: Lions are still formidable on

draw from the 2 pulled with
Jays within 7-6 with 2:43 left
in the opening period. Jesse
Dittos kick was good to knot
the score at 7.
Fort Recovery scored
in only four plays as Will
Homan took the pigskin 47
yards to the end zone. The
extra point was blocked as
Fort Recovery led 13-7 with
1:12 remaining in the quarter.
Vogt returned the kickoff to the 44. Later in the
drive, he made a spectacular catch in double coverage
to haul in a 41-yard pass
from Youngpeter down to
the Tribes 10. Reindels run
moved the ball to the 4 before
Youngpeter scored his second
touchdown with another QB
draw. Dittos extra point gave
the Jays a 14-13 lead with
8:51 left in the half.
After a pair of scoreless
drives, Fort Recovery took
the lead after a 34-yard run
by Schroer and Martin pulled
off a perfect fake handoff
to perfection to score on a
18-yard run with only 60
ticks left of the new Stadium
Park scoreboard. The important point-after was good as
the Indians took the lead back
20-14 with a 4-play, 78-yard
drive.
The Jays offense did
reach the Indians 29 but
Youngpeters Hail Mary

HOUSTON: Laid an egg last week against

Patriots wont be as generous any takers on

NEW ORLEANS: Saints also laid an egg

awful. Ill take an egg in the Big Easy, especially
with Brees against THAT defense.

GEORGIA TECH: Georgia Tech has a good
offense and the Notre Dame defense struggled last
week. I suspect the luck o the Irish has ended.
LSU: Ill take LSU at home.
CALIFORNIA: The Golden Bears; who could

Good Point! Or so I think!!!)
IOWA: Iowa has football? I thought it just

OLE MISS: I like Ole Miss this year, dont

BYU: I went back and forth on this game

GREEN BAY: Green Bay with its fellow

CINCINNATI: I picked them to win, so win

HOUSTON: I just felt like spreading the winning love around here.
BUFFALO: How many times is the NFL going

NEW ORLEANS: Jameis Winston is not so
great in the NFL.
JOHN PARENT
There are two kinds of people that pick games:
those who are humble and those who are about to
be (EN: What if you are both??? LOL). Last week
was a humbling experience for me to say the least.
But, there is plenty of season left
CollegeGeorgia Tech at Notre Dame- Without Malik
Zaire, the Irish are leaning on an untested quarterback. At the same time, Tech looks strong,
especially on offense. I think the Irish have more
talent, however, and playing at home makes everyone more comfortable. Notre Dame keeps its title
hopes alive with another close win.
Auburn at LSU- Auburn hasnt been very
impressive on offense and LSUs defense just
smothered the Mississippi State running game. At
Death Valley, Ill take the Tigers in a low-scoring
affair, maybe 17-13.
Cal at Texas- Texas defense has been bad this
year, especially against the pass. Cal quarterback
Jared Goff has been terrific. Who am I to buck a

bounds as the half ended.

After a fruitless opening
drive of the third by the Jays,
the Indians were given a short
field as the punt was returned
to the Jays 48. The St. Johns
defense answered the call.
On the next drive, the Jays
lost Youngpeter with 6:28 left
in the third and sophomore
Troy Elwer took over.
The Indians reached the
Blue Jay 26 but was forced
to punt and it was downed
at the 1.
With Vogt now injured,
Troy Schwinnen punted from
his own end zone out to the
37 but the Jays D stiffened.
With neither team scoring
in the second half, the Indians
changed that in one play as
Martin connected with a
wide-open Wenning for a
63-yard touchdown as 9:00
showed in the clock. Fort
Recovery attempt a 2-point
conversion was stopped as
the Indians led 26-14.
Two drives later, St. Johns
partially blocked a punt and
took over at midfield and
reached the end zone on a
4-yard TD toss from Elwer to
Reindel in heavy traffic with
3:28 remaining. The PAT was
no good as the Indians lead
was reduced to 26-20.
The Jays defense gave
them one final chance to win
the game but Fort Recoverys
defense stopped their final
drive to improve to 4-0.
St. Johns had 103 yards
rushing and 131 in the air.

trend? Ill take the Golden Bears.

Pitt at Iowa - The game is in Iowa City but
that shouldnt matter much. The strength of the
Panthers team is on defense and defense travels.
Pitt looks a lot like a Big Ten team, which makes
it even more ridiculous that it isnt one (but
Rutgers and Nebraska areEN: I heartily agree!
Who draws up these leagues, anyway? Wrongway
Feldman?), and Iowa has had to rely on some trick
plays to generate offense already this year. Seems
like a bad combination. Ill take Pitt.
Ole Miss at Alabama- Ole Miss beat the Tide
last season, but that game was in Oxford. No
chance Bama takes the Rebels anywhere near as
lightly this season. At home, the Tide rolls.
BYU at UCLA - Well, I said it couldnt happen
twice in a row, and it happened twice in a row.
Still, Im not backing down. It wont happen three
times in a row! UCLA, with its freshman quarterback, will remember to knock it down when the
Cougars try their next hail mary, or maybe theyll
just be up two scores by then so it wont matter.
Bruins by 14.
NFLSeattle at Green Bay- The Packers were better
than I expected against the Bears (though Chicago
almost never beats Green Bay, so what was I
thinking?) and the Seahawks lost to the Rams. Im
not putting anything into that Rams game though,
Jeff Fischer has done that to Seattle before. These
are probably the best two teams in the NFC, and
that will stay the case even after Seattle opens 0-2.
Packers at home.
San Diego at Cincinnati- The Chargers looked
great on offense last week. The Bengals held down
the Raiders. San Diego was more impressive, and
Andy Dalton doesnt inspire much confidence, so
Ill take the Bolts.
Detroit at Minnesota- The Lions had a Week
One win all sewn up until they forgot to play any
defense in the second half. Minnesota was roughed
up by a 49ers team most expect to struggle this
year. Adrian Peterson will be better, but not good
enough. The Lions win in a shootout.
Houston at Carolina- Brian Hoyer, everyones
favorite Browns quarterback (EN: Ouch!!!), lasted
half a game in Houston before being benched.
Ryan Mallett gets the call in Charlotte and I expect
the Texans to respond. Houston wins.
New England at Buffalo- See? I hate games
like this one. If I were actually putting money on
these picks, I would stay as far away from this
game as possible. First, I have a strong dislike
for the Patriots, which clouds my judgement (EN:
Read Erins comments above!). Secondly, the
familiarity between Rex Ryan and the Patriots
makes this difficult to call. Tyron Taylor looked
good in his first Bills start and the game is at Ralph
Wilson, so Ill take the home team, complete with
working headsets.
Tampa at New Orleans- Well, the Titans made
the Bucs look really bad last week, and we are
talking about a team that was the leagues worst
last season. James Winston will get better as he
goes along, but Tampa is no match for the Saints
this week (which, with my luck, means that
Winston will throw for 3 TDs in a Tampa Bay
upset win). Ill take New Orleans.

Something had to give.

Friday nights Northwest
Conference gridiron opener at
Charles Memorial Memorial
Stadium had a classic matchup of contrasting styles:
Spencervilles ball-control
offense versus Adas high-octane passing game.
In the process, the Bearcat
defense perhaps the forgotten portion of the equation
grounded that Bulldog attack,
picking off four passes and
sacking Bulldog signal-callers nine times for minus-52
yards in a 35- dismantling.
Ada did get its share of
completions 16-of-36 for
176 yards but only one big
play and those four picks.
I am so proud of the
defense, especially the line.
We talked all week about if
we let (Seth Conley) stand
back there all day, he will
pick us apart, Spencerville
head man John Zerbe began.
He got his share of completions you know we will
but to hold them to one
touchdown is a great team
effort.
The Bearcats (4-0, 1-0
NWC) had two 100-yard
ground-gainers: Zach Goecke
186 yards on 22 totes and
Chris Picker 117 yards on 17
carries.
Ada has traditionally
given us fits up front defensively. They loaded the box
again tonight, as they usually do, Zerbe said. We got
some good blocking, enough
to ground out some yards
and take time off the clock.
Our style of offense is perfect
against their style of offense;
that kind of takes them out of
their rhythm of offense.
Ada did reach the Bearcat
35 on its first possession of
the game but the Black Attack
defense held on downs.
As well, Spencerville
attained Bulldog space the
36 but also turned it over
on downs.
Ada drove from the 37
to the Bearcat 18 in seven
plays but an incompletion, a
12-yard sack of the harried
Conley (sacked 8 times for
minus-50 yards) and a pick
by Goecke set the Bearcats up
at the 24.
Goecke ran for 17, Calvin
Wilson for eight and then
Goecke took a handoff off
right guard, got through traffic, found a seam to the left
sideline, stiff-armed a wouldbe tackler at Adas 35 and
was off. Damon Blair tacked
on the point-after-touchdown
for a 7-0 edge at 2:50 of the
opening period.
The turnover bug struck
again at the Ada 36 four
plays into its drive. Conley
dropped for a screen and
Wyatt Krouskop picked it off
at the 35 and took it to the
house. However, Blairs PAT
was wide for a 13-0 spread at
1:24 of the first.
The Bearcat defense forced
a 3-and-out and their offense
started at the 40. Five plays
hence including Pickers
41-yard jaunt at the Ada
1, Picker burst over left guard

to paydirt. He also caught

Mason Nourses 2-point pass
for a 21-0 edge with 9:15 left
in the first half.
Ada then started its next
drive at the 45 (off a short
kick) and drove to the Bearcat
17 in 10 plays. However, on
play 11, a 4th-and-5, Goecke
blitzed and sacked Conley for
a 10-yard loss.
An intentional grounding
on the Bearcats on the ensuing drive forced a punt and
Ada took over at the host 38.
Ada finally got into the end
zone on play five at the 26.
Conley found Colten Shafer
on a short route inside the
right numbers, he juked a
defender and headed for six.
Aaron Everharts conversion
made it 21-7 with 2:02 left
in the half and it stayed that
way.
Spencerville commenced
the opening drive of the second half at the 20 and used 12
running plays to gain the Ada
8. However, a fumble on the
next play was recovered by
Adas Hunter Purdy at the 1.
Four punts later the last
on a personal foul penalty on
the hosts that short-circuited its promising drive into
Ada territory the Bulldogs
started at the 22. Conley,
forced to scramble to the left
and nearing the sideline, was
hit while passing and Alex
Vickers got the pick at the
Ada 19. Three plays later
at the, Wilson showed good
power over right guard to the
end zone. Blair made it 28-7
with 8:45 remaining.
On play 2 of Adas next
series, Jolliff was picked off
by the 6-2, 250-pound lineman Vickers and he set the
offense up at the 11. A play
later at the 10, Picker blasted
off right guard and would not
be denied the end zone with
7:26 remaining. Blair tacked
on the final point.

Jefferson freshman Maddie McConnahea tries to turn

the teams 2-2 girls soccer draw Thursday inside Kalida
Soccer Stadium. (DHI Media/Charlie Warnimont)

KALIDA Thursday
evenings girls soccer match
between Kalida and Delphos
Jefferson was a defensive
chess match.
Kalidas defense was
closely paying attention to
Jefferson standout Maddie
McConnahea, while on the
other side Jefferson was try-

ing to force Kalida wide and

not give them a good look at
the goal.
When all was said and
done at the Kalida soccer
field ,the two teams had
played to a 2-2 draw in nonleague action.
Kalida moved to 2-2-2 on
the season, while Jefferson
is 7-0-1.
We told the girls we
wanted to make it difficult
on them, Jefferson coach

Joshiah Stober said. We

didnt want them getting any
clean shots. I thought we did
that tonight where we just
put pressure on them. They
outshot us tonight (17-4), but
we wanted to be more physical on them and I thought the
second half we really made it
tough on them. No shot was
clean and we just had to win
those 50-50 balls.
Offensively Kalida controlled the opening half as
much of the action was on
their end of the field. But
with Jefferson forcing their
forwards to dribble the ball
upfield that allowed Wildcat
goalie Jessica Pimpas to get
in position for easy saves or
watch shots sail wide or high
of the goal frame.
And although much of
the opening half was played
on Kalidas end of the pitch,
Jefferson was able to make
some runs on the Ladycat
goal.
Jefferson junior midfielder
Arianna Knebel actually had
the first shot of the match as
she chased down a loose ball
on the left side, near the corner, and dribble towards the
goal. Her shot from the leftside hit the outside of the left
post and bounced out of play.
Jefferson had just one other
shot before they scored with
18:09 left in the first half.
Jefferson took a 1-0 lead
after a Wildcat defender

cleared the ball towards midfield where Knebel picked it

up and sent a pass ahead for
McConnahea. The pass was
well in front of McConnahea
and Kalida goalie Morgan
Knapke came out to play the
ball. Knapke was unable to get
the ball before McConnahea
did and once she dribbled
past the Ladycat keeper she
had a wide open look on goal
and calmly deposited it in the
back of the net.
After the score, it only
took Kalida 90 seconds to
even the score. After not
having been able to get a
shot past Pimpas on their
first three shot attempts, the
Ladycats Makenna Richey
and Brittany Kahle teamed
up for a goal with 16:37 left
in the half.
Kahle had dribbled the
ball up the right side of the
field and sent a crossing pass
to Richey in the middle of Jeffersons Danielle Harman battles at the net against
the field, near the top of the Columbus Groves Paige Bellman Thursday in NWC volbox. Richey quickly settled leyball at The Dog Pound. (DHI Media/Larry Heiing)

shot towards the right side of
the goal and into the net to tie

DELPHOS The St. Johns girls
soccer crew was seeking its first Western
Ohio Soccer League victory in eight
tries when Anna came to the St. Johns
Annex on a brilliant Thursday afternoon.
Though the Lady Blue Jays scored
the first goal of the afternoon about a

third of the way through the first half,

they couldnt maintain that momentum
and the Lady Rockets rallied for a 3-1
victory.
We had them on their heels for a
while. We got the first goal and that was
good to see, St. Johns coach Adam
Smith explained. Were seeing steady
improvement as we go, plus the effort
was there all match long. I have always
told the girls that if they give their all
and we lose 2-1 or 3-1 like today, we can
live with that. Were close and getting
closer.
The teams played on relatively even
terms the first 14-plus minutes, with the
keepers maintaining a scoreless draw as
the visitors (6-1-0, 1-1-0 WOSL) had
four shots on-goal and the hosts (3-5-0,
0-2-0) three.
That is, until the 25:31 mark of the
opening half. On a run down the right
side, senior Erin Williams floated a
20-yarder from the right side that eluded
Anna netminder Kristin Grimes (3 saves
versus 4 shots on-goal) and went high
side left for a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold,
the Anna defense pitched a shutout the
rest of the way as they didnt yield
another shot on-goal and limited the
Jays forays in the offensive end.
Anna began to build its attack and
nearly tied it at 23:35. On a scramble
in front of the net, St. Johns keeper Kristina Koester (14 saves vs. 17
shots on-goal) deflected a 14-yarder by
Annas Sara Kettler and scrambled to
finally get control.
Koester made another save at
20:20 on a deflected 8-yarder by Rylie
Edwards.

powerhouses in the Midwest

The only thing the Lady

effort and attitude.
According to head coach

only had that for the third set
Thursday in a 25-13, 25-8,
25-21 sweep at the hands
of once-beaten Coldwater
inside Robert A. Arnzen

Coldwater is a great team
and we simply didnt have
the mentality the first two
sets we needed to be competitive right off the bat,
Dammeyer explained. We
had a lot of unforced errors
and didnt have very good
serve-receive. Its easy to be
intimidated against the great
teams we play regularly in
the best league in the entire
state by far. Its as much a
mental battle as it is physical

Big Green boys down LCC Continuing DSA Teams

Ottovilles Brendon Siefker tries to dribble the ball versus

Ottoville. (DHI Media/Jim Metcalfe)

OTTOVILLE The
game of soccer is very much
touch, skill and athleticism.
At the same time, it also
requires hard work, effort and
energy.
Whatever Ottoville boys
soccer coach Eric Gerker
told his Big Green at halftime got them clicking and
sent them to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Lima
Central Catholic on a brilliant
Wednesday afternoon/evening at Bob Kaple Memorial
Stadium.
We just started to move
more and quicker. Our goal
is to come out quickly at the
start of both halves and we
did the first half, Gerker
explained. We played with
better pace of play and control of play, plus simply with
more effort. We didnt really
adjust anything strategically
but simply picked up the pace
of our play. Once we got
off quickly, things started to
come for us.
For LCC head man Garry
Tabler, he was pleased with
his teams effort.
At this point, its not
about wins and losses for us;

Draw

its about constant improvement. We start six freshmen

and sophomores and were
learning on the go against
some very good competition,
Tabler added. Ottoville simply got more bodies in the
middle the second half and
we couldnt counter that.
Even in a loss, Im happy
with how my guys played.
After a scoreless first half,
the Big Green (6-3) came
out a different team and controlled the orb.
They
outshot
the
Thunderbirds 12-2 (6-2
on-goal) in the second half.
Evan Boeckers 7-yard
header at 35:33 was the
Green and Golds first effort
in the half and was gobbled
up LCC goalkeeper Kyle
Smith (10 saves vs. 12 shots
on-goal total).
Their next try was on
the spot. At 35:01, Connor
Kuhlman, near the left sideline, found Jared Fanning
inside the left post and his
12-yarder found the net for a
1-0 edge.
At the 33:19 mark, the
home team made it 2-0. On
a pass out of the center by
Bocker, he found Fanning on
the right wing. The senior
took a couple of dribbles and
his 15-yard laser found the

When you get opportunities. you have

to seize them because you never know how
many you are going to get. They capitalized
on theirs and we didnt capitalize on ours.
Both teams missed a couple of quality
scoring chances in the second half as the
match appeared headed for a draw. Jefferson
saw a shot off a corner kick sail wide and
Knapke later grabbed a close range shot from
McConnahea.
Forty seconds after McConnahea saw
a shot attempt denied, she went back at
the Kalida goalie one-on-one. This time the
Jefferson freshman came out the winner as
she was able to push her shot attempt past the
Kalida keeper for a 2-1 Jefferson lead with
11:02 left to play.
Unfortunately for Jefferson the lead lasted
only 18 seconds as Richey scored her second
goal of the contest. Once again it was Kahle
that fed Richey with a pass in the middle of
the field, about 40 yards out. Richey dribbled
the ball for a step or two, then lofted a high

I dont now what happened the second half and earlier. We simply lost mental
focus, Smith added. Anna
is a good team and we do get
tired. With three matches in a
week like this week its
hard to condition because you
worry about keeping their legs
fresh, but we dont do enough;
thats on me.
Both units return to the
pitch 11 a.m. today: St. Johns

left side.
The hosts had a nice
chance at 31:20 as Kuhlman
had a try from the doorstep
of the left post but couldnt
quite get in on-frame.
The Thunderbirds (3-5)
had an effort with 19:20 to
go as Jimmy Kutka pushed
a shot on-goal from the right
side but Ottoville keeper
Dustin Trenkamp (8 saves vs.
9 shots on-goal) deflected it
out of bounds.
With 9:50 remaining,
Ottovilles Boecker blasted a
20-yarder from the left wing
but Smith knocked it away.
The hosts had two more
tries for a goal the remainder
of the match: at 7:06, when
Drew Williams rocketed a
25-yarder but was denied;
and at 53.5 ticks, when Rudy
Wenzlicks long shot was
stopped.
The T-Birds also had two
more tries.
The first was at 6:50 on
a mad scramble in front of
the Ottoville net and Stephen
Taflinger had a try with the
keeper down but defender
Josh Sarka kicked the ball out
of the goal mouth.
The second was at 2:26
when the Big Green was
whistled for a tackle in the
box on Taflinger, accounting
for a penalty kick. Taflinger
had the honors and he went
hard left for a 2-1 score.
The first half was fought
on relatively even terms, with
both teams having six shots
on-goal but none being able
to find the back of the net
as the keepers both had six
stops.
We just had very porous
play the first half, Gerker
added. We were standing around and not moving;
we were going through the
motions. We have a lot of
young players and I am trying to teach them about pace
of play and control. With so
many youngsters, there are
times when we have play like
that until they find consistency. We just have to keep practicing and working on those
things to play like I want on a
consistent basis.

shot at the Jefferson goal. Pimpas got a hand

on it but not enough to tie the score at 2-2.
Delphos Jefferson has come a long way
the last couple of years, Kehres added. We
were hoping to give them their first loss
tonight and they are still undefeated. The girls
played well. When Delphos scored we were
able to get that equalizer. It was a very good
game. Its one of those things; this is only our
sixth game of the year and a lot of teams have
10-11 games in. We are battled tested form
our first two games and we saw some things
we need to work on, but no one is perfect and
it comes down to how you minimize those
mistakes.
It was a physical game and Kalida is a
very good program, Stober said. We knew
coming in we havent had much success with
Kalida and it was going to be a fight until the
end. I give credit to my girls, I was proud of
the effort. They played hard. We got up on
them twice and we were unable to keep it.
Coming out of Kalida, on their field, with a
2-2 draw, is usually a good night.

MAC

(Continued from page 7)

The Cavaliers slowly battled back and tied it at 17 on

a Blue Jay miscue. The Jays
had one last stand, taking
a 21-18 on a hitting error
before a killer service error
gave the serve back to the
Cavaliers Danielle Welsch.
Her ace got them going and
when Schwietermans stuff
couldnt be returned by the
Blue and Gold on match
point, the sweep was complete.
I just told the girls when
they went out for the third set

they responded, Dammeyer

Mustangs tame Lancers in

NWC

The Bulldogs came out

strong in the third set with
a pair of Bellman bombs off
an assist by Rylee Sybert.
Unforced errors by Grove
gave the lead back to Delphos
along with an ace by Carder.
Rene Schroder landed an ace
plus a pair of slams to put the
Bulldogs back in the lead. A
long volley featuring amazing
saves by Kimmett and Claire
Thompson (15 assists, 5 digs)
eventually gave Jefferson a
well-deserved point. After
kills by Vorhess and Bellman
for Grove, Jefferson showed
its firepower with back-toback slams by Wallace and
another by Carder. A tie at

23 marked the 10th deadlock

of the set as Jefferson pulled
ahead on a tip by Wallace.
Vorhess evened the set with
a slam before the Wildcats
pulled out the win with a tip
by Thompson.
Round 4 of the fight
featured Delphos opening
a 6-3 lead before a kill by
Vorhess and a Schroeder ace
moved Grove closer. Both
teams displayed great hustle
on the floor as Thompson
for Jefferson and Groves
Danielle Pothoff saved volleys by their team with superior digs. The Bulldogs managed to gain a 3-point lead
before Jefferson came back
to tie on a kill by Harman.
After a Grove timeout, the

Bulldogs took the lead by 2

but Jefferson came right back
to take the lead 21-20 on
three straight points as Grove
called its second timeout
of the set. Like they did all
night, Grove came out of the
huddle and scored quickly to
take the lead 22-21. An error
by Grove evened the score
before Bellman took control
with a pair of kills and the
Bulldogs won the match 3-1.
Grove won the junior varsity match in two sets.
Grove is in the O.I.O.
Invitational at Bath High
School 10 a.m. today.
Jefferson returns to the
court hosting Crestview 5:30
p.m. Tuesday.

Good Friends are a Blessing

Developing friendships requires patience and nurturing. Its true that the
old saying, a friend in need is a friend indeed is quite appropriate. A good
friend is considerate of your feelings and problems, and they are there for
you when you need help. An act of kindness and friendship may be as simple
as visiting someone when they are ill, driving someone to an appointment,
or just visiting and spending time with someone. The Bible tells us that we
should not forsake our friends and that a friend loves at all times. Christ has
always been our supreme friend. He told us that He would never leave us or
forsake us. He has been our friend and helper more than we will ever know.
When Christ died on the cross for our sins, He demonstrated the ultimate
act of love for us. Although we may not be asked to give up our lives for our
friends, our Lords example of love and compassion should be reflected in our
daily lives. At times, everyone needs support and help, and sharing Gods love
with others reflects the love that God has for us.

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

League Is Uncertain
To be or not to be. That is
the question with regard to the
0-1-league this year. The matter was
considered at a meeting of Delphos
baseball players which was held at

the Eagles club rooms, Wednesday

night. The Delphos team is ready
to enter the league if it is formed.
Several other towns have expressed
their willingness.
If the league is not formed, the
Delphos team will play independent baseball and practically all
the games will likely be played at
home.
The players being considered
for membership are: Glenn Ditto,
Walter Remlinger, Lenard Swick,
Fay Meekins, Albert Haggeman,
W.C. Ladd, Arnold Potts, James

Boyer to Paul Coburn was completed and

brought the Bearcats to a 12-6 score.

Dodge City, Kansas

Survivors of the 29 white persons who fought 900 Indians at the
Battle of Adobe Walls in the Texas
Panhandle are planning a reunion
at the scene of the battle on its 55th
anniversary, June 27.
The participants, 28 men and
Mrs. William Olds, Warsaw, Mo.,
wife of one of the hunters, were all
from Dodge City at the time.
The traders and hunters had
made their camp at the ruins of
three large adobe houses. On the
morning of June 27, 1874, one of
the hunters, repairing the roof, saw
the horse back army of Araphoes,
Comanches, Cheyennes, and
Kiowas approaching for attack.
Warned in time, the little camp
defended itself for 17 days. On
July 14, a rescue party of 100 men
from Dodge City, 175 miles distant,
drove off the Indians. The camp lost
five including Olds, who was slain
at his wifes feet. The Indians left
30 dead.

Opinion

Good, good,
good vibrations

I just have good feeling about Canal Days

this year.
Ive been excited for weeks. The Toast
went great on Thursday. More than 500 people
gathered to toast the community we live in
and hear news about the Canal Commission
Museum and the Miami-Erie Canal itself.
There are so many new events and the
old favorites to enjoy at Canal Days I cant
imagine anyone not finding something to their
liking. The committee has worked hard to
make this years celebration a memorable one.
There are tethered balloon rides and
Today is the first full day of the 58th celebration but let me tell you, if you didnt make
it uptown last evening, youve already missed
a lot.
The ninth Battle of the Business was a
contest to the death. Nineteen local businesses entered teams who fought fiercely for
the trophy. Congrats to the Lakeview Farms
Team #1 for their win. The traveling trophy
will be, Im sure, prominently displayed at
the business. Theres plenty of space on that
thing; your team could be etched on it next
year. Start training now. The more the messier,
er merrier.
Todays schedule is packed with activities
for all ages, including a pancake and sausage
breakfast, bingo, the Little Miss and Junior
Miss Canal Days Pageant, the art show, a bake
sale, waterball contest, kiddie tractor pull,
tractor show, vendor market, a cruise-in and
car show and more.
Young artists will fill the sidewalks with
chalk drawings and anglers will vie for the top
prizes in the fishing derby. Pets of all kinds,

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand
shapes and sizes will strut their stuff during
the Pet Parade.
The highlight of the evening will be Venyx
in the Entertainment Tent. They are a definite
crowd pleaser.
The 5-K walk/run, cheerleading contest
and the parade will be held on Sunday and
local band Dueces Wild will close the weekend in the Entertainment Tent. The big ticket
winner will be announced at 6 p.m.
Canal Days is a lot more than what you can
do. Its also about who you see. Its great to
find old friends and reminisce while enjoying
a carnival atmosphere. The success of the
festival has been drawing people who have
moved away from home for several years
now. New friends are also a possibility.
However it turns out, supporting Canal
Days is supporting your community. Proceeds
have improved the downtown and helped our
local police and fire departments, just to name
a few of the benefactors. They have doled out
more than $400,000 in a little over 10 years.
The weather is also going to be perfect. Not
too hot, not cool. Grab the family and head
uptown. Its all waiting for you.

Ohioans shouldnt have to choose

between their health and their jobs
BY U.S. SENATOR
SHERROD BROWN
Last week we celebrated Labor Day, and
we welcomed an important step forward for
American workers, with
the Presidents announcement that federal contractors will be required to
provide up to seven days
in paid sick leave.
This is wonderful
news for some 300,000
Americansbut it doesnt
go nearly far enough.
Millions of private-sector
workers including 45
percent of the Ohio workforce are still left unprotected.
These workers face
agonizing dilemmas.
Do they send a sick
child to school, knowing
theyre risking the health
of their child and infecting
other children, or do they
jeopardize their job by taking a day off? Do they
go into work with the flu,
risking their own health
and that of their coworkers, or do they stay home
and lose a paycheck?

Brown
This is a choice too
many families still face.
Ohioans should not have
to choose between a paycheck and their health, or
the health of a child.
Thats why this spring
I helped introduce the
Healthy Families Act,
which would guarantee
paid sick and family leave
for all Americans.
My bill would allow
all workers to earn up to
seven days per year in paid
sick time. This is a public health issue. We know
that adults without paid

Do you have a redneck relative?

If laughter is therapy, then maybe
a few doses of Redneck Humor
inspired by Atlanta-based comedian
Jeff Foxworthy will help divert our
attention from the angst caused by
the political campaign exploits of
Donald Trump, the tragedies of the
migrant and refugee crisis, global
warming, cyber hacking and wondering if its too early to shop for
Christmas gifts.
Foxworthy defines a redneck as
a person with a glorious absence
of sophistication. He has sold millions of comedy books and CDs
titled You Might Be a Redneck If.
His jokes arent meant to offend
anyone. Were not laughing at people, he says, were laughing with
them.
He further defines sophisticated people as those who invest in
stocks and bonds. Rednecks invest
their money in commemorative
plates. Sophisticated people have
retirement plans. Rednecks play the
lottery. When Foxworthy told his
parents he was leaving his job as
an IBM engineer to be a comedian
they just sat around the dining room

table saying, We can get you help.

The following redneck jokes are
taken from several newspaper clips
Ive collected over the last 20 years.
If you want more, you can find them
in books, on CDs and a series of
videos. They are also online.
Foxworthy says he once took
his southern family on a Hawaiian
vacation. They used coolers and
grocery bags for luggage. His cousin has a complete set of salad bowls
and they all say Cool Whip on the
side. County records support the
premise that most rednecks are born
about nine months after a family
reunion!
You might be a redneck if an
episode of Justified changed your
life. You might be a redneck if your
wife ever asked you to come in here
and move this transmission so I can
take a bath. You might be a redneck
if you think fast food is hitting a
deer at 65 mph.
Rednecks can be a Packer fan.
You might be a redneck if youve
ever sat in 10-degree weather with
a big piece of foam cheese on your
head. You could be a redneck if the

Crow off

Tis the season of

which I find myself
becoming increasingly
fond. September is kind of
a bittersweet month, with
cooler nights and cooling
days and colors are changing as they should. The
deep greens of summer
are tinted with paler hues
of the same as well as
yellows. One maple I see
each morning is already
shifting to rose and scarlet.
Its warm enough that
the goats still sprawl
about the lawn by day but
cool enough that they forage by night. The chickens kick dust bowls to
keep the last of the warm
weather deerflies.
A few weeks back,
Board of Election member
Tony Wobler and I started talking about chickens
after a morning meeting.
This years brood resulted
in one rooster too many,
he said, with one in particular too nice for his own
good. For two weeks now,
that same rooster has been

signs of promise, luxuriant enough that, by snowfall, Mr. Woblers namesake will have tail feathers thick enough to rival

Just as Freckles and
Antonio seemed to have

You might be a redneck if your
brother-in-law is also your uncle.
Or, if your dog and your wallet are
both on a chain. Maybe you have
curtains in your pickup but not
in the house. Youre a redneck if
theres a stuffed possum on display
in your living room. A redneck
always looks forward to the next
family reunion because its a good
place to meet girls.
You might be a redneck if your
front porch collapses and the failing
debris kills six or more dogs. You
might be a redneck if the primary
color of your car is gray primer.
You are a redneck if you use an
old T-shirt rag for a gas cap on the
pickup truck.
You can claim to be a redneck if,
in your wedding picture, you have
a toothpick in your mouth. You
are a redneck if you have a diploma from a truck-driving school.
You might be a redneck if you

worked out a truce, with

diminutive Freckles leading the pecking order,
in walked Chicken Joe.
The latter showed up one
afternoon, we suspect
with human help, in the
company of Chicken Jane.
Chicken Joe is big bruiser
of a red rooster, with a
deep bass voice in contrast with Freckles strident tenor. But a case of
bumble foot, a deformity that develops when a
bird is housed without the
opportunity to perch, is
keeping gentle Joe in his
place, beneath the pines
and well out of Freckles
harem.
The kicker for all three
of the boys is that the hens
are 21st century women,
with bird brains of their
own. They pay no heed
to the squabbling trio and
chase crickets and grasshoppers wherever they
very well please until sunset sends them bustling
under roof for the dewy
night.

sick days are one and a

half times more likely than
adults with paid sick days
to report going to work
with a contagious illness,
according to the National
Partnership for Women &
Families.
This plan would not
only be good for workersit would also be good
for businesses. Providing
sick days decreases turnover, and gives employers
safer, more stable workplaces and healthier, more
productive employees.
And most importantly, paid sick leave would
increase economic security
for millions of families.
Parents would no longer
be forced to risk their jobs
to take care of sick children, and would have the
peace of mind that one
illness would not result in
a lost paycheck.
Ohioans work hard
to support their families.
They often work long
hours, for wages that have
not gone up fast enough.
We owe it to our workers to give them a day to
recover when they sick.

Byron McNutt

People Make
the Difference

You are definitely a redneck if

you have at least five unmarried
sisters who have double first names
like Jenny Mae or Kathy Sue.
Typically, a rednecks pickup truck
has a smashed headlight, no windshield wipers and different colored
doors and fenders.
For a true redneck, an abode is
an eight-foot wooden plank. You are
a redneck if the last time you can
remember a really big laugh is when
a neighbor broke a leg chasing a
wild pig. You are a redneck if you
barbecue Spam on the grill.
You might be a redneck if you
have been fired from a construction
job because of your appearance.
Youre a redneck if you need one
more hole punched in your card
to get a freebie at the House of
Tattoos. Youre a redneck if you
have a Hefty bag on the passenger
side window of your car.
You might be a redneck if you
see no reason to stop at a rest stop
if you have an empty milk jug or
beer bottle in the car. You are a redneck if your kids are going hungry
tonight because you just had to have

the Yosemite Sam mud flaps.

You are a redneck if your richest
relative buys a new home and you
have to help take off the wheels.
Youre a redneck if you honestly
believe women are turned on by
guttural animal noises and armpit
melodies. Youre a refined redneck
if youve ever hollered rock the
house, Bubba, during a piano recital.
Your family is especially proud
to prominently display a gift you
bought at Graceland. Youre a redneck if you and your wife have
worn matching tube tops to a wedding. You are a redneck gourmet if
you think beef jerky and moon pie
are two of the important daily food
groups.
You are probably a redneck if
your mother has been arrested for
starting a fist fight at a high school
athletic event. You might be a redneck if your dog had a litter of pups
on the living room floor and no one
in the family noticed.
You are a redneck if your girl

Raid
(Continued from page 1)
As police officials were
entering the home, they
encountered two large breed
dogs that were very aggressive. Officers were forced
to shoot both dogs. Both
dogs died as a result of this.
The Van Wert County Dog
Wardens Office responded
to the scene to assist.
Once police officials
entered the home, they
found it to contain living
conditions not suitable for
the juveniles who lived
there. Due to this, police
contacted Van Wert County
Childrens Services and
requested a caseworker

come to the scene. The caseworker opened an investigation into the highly-unsanitary living conditions
and suspected drug activity
occurring within the home.
The West Central Ohio
Crime Task Force is comprised of officers from
the following agencies:
Allen County Sheriffs
Office, Van Wert County
Sheriff s Office, Lima
Police
Department,
Shawnee Township Police
Department, Delphos Police
Department and multiple
state/ federal agencies. This
task force operates within a
multi-county area to combat
drugs and major crimes.

Within that one option,

moving the stations presence
to the VHF spectrum, there
are two alternatives: setting up
shop in the low end channels 2 through 6 or the high
end channels 7 through 13.
The difference between the
two is significant. Under FCC
regulations, a move to the low
end of the VHF spectrum costs
a participating broadcaster 40
percent of the final auction
price. A move to the high end,
a position considered at a premium within broadcasting circles, increases the cost to 75
percent of the auction price.
While expressing his personal opinion that a move to
the lower end is preferable,
Kielmeyer said that participation in the sale isnt limited to
just the one possibility.
We can enter under more
than one option, he said.

What we can say to the FCC

is we want to participate; our
first choice is low VHF, but
wed also consider high VHF.
If for some reason we accept a
bid number and then the FCC
says theres no bid channel
available, we can go to high
VHF.
Whatever the universitys form of participation,
the effects of the sale likely
wont be felt for quite some
time. Representatives of
both WGTE Public Media in
Toledo and WFWA PBS39
in Fort Wayne remarked that
the process of the reconfiguring the UHF spectrum and
reblocking stations could take
as long as two years.
On the subject of both
WGTE and WFWA, neither
of their respective boards have
announced a decision as to
whether they will or wont
participate in the auction.

DELPHOS John
Wolfer will bring the piece
Canal Days, part of a
series of multi-dimensional
artwork based on Cabinets
of Curiosity, to the Delphos
Canal Commission for Canal
Days this weekend.
This piece began as a
bucket of bones given to me
by Lou Hohman. He knew
that I had a fondness for most
things skeletal and being the
son of a butcher, the cow
bones would hold particular interest to me, Wolfer
said. When going through
the bones, a pattern quickly
arose. I was interested in both
the fact that they were thrown
in the canal long ago and that
they also seemed to represent
the fate of the canal itself.
Wolfer is a professor of art at the University
of Cincinnati - Blue Ash
College. He received his
masters in fine art in painting from Clemson University,
South Carolina. His two- and
three-dimensional artwork
has been featured in group
and solo exhibitions across
the country, from New York
City to Missoula, Montana.
His work investigates stories,
legends and myths and their
relationship to personal and
cultural history.
Wolfer will be on hand
on Saturday at the Canal
Commission Museum to
explain his work and answer Canal Days, the work of artist John Wolfer, is on display at the Delphos Canal Museum
questions.
this weekend. The artist will be at the museum today. (DHI Media/Nancy Spencer)

just moved to its current location from the former Palace

Her husband was the grand marshal in 2002, a year

Lehman is proud to serve as this years parade leader
and hopes everyone comes to Delphos this weekend.
Its good to have people come here and see what we
have to offer, Lehmann said. I am very thankful for all
the community has done to keep Delphos a great place to
