MODULAR ABATTOIR PLANTS

BOVINE, OVINE & RENDERING

OVERVIEW:
Niven Abattoir Equipment offers a diverse range of portable Abattoir and Rendering module packages.
The key philosophy behind the concept is ease of distribution, erection and re-location. All modules pack
down to a standard container format, typically 40ft 'high cube'. All modules are fitted with container
locks at all corners to allow for simple transportation, be it by road, rail or sea.
Our range of Standard Modular equipment consists of:

Modular Bovine processing

Modular Ovine processing
Modular Rendering

(slaughter floor, chilling, boning & packing)

(slaughter floor, chilling, boning & packing)
(for all edible and inedible offals)

Typical 60 head per shift Modular Beef Abattoir

LIVESTOCK PROCESSING:
Our livestock processing range consists of two fundamental concepts, which primarily differ in the
internal heights available inside the modules, the Ovine range is geared towards smaller livestock, such
as sheep, whilst the Bovine range is geared towards larger livestock such as Beef.
The important heights for each system are as noted (*TOR being the Top of Railing for conveyors):
Modular Bovine

Modular Ovine

Floor to Ceiling Height

4600mm (15 feet)

Floor to TOR* max height

4400mm (14 foot 5in) maximum

Floor to Ceiling Height

2400mm (8 feet)

Floor to TOR* max height

2150mm (7 feet) maximum

MODULAR BOVINE:
The Modular Bovine series accommodates large livestock, and is unique in that the container modules
are hinged along the top edge. This means that once the module arrives on site, it is opened like a
clamshell to give a very high internal working space. A second module is opened alongside the first, and
the two modules are then pushed together to form an enclosed space.
The tall internal working space means these modules are ideal for processing large livestock, such as:
Beef
Deer
Camel

Typical 60 head per shift

Modular Beef Abattoir
Slaughter Floor Module

Slaughter Floor Module

Designed to process 60 beef over a ten hour working shift
Slaughter Floor module 12.2m x 4.9m (40 feet x 16 feet)
On rail processing either gravity assisted or mechanized
Typical Components:
- Stun Box
- Auto Lander
- Downward Hide Puller
- Rise and Fall Platforms
- Detain Area

Carcass Chiller Module

Single Module designed to accommodate 75 head (120% of shift kill)
Carcass chiller module 12.2m x 4.9m (40 feet x 16 feet)
Capable of reducing carcass temperature to 10 C (50F) with overnight chilling
Additional carcass chilling modules of equal size can be added as required

Boning Room Module

Designed to process 60 beef over a ten hour working shift
Boning room module 12.2m x 4.9m (40 feet x 16 feet)
Air conditioned to maintain 10C (50F)
The main components of the boning room include:
- Quarter rail boning system
- Band saw
- Boning/trim tables
- Packing station
- Vacuum packaging machine
- Meat conveyor
- Hygiene ware
- Bone collection

Typical Bovine Slaughter Floor Layout (consisting of single module in the form of paired 40 foot units)

Carton Chiller
Designed to chill cartooned meat product to 3 C with an overnight chill
Carton Room
Designed for storage of cartons and liners and is located adjacent to the carton chiller
Ancillary Rooms
As required change rooms, wash rooms, office blocks etc.

MODULAR OVINE:
The Modular Ovine series accommodates smaller livestock, and is more straightforward than the Bovine
series as there is no hinging mechanism involved.
The internal working space means these modules are ideal for processing small to medium livestock,
such as:
Lamb & Sheep
Bobby Calves
Goat

Typical 1000 head per shift

Modular Lamb Abattoir
Slaughter Floor Module

As with the Bovine Series abattoir range, the Ovine series also offers the following modules:
Slaughter Floor Modules
Carcass Chiller Modules
Boning Room Modules
Offal Collection Modules
Carton Chiller Modules
Carton Room / Load-out Modules
Ancillary Modules (wash room, change room, offices)

TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION:
All design, specification, and manufacture of the Modular range of plant is performed at our extensive
Fabrication workshop, which is located in Napier, New Zealand.
General module construction is fully compliant with USDA, EU and Halal requirements where specified.
The process module shells are constructed from grade AS3679-300 steel, and upon completion all
steelwork is Hot Dip Galvanized to AS/NZ 4680 standards. These steel portal frames support a light
coloured, polystyrene panel wall and ceiling system, protected by a coated aluminium skin which gives
the modules very good insulative qualities.
All ceilings, walls and floors are designed with ease of cleaning, and minimisation of foreign matter traps
as primary considerations. Our designers have developed a number of custom aluminium flashings to
help achieve a very hygienic system.
All spaces have appropriate drainage, and all processing / chilling / boning modules have a central gutter
system, with slightly sloped floors to promote flow of foreign matter to the appropriate gutters.

Typical Bovine type Module, Bovine modules are unique in that although they are based on a standard 40 foot
container constraints, they fold out to allow for an interior floor to ceiling height of 4.6m

Plant and production expansion, as well as added value processes is achieved by installing additional
'modules'. Additionally, complimentary modular blocks are offered for sanitation rooms, change rooms,
and offices amongst others.
All drainage, electrical and plumbing services are provided to ensure these plants are fully operational
within a very short timeframe upon delivery, and are designed to meet all sustainable environmental and
processing codes to either local market, Hallal or EU standards.

MODULAR RENDERING:
Niven offers a modular rendering system, of which the core processing equipment is from our well
proven standard range of Niven equipment.
Typically the modular plants are constructed from 3 individual 40 foot containers, modular rendering
plants are available as both:
Continuous rendering Process
Batch rendering Process
Throughput is generally dictated by the size and specification of the drier unit (specified from the
standard Niven Batch (No5) or Continuous Rendering (DR series) units)
Additionally condensing modules and odour control modules can be supplied as modular type units to
further enhance the rendering plant.
