Welcome Message
From the Principal’s Desk
Grade Level Update
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Title One Update

The time for the annual FCAT Assessment is here! I am so proud

of how hard our teachers and staff members have worked to get
prepared for this important upcoming week. I know that our
students will show off what they have learned this school year.

This past month we had many exciting things happen at Oriole.

We were featured in both The Sun-Sentinel and The Miami Herald
for our one of a kind GET TAGGED idea. We also served as the
host school for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Sexual Predator
informational meeting on March 4, 2010. Please continue to show
your support to our school by attending our monthly SAC/SAF/PTO
meetings to stay informed with what is going on at our wonderful
school. You, the parent/guardian, serve as an integral part in the
social, emotional, and behavioral development of your child.

Sincerely,

Ryan T. Reardon

to the parent and copied to the school social worker.

Bus PM Pickups (East Side)

School Zone Rules

We are asking for your assistance in obeying School Zone Rules when near our campus. Please be mindful of
the 15 MPH speed limit law. Due to the increase of speeding cars, we have requested the assistance of our local
law enforcement to run radar/laser to help assist us in protecting our students. Secondly, many parents have
been observed using their cellular phone while driving through our drop-off and pick-up loops. Please note the
posted sign which outlines the statute of, “Cellular phone use while in these areas are restricted.”

Afternoon Procedures
Students are to be picked up from the west side only prior to 2:15 p.m. After 2:15 p.m. these gates will be
locked an all parents must enter the campus through the east side gate, proceed to the front office and sign their
child out. Any pattern of late student pick-up will be referred to the proper agency.

Tardy Procedures
Teachers at our school begin their instruction in the classroom at 8:00 a.m. each day. Thus, any student who
arrives to class after 8:00 a.m. must enter through the front office and receive a tardy pass. Any pattern of
excessive tardiness can and will warrant an administrative conference. Should you have any questions, please

Partners in Education
The Partners in Education program links businesses and organizations
with schools in relationships that enhance student learning and promote
school improvement. In a partnership, a business adopts a school, or
schools, and shares its human and material resources. Education and
business are so closely related that each flourishes from the support and
prosperity of the other. Schools must prepare today's students for their
entry into a diverse, competitive work force. When businesses take part in
the education of these young people, they help strengthen the work force
of the future. The Partners in Education program is vital in helping the
community and the school grow together. Any questions, please contact
Dr. Reardon at 754-322-7550. Currently our school partners are:

School-Wide Teacher Updates

Mr. Jones’ First Grade Class

Fantastic First...Yes it is crunch time for the intermediate grades. However, it is also crunch time for primary
grades as well. The end of year is near. We in first grade are reading more with our AR books, comprehending
more with our Treasures stories, adding and subtracting more with our math benchmarks, writing more with our
expository as well as narrative prompts, and using more grammar with our language arts. We in first-grade are
building our strong academic foundation. This foundation will carry us through the rest of our educational lives.

Ms. Fazzolari's 2nd Grade Class

Reading- The third quarter has been very busy and productive. We have been focusing on different strategies
that helps increase test scores on their mini assessments and FCAT weekly assessments. We have been
studying such strategies as compare and contrast, author's purpose, making inferences, and finding the problem
and solution in a story. We are also focusing on test taking strategies such as eliminating wrong answers,
underlining the passage where they found their answer, and checking their work twice. The End of the Year
Assessment is vastly approaching, so these strategies will help them be exceptionally prepared for this.

Math- Money and counting coins has been our focus. We have been practicing adding and subtracting cents. We
have also been using estimation to round prices to the nearest ten, comparing amounts of money, using the
fewest amounts of coins to make an amount. We also enjoy engaging in calendar math on a daily basis. In
calendar math, they practice activities such as place value, how to read a calendar, even and odd numbers, and
time. Students also get an opportunity to answer a Math Problem of the Day. This question they are given are
similar to questions from their quarterly QBAT. The student with the winning answer gets a sticker. Students
enjoy this and it’s preparing them for their QBAT tests.

Writing/Language Arts- We are focusing on Narrative writing. What this involves is having students create a
problem and then find a solution to the problem. Their first paragraph will include characters, the setting, and a
problem in the story. Their second paragraph is their first way to solve the problem but it doesn't work. Their
third paragraph is another way they try to solve the problem but it doesn't work as well. The fourth paragraph is
the solution to their problem. Their finished product should be 4 detailed paragraphs of what takes place. They
should make sure they include capitalization and punctuation in the right areas. They are also learning to include
quotation marks when one of their characters is talking.

Science- Science is exciting with the study of space and weather. We have been studying the water cycle,
different types of weather, and how different weather conditions are measured. We also are learning about
different types of clouds such as cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds. We even took a little walk to identify
different clouds in the sky. We have also learned about the four seasons and how they differentiate from one
another. As a class, we created a bulletin board based on the four seasons. Be on the look out for it!

Social Studies- We are studying Unit 4-People Make History. Students are studying how events and new
technologies in America's history have helped promote change. We are also learning how early inhabitants
adapted themselves to their environment.

We are thoroughly enjoying the 3rd quarter and we will continue to work hard so we will be successful and
prepared for 3rd grade!!

Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s 3rd Grade Class

The students in Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s are still working in the Blitz mode. We are
continuing to review all of the previously taught benchmarks in reading and math, while
using all reading strategies and test taking skills. As we quickly approach the day of
testing, we are also discussing how to relax and test. We were blessed with a source of
reading and materials that we are able to use in order to “show what we know.” During
our review of reference and research, Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s class decided to allow
everyone to do a research project on a famous African-American. The students were
given a rubric to follow and after a few weeks of research, they let their new knowledge
shine. They created poster boards that displayed their person of interest. They included
information such as what the person’s life was like before he/she became famous as well
as what
made them famous. They used critical thinking skills and answered some of the following
questions:
• How they believed the world would be different without the person’s
contributions
• Why the person deserves to be researched
• What question they would ask the person if they had the chance as well as
what that person’s answer might be
The students final criteria of the research project was to present their information orally.
Some of them dressed as the person they researched about. Some brought in items that
were actually invented by their person of interest. All of them stood proudly and gave
information about the person that they researched. Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s students are
pumped up, prepared and ready to take this FCAT based on the mastery that they are
showing on the various practice/review work.

Title One Update

Parents:

There are many things coming up regarding Title I requirements

that the school must complete. You are encouraged to get involved
with this process by attending our monthly SAC meetings. This month,
we will be reviewing our School-Parent Compact. This is an agreement
that states what the school, the parent, and the student will do to
ensure that our school is successful and our students are learning.

We will also be reviewing the Parent Evaluation tool. This tool is

given to parents to complete. It asks a parent to review the Title I
program that is in place at the school. The school will use the results
to improve our program and plan activities to meet the needs of our
families.

Not all families will receive an evaluation to complete. However,

if your child brings one home, you are strongly encouraged to
complete the survey and return it back to the school. Without your
input, the school will not be able to improve its practices as they
pertain to Parental Involvement.

I would like to thank all of those parents that have been involved
this year. By attending parent conferences, Report Card Nights, and
other school related activities, you are helping your child’s academic
performance. We appreciate all you do.

Sincerely,

Traci Porter
