As we enter the peer review component of the PBL course development a process I have been
exploring a few of the options available for collaborative and group activities. The first one I
looked at was the termed CPR - Calibrated Peer Review. While I am certain it is a wonderful
online tool that would be very adaptable and functional for many learning experiences I
personally found the process extremely complex. This format however would satisfy a
multitude of curriculum standards and requirement as well as set of rules for the reviewer,
reviewee and instructor/facilitator. I am certain that once employed/deployed it serves as a
strong and comprehensive peer review tool. This process also appears to be well suited for an
online of blended environment where a majority of the work could be accomplished remotely.
Personally I found the Critical Friends Process of particular interest. This could be due to my
instruction and facilitation experience has involved adult learners. I agree with the premise
that many leaders are trained to talk around and avoid difficult issues, not carefully confront
them. I like the concept three discrete components which include the peer observations,
tuning using the artifacts brought to light during the discovery, and finally a consultation
process. I also feel that the format defining feedback as warm; supportive, cool; distanced, or
hard; challenging, frees the reviews to be honest and protected by the protocol of the
approach. While this approach is not well suited for online environment, I believe it could be
very useful in a blended primarily face-to-face format such as mine. The one downside to this
approach is the amount time it may require to complete.
