4 Pipes
4.1 Materials and manufacture
Pipes shall be made ftom suitable clays and fued to
vitrfication. The clays shall be of such a qual.ity and
homogeneitytlat the final product is in accorilance
with this staudard. Pipes shall be sounil and ftee
ftom such defects as would inpair their function
when il service.
Visual defect, such as missilg glaze, unevenness

the durability, jacking requirements and flow
characteristics of the pipes are unafrected.
Pipes may be urglazed or glazetl on t,hei.oterior aod-/
or extedor. When glazetl they need not be glazeil on
the joiatir:g surfaces.
Pipes are classified as rigid (stiff).
Pipes may be surface treated after firing.

Annex A (normative)
Compressive strength
A.1 Test rnethods
L.l.l Testing machine
A compressivetesting machine shall be usecl,
equipped with a means ofproviding the rate of
load.ingspecifiedh A.1.4 and with a pacirg device.
The capaciw of the machiae shall be such that the
expectd ultimate load on a specinen is greater
than one-fifth ofthe machine scalerange. The
testing machiae loail ghall be verified by calibration
to an accuracy of 1 % by an apppoveclagelcy at
iltervals of not more thaa 12 months.
The machi.ne shall be equippecl with two pernaneut
ferrous bearing platene which shall lre at least a6
large as any plywood packi.ng or, where such
packing is not beiag used" the bedding faces ofthe
specimenbeing tested.
The upper machine platen shall be able to align
teely with the specimens as contsct is made but the
plateas sball be restrained by fiction or other
means iom tiltirg with respect to each other clurirg
loading.
The lower compressionplaten shall be a plain, oon
tilting bearing block.
The testing face of the platens shall be hardened
and shall have a flatness toleranc of* 0,05 mm.
The machiae shall be substantial and rigid
throughout, so that the distribution of the load will
not be afrected by the deformati.on or yieldi-ug of auy
Part.
A.1.2 Preparatian of epecimens
Specimeasshall be prepareclaccordiagto one ofthe
followiag procedures.

a) As cubes and with mi:rimum length of side

of 14 mm cut from the pipe wall with the opposirg
faces which are to be i! contact with the platens
ofthe testi.ng machi-ue grounil parallel and plane
to a toleraoce of* 0,50 mm.
b) As cylinders, cut parallel to the longitudiral
axis of the pipe. They shall have a minimum
diameter of 14 mm and their length shall be
between l and 1,5 times the diameter. They shall
have flat top anil bottom faceswhich are to be in
contact with the platens ofthe testing machine,
ground parallel andplane to a toleranceof+ 0,50
mm.

o RsI 09-1999

c) As sectorsofthe pipe wall, cut parallel to the

loagiturli.ual axis ofthe pipe- The tbickness shall
be that of the pipe wall and the width measured
around the outr cicumference ofthe pipe shall
be approxinately the same as the wall thickness.
The length shall be between 1 and 1,5 times the
thickness. They shall have flat top and bottom
faces which are to be iD contact with the platns
of the testiag machiae, Sround parallel and plane
to a toleraDceof+ 0,50 mmSamples shall be pre-contlitionedin water as
deecribedin 4.1.1of EN 295-3:1991.
The manufacturer shall decide on the shape of the
sample, either a),.b) or c) ae given above.
A-1.3 Teat pmcedure
Wipe clean the bearing surfaces of all the platens
anil remove any loose grit or other material from the
surfaces of the specimen which are to be in contact
with the platens.
To ensure a uniform bearilg for the specimeu, place
it between plywood sheets to take up irregularities'
The plywood shali be tbree-ply, nomiually 4 nm
thick, ofEuropeau birch or softwood ancl ftee ftom
knots. Ensure that the plywood exceedsthe
specimensize ilimensions by 5 mn to 15 mm. Use a
ftesh pair ofpl1'wood sheetsfor each tst.
Place the epecimen centrally uocler the loadiag
point of the upper platen ir such a way that the
applied load compresses it in a clirection parallel to
the longitudinal axis ofthe pipe.
.!-L.4 laading
Apply the Ioarl without shocL ancl increase it at a
cou.renientrate not exceeding35,0 N rom-2 -in-r
up to half the aaticipated maxinum load.
Thereafter smoothly changethe rate of loading
to 15,0 N nm-2 uin-l aud maintain tbis rate uotil
failure, i.e. when the indicator neeille falls back io
spite ofprogtessively adjustilg the machine
controls or the specimen undergoesexplosive
collapse.
NOTE A higher rat of loadhg up to half the m3rimum Ioad
reduces the time for testing the specimen and mav be used
becaus th rate oiloading during this 6tage does not influenc
the ultimat 6treDth.

Record the maximum load (ia newtons) carried by

the specimen clurirg the test.
From the maximum load carried by the test
specimeu ald the area of the specimen i! contact
v,rith the pb'wooil facings, the compressive strength
ofthe speciuea is calculated in uewtons per square
milljmetre. The contact area is deternined as the
measurerl mean of the two opposing faces.
A.2 Calculation of compressive and jacking
strength

1l

EN 295-7:1995

The compressive strength of the clay body shall be

calculatedftom the meau compressivestreDgthofat
Ieast 10 specimenscut ftom the same pipe,
The miaimum compressive strength is calculated by
deducting 2 times the stauilard deviation of ttre
sample from the mean value.
The milliDum annular area i.n square millimetres
through which the jackiag forces act is calculated.
This may be locatecl at the base of any gtoove
holdiag the joint sealing ring or at the packing ring.
'Itie area isr/4 (d.^2- diz) where d, is the minimum
outside diameter and di id the maximum iuterDal
diameter at the minimum cross sectio[.
The jackirg strength of the pipe shall theu be
calculated i|l kilonewt4ns by multiplyiDe the
nirimum compressive strength calculated in
neEtons per squars millimstrs !y 1[s minimum
annular area and iliviili.ng by 10r.
A.3 Retest
Ifthe minimum compressivestrength of a sample
fails to comply with the requienent of 4.8.2 the
