Head START

Head of the river Amstel

8km

Every year in march, the largest regatta in the

Netherlands is held on the river Amstel in Am-
sterdam: the Head of the River Amstel.

The 8km long course leads from the very heart

of the city to the idyllic outskirts, through grass-
land polders and along windmills.

More than 4000 participants are competing

against each other in races for Juniors, Se-
niors and Masters. The prestigious University
freshman crews will meet for the first time and
the complete dutch national team will row in
their club’s own crews to win the blue ribbon
for the best eight.

Amsterdam
The city of Amsterdam has a unique character. On the one hand it is famous
for its historical town center with beautiful monuments and typical canal
houses. On the other hand it is the example of the modern Dutch free lifestyle.
Amsterdam is the capital city of the country on many aspects, economically
and culturally, but it is also the biggest students city of the country.

Rowing in the Netherlands

Rowing competitions have a special character in the Netherlands. Each rowing
team is followed and encouraged by its supporters who use to cycle along the
canals. The first year eight rowing teams are mostly being followed by dozens
of supporters. During the Head of the River Amstel, it is possible to follow the
whole traject of the competition from the stream bank. The stream bank is even
especially reserved for supporters during the final 4 kilometers. This guaran-
tees a great show and animation.
