Lightning Protection

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Lightning Protection required?
According to RoSPA over 300,000 lightning strikes hit the UK every year. These strikes pose a
significant risk to properties and individuals as a result of the initial strikes and subsequent
electrical surges, as well as potential after effects such as fire and loss of power.

What are the regulations?

BS EN 62305 - Protection against lightning
BS EN 62305-1:2011 (Part 1 - General principles)
This part of the standard provides general guidelines that should be followed to protect persons
and structures including their installations and contents from lightning, and serves as an
introduction to the further parts of the standard, outlined below:
BS EN 62305-2:2012 (Part 2 - Risk management)
BS EN 62305-3:2011 (Part 3 - Physical damage to structures and life hazard)
BS EN 62305-4:2011 (Part 4 - Electrical and electronic systems within structures)

What level of protection do I require?

Under BS EN 62305, a unique risk assessment of your property or properties will determine the
level and scope of protection required. Specifically, four separate risks are considered:
R1 risk of loss of human life
R2 risk of loss of services to the public

R3 risk of loss of cultural heritage

R4 risk of loss of economic value

The standard also provides procedures for calculating the risk of lightning striking a building and
advise that if the risk factor should exceed 1 in 100,000, protection is required.

How often are Lightning Protection services required?

In accordance with BS EN 62305 systems should be tested annually. To account for seasonal
variations, intervals of 11 or 13 months are generally accepted. These systems must have also
been installed in accordance with this standard and risk assessment recommendations.

Is surge protection also a requirement?

Surge protection may be required to protect sensitive electrical and electronic equipment against
potentially dangerous transient over-voltages, minimising the risk to life, property and data.

Who can undertake Lightning Protection services?

A suitably competent person is required to carry out these services. Membership to industry
bodies and relevant experience will help to determine the level of competence.

What are the benefits of Lightning Protection?

Complying with these requirements and undertaking regular testing and maintenance will help to
prolong the effective life of your system and ensure that when it is called-upon to protect your
people and assets, it is in a suitable condition to do so.
