SPRING MOUNTS BACKGROUND

VMC offers a broad range of spring isolation mountings

and hangers that will limit the transmission of vibration,
impact and noise over a variety of applications from
engine gensets and small fans to heavy duty HVAC
equipment and industrial machinery. Vibration and instability can shorten the life of any equipment, as well as
cause unsuitable noise disturbances. The VMC springbased products are designed to diminish these factors.
The heart of the VMC spring mounts and hangers are the actual spring coils. The
spring coils are designed for low operating stresses and excellent lateral stability
ensuring long-life both for the springs and the isolated equipment. VMC spring coils
are made of different metals depending on the application requirements. Oil-tempered high carbon steel is standard for most springs. However, softer springs made
of stainless steel are available for lighter applications.
To further long-life and durability, most
VMC springs have a powder-coated finish.
This finish is offered in numerous colors for
easy identification in the factory and in the
field. Powder-coated finishes have replaced
liquid or painted finishes for a variety of reasons. Liquid finishes can have sags, runs,
drips, bubbles, and offer an overall poor
finish. Powder-coated finishes are smooth,
uniform and durable providing a superior,
long-lasting finish.
VMC offers some spring mounts with minimal added structures. Examples are our
AC, ADC, and ADHC series. Simple, freefloating top caps and cup bases provide
attachment points and leveling adjustment.
Elastomer spring cups afford high frequency noise attenuation. Hanger boxes are
unique housings that give tension-loading capability to a compression spring. Other
VMC spring mounts nest the compression springs within engineered metal housings. These not only provide a means of attachment to the surrounding structures,
but also may provide restraint in a number of directions and damping.
This restraint and damping may or may not be field adjustable,
depending on isolator series and option.
The spring mount and housing, and therefore its series and options,
must be carefully selected for the mounts intended usage. VMC offers
cast iron for common usage, and high strength, all-welded steel for
high-load and critical applications. All coil springs, whether housed or
un-housed, restrain motion in the springs compressive direction.
Housings may add restraint in a perpendicular plane. Fully restrained
housings, such as for seismic and marine applications, further provide
restraint in the upward, tension direction. Depending on series and job
specifics, a number of housing finishes are available. These include
powder coat, paint and hot-dip zinc galvanize.
Our ongoing product development and improvement ensures that
every installation is correctly designed and accurately manufactured to
provide the maximum efficiency needed for any application.

DESIGN & APPLICATIONS

The purpose of a resilient mounting system is to provide flexibility in the form of a mounting system that
converts energy into a more manageable form. By providing deflection, the energy of the vibrating equipment
is released over a longer period. Theory shows that as
the operating speed of the equipment increases, the
required deflection to absorb this energy decreases.
For example, a heavy, sudden shock requires a higher
deflection than a constant running engine.
The amount of energy that passes through a mount is
measured as a percentage of the vibration energy produced by the equipment. This factor is called transmissibility. It is also possible to increase the energy through
the mounting system. For this increase, we use the
term amplification. Though, for most systems where
the energy is decreased, we use the term attenuation.
A properly designed isolation system will attenuate the
vibrations to a level necessary for the application.
To measure transmissibility we need to know the
deflection or natural frequency of the isolation system.
To calculate the natural frequency of the isolation system, when given the operating deflection in inches, we
use this equation:
Natural Frequency, (Hz) =

9.8
Deflection

Once we know the disturbing frequency (fd) and natural

frequencies (fn), we can now calculate the transmissibility. For isolation systems without damping the equation is:
Transmissibility (%) =

d
n

1
2

-1

In practicality, transmissibility is not the term commonly

used. We use the term isolation efficiency. This is the
transmissibility subtracted from 100%. For example, if
we have 20% transmissibility, we say we have 80%
isolation efficiency.
Isolation efficiency (%) =

100% - Transmissibility (%)

Generally, in most non-critical applications a minimum

isolation efficiency of 80% is acceptable. As the application gets more critical, a computer chip manufactur-

ing plant for example, isolation efficiencies in the high

90% range may be required. As the required isolation
efficiency increases, so does the cost and complexity
of the isolation system.

FOR THE DESIGNER

We need to have the operating speed of the equipment when selecting vibration isolation materials
and mounts. However, more information is required
to make the proper isolator selection when leafing
through this catalog. Additional information
required includes:

Equipment weight

Motor horsepower

Number of isolation points and weight distribution

at each point, if available

Installation location within the building

Is the equipment installed on grade or above, within the building?

Is the equipment suspended?

Is the equipment on the roof?

Generally, this is most of the information required. For

specialty applications that fall outside the realm of
these general categories, consult the VMC Engineering
Department for additional support.
Installations above grade within a structure must be
analyzed differently than those on a structural slab on
grade. It is generally assumed that a slab on grade is
infinitely rigid and cannot deflect. For the sake of vibration isolation, this is true. For installations above grade,
the stiffness of the structure may play a significant role
in selecting proper isolation. From the transmissibility
equation, it is seen that the ratio between the disturbing frequency and the natural frequency of the isolation
system is the driving factor. At the center of a mid-floor
slab, natural frequencies exist that are relatively close
to theoretical natural frequency for efficient isolation.
The concerns with this is that by adding an isolation
system on top of this slab at that frequency will create
a two mass and spring system which may create resonance between the two systems.

to aid the designer in this process. Typical choices are

open spring, captive mount, snubbed mount or seismic mount, for base mounted equipment. For suspended equipment, the choice for the designer
includes, boxed spring hangers that are offered with or
without elastomeric elements. These are also available
with a pre-positioning option, which limits the travel in
the system once it is filled.

FLOOR MOUNTED EQUIPMENT

For equipment installed on a structural slab, four
different application options exist. In each case,
other information is necessary to properly select the
isolation system.

As can be seen from the above sketch, the stiffness of

the slab is a part of the total system. We can quantify
its stiffness for illustration. Per current design guidelines, ASD & LRFD, a typical mid-point deflection in a
beam is L/360, where L is the length of the beam. For
a 20 beam span, the allowable deflection is 0.67.
This value falls within the range of required isolation for
our equipment. Therefore, it is very likely that amplification will occur if this system applies its vibratory force
at the center of the span.

1. Open Springs Use of an open spring in most

applications needs to be looked at cautiously due
to the lateral instability of the installation. If the
equipment being isolated has lateral service loads,
such as fan thrust, use of an open spring is not
recommended. Also, equipment with high startup
torque should not be isolated with open springs.
When the equipment has other means of lateral
support, say, a seismic snubber or two directional
horizontal thrust restraints, an open spring will suffice. Though, use of an open spring in combination
with an elastomeric break, will be the least intrusive
to the acoustical designer.
2. Captive and Housed Mounts Captive and
housed mounts are primarily open spring mounts
that are placed inside of a housing. The housing

Solving this problem requires additional displacement

in the selected isolation system. As we decrease the
natural frequency of the isolation system, we decouple
the natural frequency of the system from that of the
slab. Typically, a good value for deflection of the isolation system is about five to six times that of the structure, assuming we are still in the range of isolation efficiency. And by decreasing the natural frequency of the
isolation system, we increase the ratio of d /n, which
will create a more efficient system.
Now that the correct spring deflection and load capacity are selected, the applications engineer can now go
through the various options in selecting the proper
vibration isolator. VMC offers a wide variety of choices

offers lateral stability and provides a flat upper surface for the equipment to rest on. Most isolators
sold are of this variety. Captive mounts provide the
safety needed for most non-critical installations that
are subject to lateral operating loads and uplift. In
addition, they are offered with base plates for
anchoring to a structural slab.

designed and certified to carry prescribed seismic

forces. When selecting a seismic mount for a particular application, it is necessary to have a job
specification or know exactly where the job installation is located. VMCs engineering gladly offers all
the assistance necessary to properly design, select
and install seismic mounting systems. These
mounts, along with the Captive and Snubbed, also
offer the ability to use the mount to block the
equipment at a prescribed height prior to filling
the system.
It is important to note that seismic mounts are not
intended to protect the equipment from a seismic
event. Their purpose is to ensure the equipment
stays positively attached to the building structure.
It should also be added that all seismic mounts are
captive, but not all all captive mounts can be considered seismic rated.

3. Snubbed Mounts Mounts that have internal

snubbing that creates coloumb (or frictional) damping are considering snubbing mounts. Snubbing is
generally required for installations that have a high
degree of start-up torque and that frequently shut
down and restart. During the start-up of some
equipment, the motor will pass through a resonant
frequency, and having a damping device will prevent amplification.
4. Seismic Mounts The last level of laterally
restrained springs is seismic mounts. These
mounts are so called since they are designed to
withstand the applied lateral load from a seismic
event. These mounts are offered with provisions for
positively fastening to the equipment and to building structure. Their internal components have been

SPRING-FLEX MOUNTINGS
A Series Spring-Flex mountings are designed to isolate
low frequency vibrations in air handling units, fans,
chillers, and other HVAC equipment. The A Series are
recommended for use directly under most HVAC
equipment and in conjunction with structural steel
bases and concrete inertia blocks.
The A Series are freestanding spring mountings that
are laterally stable. The coils are designed with an
excellent ratio between the coil outer diameter and the
operating height ensuring lateral stability. In all the A
Series designs, this ratio is a minimum of 0.80 and
many have a 1:1 ratio. The coils are built to low operating stresses providing long mounting life.

The A Series also feature weldless construction. The

spring coils are not welded to steel plates that could
introduce excessive stress at the weld areas and
result in the failure of the springs. Instead, the A Series
are assembled to elastomeric cups or to steel plate
bases providing durability and flexibility. The series
also include a built-in leveling device for simplified
installation. The products incorporate a color-coded
steel spring for ease of identification and inspection in
the field.

SPRING-FLEX MOUNTINGS
B/C/D Series Spring-Flex mountings are extremely versatile vibration control isolators for use under engine
gensets, industrial machinery, pumps, compressors,
chillers, fans, and other HVAC equipment. The B/C/D
Series are offered in several standard versions that provide a wide range of installation options - internal or
external level adjustments, elastomeric snubbing for
side loads, steel or cast aluminum housings, and many
mounting choices.
The B/C/D Series feature telescoping housings with up
to 20 springs providing superior isolation capabilities
over a variety of applications. The series include
resilient inserts that act as upper and lower housing
guides and prevent metal-to-metal contact.
Replaceable elastomeric acoustical non-skid pads are
attached to the bottom of the housings.

The BP/CP/DP types offer a centrally located positioning pin and internal adjustments that permit installation
anywhere regardless of accessibility or the location of
bolt holes in the equipment. The BT/CT/DT types add
non-skid, ribbed elastomeric pads bonded to the top
and bottom of the housings for increased stability
under equipment that does not require bolting.
The housings are made of cast steel or welded steel
for optimum strength and durability. All hardware is
stainless steel or zinc-plated. Lightweight cast aluminum housings with electroplated hardware and
springs are available for applications where mounting
weights are a concern. The all-steel springs are colorcoded for easy identification and offer a powder-coated finish for improved corrosion resistance.

STEEL SPRING VIBRATION ISOLATORS

L Series steel spring isolators are extremely versatile
vibration control mountings generally used for engine
gensets and industrial machinery. The L Series is
offered in several standard versions that provide a wide
range of installation options internal or external level
adjustments, fully adjustable snubbing, high carbon
steel springs for heavy loads or softer springs for
lighter loads, and many mounting choices. Special
modifications, such as extra long bolts or extra mounting holes, are available as options.
The LI and LO types offer internal adjustment that permits installation anywhere regardless of accessibility or
the location of bolt holes in the machine base or concrete foundation. The standard adjustment bolt will
pass through a 2-inch machine leg. Longer bolts for
thicker legs are available. Fully adjustable snubbing is
by means of end nuts. Oil-resistant rubber is standard
for all sizes and styles of snubber inserts. LN and LO
types have non-adjustable inserts for alignment purposes, without any snubbing action, and can be converted for adjustability in the field.

The standard springs use oil-tempered high carbon

steel and softer springs are available for lighter loads.
All springs are color-coded for easy identification and
offer a powder-coated finish for improved corrosion
resistance. All housings are durable, gray cast iron per
ASTM A48 (except for H and J sizes). The H and J
housings are of welded steel construction to accommodate the heaviest load capacities in the L series.
L Series isolators are fastened to the floor by means of
a base plate with slotted bolt holes, bonded synthetic
rubber sound pads, and isolation washers. For fastening to a machine, a single bolt is standard on types LK
and LN isolators. A waffle-embossed, elastomeric
sound pad cemented to the top plate provides maximum sound damping and noise absorption on types LI
and LO. This sound pad offers a non-skid surface that
normally requires no bolting one tapped hole will be
furnished upon request. VMC will also provide additional tapped holes in the top plate as an option.
Protective coatings using enamel and electroplated
bolts and nuts are also standard.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Six housing sizes and several mounting options

with or without bolts provide superior versatility
over a wide range of applications.

Internal leveling adjustment permits installation anywhere regardless of accessibility or the location of
bolts in the machine base or foundation.

High carbon steel springs and bonded, synthetic

rubber sound pads reduce vibration, shock and
noise transmission.

Color-coded springs provide easy identification for

installation and inspection.

Durable, gray cast iron housings meet ASTM A48

standards, while welded steel construction is used
in the larger sizes.

A powder-coated finish on the springs and

electroplated bolts and nuts offer improved
corrosion resistance.

Accommodates wide range of loads.

STEEL SPRING VIBRATION ISOLATORS

S Series steel spring isolators are exceptionally versatile vibration control mountings for use with marine and
stationery diesel generators, large presses, hammers,
shaker screens, and pulverizing equipment. The S
Series is offered in several standard versions that provide a wide range of installation options including internal or external level adjustments, fully adjustable snubbing, and a variety of floor and equipment mounting
choices. Extra long bolts or extra mounting holes are
available as options.
The SI type offers internal adjustment that permits
installation anywhere regardless of accessibility or the
location of bolt holes in the machine base or foundation. The SK type offers external leveling via a single
adjusting bolt or in combination with two additional
connecting bolts. The standard adjustment bolt will
pass through a 2-inch machine leg. Longer bolts for
thicker legs are available. The SO type is non-leveling
for applications where leveling is not a concern.
S Series isolators offer fully adjustable snubbing by
means of the end nuts. Snubber inserts are made of

elastomer impregnated cotton duck for heavy duty

usage. The springs are oil-tempered, high carbon
steel. The housings are made of heavy duty, all-welded
steel construction as standard. All springs are colorcoded for easy identification and offer a powder-coated finish and zinc-plated hardware for superior corrosion resistance. Special steels or coating materials for
harsh chemical atmospheres are also available as
an option.
VMC S Series isolators are fastened to the floor by
means of a base plate, elastomer sound pads and isolation washers. For fastening to a machine, a single
bolt is standard on SK type isolators. Clearance holes
are standard for internal leveling on SI types. The customer may specify the number, size and location for
tapped holes.
Supplemental limit stops are recommended for marine,
mobile and other installations where overturning forces
may be encountered. If preferred, refer to the VMC
KMS Series isolator with integral, all-directional limit
stops for use in these applications. See page 224.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Load ranges from 100 to 22,900 lbs. provide flexibility over a wide range of heavy-duty applications.

SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
SH Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed to isolate
low frequency vibrations in suspended piping and
equipment preventing transmission of vibration to the
building structure through the piping systems. The
products incorporate a color-coded steel spring for
ease of identification in the field. Load ranges from 21
to 5000 lbs. and up to 5 of static deflection offer a
wide variety of choices to ensure proper support.
Spring-Flex hangers should be used for all suspended
piping in equipment rooms, or 50 from vibrating
equipment whichever is greater. To prevent load
transfer to the equipment flanges when the piping system is filled, VMC offers pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers that should be installed at the first

three hanger locations adjacent to the equipment.

These designs ensure that the weight of the piping is
kept off isolated equipment, which will maintain alignment, protect flexible connectors and keep equipment
isolators from becoming overloaded.
The SH-30A Series also offers the capability for the
lower hanger rod to swing approximately 30o to compensate for rod misalignment ensuring that the rod
does not short circuit the hanger by coming in contact
with the hanger box. When isolating ductwork and
suspended ceilings, the SHSC Series can be utilized.
These hangers incorporate eyebolt hardware to
accommodate duct strap connections.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Loads from 21-5000 lbs. with static deflections

up to 5 provide flexibility over a wide range
of applications.

Lower hanger rod on some models enables a 30o

swing to compensate for rod misalignment and
prevents short circuits to the hanger box.

Pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers offer

quick and easy installation in even the most challenging locations.

Color-coded springs provide easy identification of

Spring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.

LOAD RANGE

SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
SHP Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed to isolate low frequency vibrations in air handling units, fans,
ductwork and other suspended equipment. The SHP
Series effectively prevents transmission of vibration
through the piping systems to the building structure.
The SHP Series features pre-positioning hangers that
prevent load transfer to the equipment flanges when
the piping system is filled. The Series also adds a load
bearing plate within the hanger box that keeps suspended piping at a fixed elevation during installation
and start-up. This plate is designed to maintain suspended equipment and piping at a fixed elevation
regardless of load changes.
In piping applications, once the system is filled, the
load is transferred from the plate to the spring, permitting only minimal movement in the piping. This design

ensures that the weight of the piping is kept off the isolated equipment maintaining alignment, protecting
flexible connectors, and preventing isolators from
becoming overloaded. An adjustment nut is provided
to transfer the load to the spring after the piping system has been filled with water, or the equipment is
installed and level.
The SHP Series should be installed at the first three
hanger locations adjacent to the equipment and may
be fastened directly to the building structure. It is recommended that the hangers be positioned as close to
the ceiling as possible. The hangers are capable of
supporting loads up to 5000 lbs. and offer up to 2 of
static deflection. These products incorporate a colorcoded steel spring for ease of identification and
inspection in the field.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Loads from 60-5000 lbs. with static deflections

up to 2 provide flexibility over a wide range
of applications.

Adjustment nut permits load transfer from the

plate to the spring after the equipment is installed
and level.

Pre-positioning hangers prevent load transfer to the

equipment flanges when the piping system is filled.

Color-coded springs provide easy identification of

Spring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.

Load bearing plate keeps suspended piping at a

fixed elevation during installation and start-up,
regardless of load changes.

SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
The VMC RSH Series Spring-Flex hangers offer an
ideal solution for vibration isolation of suspended piping and equipment. The RSH Series features a steel
spring in combination with an elastomer element for
use in locations where it is critical to isolate both vibration and structure-born noise.
The RSH Series is capable of load ranges from 20 to
5000 lbs and up to 5 of static deflection. This provides a wide range of hanger choices for even the
most demanding applications. Like most VMC products, the RSH Series uses a color-coded steel spring
for ease of identification in the field.
The RSH 30A Series offers all of the above features
plus the capability for the lower hanger rod to swing
approximately 30o to compensate for rod misalign-

ment. This feature ensures that the rod does not short
circuit or compromise the hanger by coming in contact with the hanger box.
When used for all suspended piping in equipment
rooms, Spring-Flex hangers should be placed within
the first 50 of the equipment. To prevent load transfer
to the equipment flanges when the piping system is
filled, VMC offers pre-compressed and pre-positioning
hangers that should be installed at the first three hanger locations adjacent to the equipment. These designs
ensure that the weight of the piping is kept off isolated
equipment, which will maintain alignment, protect flexible connectors, and keep equipment isolators from
becoming overloaded.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Elastomeric element offers isolation from noise as

well as vibration.

Loads from 20-5000 lbs and static deflections

up to 5 provide flexibility over a wide range
of applications.

Pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers offer

quick and easy installation in even the most challenging locations.

236

Lower hanger rod on some models enables a 30o

swing to compensate for rod misalignment and
prevents compromising the effectiveness of the
hanger box.

Color-coded springs provide easy identification of

Spring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.

LOAD RANGE

SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
RSHP Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed to
effectively prevent the transmission of vibration through
the piping systems to the building structure. The RSHP
Series is also ideal for use in air handling units, ductwork and other suspended equipment.
The RSHP Series features pre-positioning hangers that
prevent load transfer to the equipment flanges when
the piping system is filled. The Series also adds a load
bearing plate within the hanger box that keeps suspended piping at a fixed elevation during installation
and start-up. This plate is designed to maintain suspended equipment and piping at this fixed elevation
regardless of load changes.
Once the system is filled, the load is transferred from
the plate to the spring permitting only minimal movement in the piping. This design ensures that the weight

of the piping is kept off the isolated equipment maintaining alignment, protecting flexible connectors, and
preventing isolators from becoming overloaded. An
adjustment nut is provided to transfer the load to the
spring after the piping system has been filled with
water, or the equipment is installed and level.
The RSHP Series should be installed at the first three
hanger locations adjacent to the equipment and may
be fastened directly to the building structure. It is recommended that the hangers be positioned as close to
the ceiling as possible. The hangers are capable of
supporting loads up to 5000 lbs. and offer up to 2 of
static deflection. The products incorporate a colorcoded steel spring for ease of identification and
inspection in the field.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Loads from 60-5000 lbs. with static deflections

up to 2 provide flexibility over a wide range
of applications.

Pre-positioning and pre-compressed hangers prevent load transfer to the equipment flanges and
simplify installation.

Load bearing plate keeps suspended piping at a

fixed elevation during installation and start-up,
regardless of load changes.

Adjustment nut permits load transfer from the plate

to the spring after the piping is installed and level.

Color-coded springs provide easy identification of

Spring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.

LOAD RANGE

SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
KDX Series Spring-Flex mountings are designed to isolate low frequency vibrations in locations where there is
minimal space available such as in suspended
mechanical equipment room applications.
The KDX Series are unhoused spring mountings that
are laterally stable. The series incorporates a color-

coded steel spring along with spring cups and elastomeric washers. The KDX Series are installed directly
below suspended mechanical equipment, clevis or trapeze hangers, or directly above a steel support beam.
The hangers are capable of supporting loads up to
2500 lbs. and provide up to 1.5 of static deflection.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Color-coded springs provide easy identification

of Spring-Flex mountings for installation and
inspection.
