MCR3U Unit 2 Practice Problems

1. Without using a calculator, determine the exact value of each of the following:
a. Sin 135 [Answer = 1/sqrt(2)]
b. Cos -750 [Answer = sqrt(3)/2]
c. Tan 1470 [Answer = 1/sqrt(3)]

2. Determine the angle(s) A between 0 and 360 for each of the following equations:
a. A = Sin -1 (0.3) [Answer = 17.5 or 162.5]
b. A = Cos -1 (-0.75) ) [Answer = 138.5 or 221.5]
c. A = Tan -1 (-2.5) ) [Answer = 17.5 or 162.5]

3. For each of the following functions …

a. f (x) = 2sin (3(x – 35)) – 4 [Answer = vertical stretch by 2, horizontal
compression by 3, horizontal shift 35 degrees right and vertical shift 4
units down, a = 2, k = 3, d = 35 and c = -4, amplitude = 2, axis of the
curve = -4, period = 120 and phase shift = 35]

b. f (x) = -0.5cos (0.5(x + 45)) + 2 [Answer = reflection in x-axis, vertical

compression by 2, horizontal stretch by 2, shift left 45 degrees and
vertical shift up 2 units, a = -0.5, k = 0.4, d = -45 and c = 2, amplitude
= 0.5, axis of the curve = 2, period = 180 and phase shift = -45]

c. f (x) = 5 sin (4x + 120) – 3 [Answer = vertical stretch by 5, horizontal

compression by 4, horizontal shift 30 degrees left, vertical shift down 3
units, amplitude = 5, axis of the curve = -3, period = 90 and phase shift
= -30]

i. Describe, using transformation terminology, how each of the base

Sine or Cosine function has been transformed to arrive at each of
the functions.
ii. Graph two (2) cycles of each of the functions by first identifying
the values of the parameters a, k, c and d
iii. Identify each of the following properties of each function –
amplitude, axis of the curve, period and phase shift.

*** You can check your graphs using GSP ***

4. Using the graph of f (x) below …

a. determine the equation of the function f (x). [Answer - f (x) = 7sin (1/3(x
- 210 ) + 9 ]
b. if f (x)describes the height (measured in metres) of a rider on a roller-
coaster ride over time (measured in seconds), describe the physical set-up
of the ride that corresponds to the graph below. [Answer = The rider
boards the ferris wheel at 3 metres off of the ground ( 1m above the
bottom of the ferris wheel], then rotates in a direction so that they start to
move higher (ie. clockwise if they boarded the wheel from the left and
counter-clockwise if they boarded the wheel from the right]. It takes them
480 seconds to reach the top of the wheel, another 540 seconds to reach
the bottom of the wheel (which is 2m above ground level) and then returns
to the boarding platform a total of 1080 seconds from when they started
their trip!
