Career-focused Programmes
Enhancing the future employability of the graduates
Internships in biotechnology and molecular biosciences companies and organisations
are available to students, plus frequent educational visits to such companies and
organisations.

The Bachelor of Biotechnology (Hons) programme offers a holistic approach to

learning, capped off by a compulsory four-month internship with biotechnology and
molecular biosciences companies. This serves to enhance the future employability
of graduates.

21st Century Quality

Our Australian Degree Transfer Programme (Science) graduates have a proven track
record in producing achievers with First and Second Class Upper Honours and have
secured international scholarships from reputable universities.

Globally recognised and holistic-based curriculum

The programme offers current development in the fields of biotechnology and the life
sciences and is focused on different areas of biotechnology (agriculture, healthcare,
industry, etc.). It also provides sound training in the core molecular biosciences
(biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and immunology).

Quality assured
Our Australian Degree Transfer Programme (Science) is moderated by the University
of Adelaide, one of the top 200 universities in the world acknowledged by the
Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings and one of the heavyweight
universities in Australia.

State-of-the-art laboratory
Students obtain extensive hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment.

International Experience
Flexibility to transfer to reputable partner universities overseas
Students can choose either 1 or 2 years of study at INTI before transferring to
any degree and major in Biotech & Life Sciences. The Australian Degree Transfer
Programme (Science) offers the most number of degrees and majors in biotechnology
and life sciences under a single programme.

Partnership with reputable universities

Five of our partner universities are consistently ranked among the top 200 universities
in the world by the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings. They
are the University of Queensland (Australia), the University of New South Wales
(Australia), the University of Adelaide (Australia), the University of Southampton
(United Kingdom) and Newcastle University (United Kingdom).

Inspiring scientific talks

These are conducted by visiting scientists and professors.

Why Biotechnology
& Life Sciences?
The 21st century is said to belong to Biotechnology and the Life Sciences, just as the
20th century belonged to Information Technology. Global revenue of biotechnology
and life sciences products have been progressively increasing from US$ 23 billion in
2000 to US$ 50 billion in 2005 to US$ 89.7 billion in 2008. It is predicted that by
2015, about 5,000 biotechnology firms will make over US$ 1 trillion.

Malaysia’s drive to set up a biotechnology and life sciences industry gained substantial
momentum under the 9th Malaysia Plan, allocating RM 2.02 billion (compared to
RM 574.4 million under the 8th Malaysia Plan), and instituting several measures,
among which are the creation of the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation as the
driver of the industry; the National Biotechnology Policy comprising three phases
of development; and granting of BioNexus status to biotechnology companies.

The number of biotechnology companies granted the BioNexus status have

increased from initially 7 in 2006 to 42 in 2007, 92 in 2008 and to 104 as of May
2009. In 2008, investments totalled RM 1.3 billion and revenue generated was RM
378.6 million, which is projected to increase to RM 45 billion by 2013.

With the increasingly promising outlook in Malaysia and elsewhere, biotechnology

and life sciences graduates will be in demand in the years to come.

BIOCHEMISTRY
Biochemistry, the amalgamation of biology and chemistry, opens the door to deciphering the structures and functions of
proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other bio-molecules, the mechanisms of enzyme action, elucidation of
metabolic pathways and their control, and understanding of life processes through the laws of chemistry. Biochemistry also
involves in-depth studies of the molecular basis of genetics.

FOOD SCIENCE
Food Science is the study of the basic chemical, physical, biochemical and biophysical properties of foods and their
constituents, and of changes that these may undergo during handling, preservation, processing, storage, distribution and
preparation for consumption. Examples of the activities of food scientists include the development of new food products,
design of processes to produce these foods, choice of packaging materials, shelf-life studies, sensory evaluation of the
product with trained expert panels or potential consumers, as well as microbiological and chemical testing.

GENETICS
Genetics identifies the molecular, cellular, and organismal aspects of heredity in animals and plants. It also considers the
hereditary mechanisms of micro-organisms, human hereditary disorders and DNA technology.

MICROBIOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, yeasts, moulds, viruses, rickettsia and protozoa.
It examines the diversity, structure, function, growth, reproduction, genetics, physiology, preservation and control of
these microorganisms. Microbiology also examines mutation, gene mapping and structure, means of transferring genetic
information and applications of genetic modifications.

Immunology covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in human and other organisms. It deals with, among
other things, the physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both health and disease; malfunctions of
the immune system in immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, allograft
rejection); and the physical, chemical, and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Molecular biology is the study of the molecular foundation of living organisms, especially on how DNA is used to define an
organism, how genes are regulated, and how human beings are related to other organisms. Like biochemistry, it underlies
many aspects of genetic engineering, protein engineering, and other new approaches to improving upon nature.

NUTRITION
Nutrition is the discipline that examines the effects of food components on the metabolism, health, performance, and
disease resistance of humans and animals. It also includes the study of human behaviour related to foods.

PROGRAMME ACADEMIC PATHWAY

Australian Degree Transfer Programme (Science)

This programme enables students to pursue studies in biotechnology, life sciences,

molecular biosciences or biomedical sciences up to the first two years of degree
studies. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will transfer to
one of the partner universities in Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom
to complete the degree. It is noteworthy that a number of the partner universities
are consistently ranked among the top 200 universities worldwide by the The
Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings, including The University
of Adelaide, The University of New South Wales, The University of Queensland,
University of Southampton and Newcastle University.

In Year 1, students take up the core basic sciences in chemistry and molecular and
cell biology, supported by courses in mathematics, management, and computing.
Upon this foundation, students proceed to Year 2 courses in biochemistry, genetics,
microbiology and immunology or biotechnology, which are the “cornerstone” courses in
biotechnology, molecular biosciences and biomedical sciences. Coupled with this is the
emphasis placed by the programme on laboratory work where students gain extensive
hands-on experience using state-of the-art equipment. Students of the programme
are, therefore, well prepared by the time they transfer to partner universities.

Due to the core courses students take at Year 2, they are able to proceed to various
majors at partner universities. Some of the popular majors include biochemistry,
biomedical science, biotechnology, food science, genetics, microbiology and
immunology, molecular biology and nutrition.
