Exam Tips
When you have finished writing there are a number
of things you should check.
First of all, read through what you have written
and check for spelling problems. Then look at the
punctuation.
Have you got sentences that are far too long,
or that need a comma?
Do the verbs agree with the subject?
Is your use of word order correct or have you
written in the syntax of your native language?
Finally, check your use of tenses to see if they are
correct and appropriate.

A group of friends went on holiday to the South of France. The weather was
good, so the friends decided to rent a car and spend the day on the beach.
Jonathan kept the car keys in his pocket. Hours passedand Jonathan forgot he
had the car keys in his pocket. He went swimming, played beach volleyball and
sunbathed.
It was getting dark so the friends decided to go home. Jonathan went to
unlock the car door but he had lost the keys!
Swimming in the sea was a boy wearing a snorkel and a mask. Jonathan asked
the boy to help him find his keys. The boy dived deep down to the bottom of
the sea. A few seconds later the boy appeared holding Jonathan's car keys.
The friends were so happy and grateful for the boy's help that they bought

Derby City council has told schools to cancel trips if it's too sunny to stop the

Exam Tips
When you first start to answer a writing question, it is
worth spending a couple of minutes writing a plan.
Make sure that you have included all the points that are
required. Use a different paragraph for every point.
You need to be able to expand on each point, giving
more information or expressing your opinion and
giving reasons for it.
By planning your composition, you will also avoid
repetition and ensure that your argument is presented
in a logical way.

'Wrong' (B)? If there is not enough information to answer 'Right' (A) or 'Wrong' (B), choose 'Doesn't
y' (C). For questions 21 ~27, markA, B or C.
MADAME TUSSAUDS
Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities.
It has a lot of famous people made from wax. Wax is a solid substance that becomes soft when warm and
melts easily. It comes from bees and is often used to make candles. Many people visit wax museums
because the sculptures look like they are real.
A visit to Madame Tussauds wouldn't be complete without meeting the Royal Family. Dating
back over ten centuries, the Monarchy has played an important role in the UK, but rather than reading all
about it in a dusty history book you'll meet history's royalties face to face at Madame Tussauds! You can
plant a kiss on Prince William's cheek, or shake Prince Charles's hand.
Of course the late Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales are here too looking as beautiful as ever.
Finally, travel back in time to the Tudor times. Ever heard of Henry VIII? He ruled England in
the sixteenth century and is mostly known for his six wives and for declaring himself head of the new
Church of England.

0 There are many branches of Madame Tussauds

TEST 1
This is the Cambridge Preliminary English Test. There are four parts to the test. You will hear each part twice. For each
part of the test there will be time for you to look through the questions and time for you to check your answers. Write your
answers on the question paper. You will have six minutes at the end of the test to copy your answers onto the answer sheet.
The recording will now be stopped. Please ask any questions now, because you must not speak during the test.
[Pause 5 seconds.]
Part 1
There are seven questions in this part. For each question there are three pictures and a short recording. Choose the correct picture and put a tick in the box below it. Before we start, here is an example.
Example: Where did the woman leave her hat?
W: Oh no! What have I done with my hat?
M: You didnt have it in the cafe.
W: But I meant to wear it because I remember taking it out of the car with my bag.
M: Yes, I saw you put your things on the roof of the car.
W: Oh no! I know where it still is then!
[Pause 5 seconds.]
The second picture is correct so there is a tick in box B. Look at the three pictures for question 1 now.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear each recording twice.
1. How did the woman travel?
M: Im surprised that you drove all the way to Liverpool.
F: Well, actually I decided it would be better not to take the car in the end.
M: Oh really! What made you change your mind?
F: The train doesnt get stuck in traffic jams and I didnt want to be late to meet my sister when she arrived at the harbour.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]
2. What time does the film start?
M: What time shall I come to your house?
F: Six oclock, so that we dont have to hurry.
M: That gives us a whole hour until the film starts, and it only takes ten minutes to walk to the cinema.
F: I know, but I thought we could go for a coffee first.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]
3. What does the man eat?
F: Are you ready to order your meal, Sir?
M: Yes. Id like steak and chips please.
F: Im very sorry Sir, but weve run out of steak.
M: Oh, thats a shame.
F: The chicken is very good today and so is the fish.
M: Okay Ill have chicken and chips... Oh, actually, Im on a diet so Id better have salad instead of the chips.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]
4. Which book is Jackie reading?
M: Are you still reading that history book Jackie?
F: Actually Im just reading something for fun.
M: Thats unusual for you. You always seem to be studying these days.
F: Exactly, thats why I thought a bit of poetry might help me to relax.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]
5. Where did the man leave his keys?
M: Have you seen my keys?
F: Arent they on the table?
M: No, I looked there.
F: How about in your coat pocket?
M: Oh yes, they are probably there... Oh! No they arent.
F: Well what is that in your hand?
M: Oops, silly me!
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]
6. Which present did Mark buy?
M: I wanted to buy Jane a blouse but Im not sure what size she is.
F: How about buying her a nice scarf?
M: Do you think shed rather have that than a pair of gloves?
F: I think so.
M: Oh okay then.
[Pause 5 seconds.] Now listen again. [Repeat the recording.] [Pause 5 seconds.]

WRITING SUPPLEMENT
This Writing Supplement includes model answers for all the writing tasks from the Practice Tests. Example
candidate answers at varying levels are also provided followed by detailed justifications of the marks awarded.
Test 1
Question 6 - Model Answer
This is an example of a very good answer.
Hi Anne!
Thank you so much for the handbag. I really like it
because now I have something nice to carry my
make-up around in. My brother, Simon, bought me a
lovely pearl necklace, too. Arent I lucky?!
All my love,
Jody
Mark 4: All three points are adequately dealt with. In spite of minor errors ("the so nice birthday present",
"CD you did for me"), the message is clearly communicated with little effort on the part of the reader.
Mark 3: This is an adequate attempt. While there are only a few non-impeding errors ("Thank for the
letter" "It is quiet area" "the only bad is" "it take"), the language, structure and vocabulary is rather
unambitious for the level. Some effort is required of the reader.
Mark 4: This is a good attempt at the task. The language is sometimes ambitious ("...and swim but it will be a
journey of five hours") and a good range of structures are used although there are sometimes mistakes in simple
constructions ("a child is misbehaves it will ", " that it take ", "...to listen.") or tense ("we are very tired", "I bring").
Overall, however, little effort is required for the reader to understand the meaning.

Test 2
Question 6 - Model Answer
This is an example of a very good answer.
Dear Paul,
I hope you are well. I was wondering, would you
like to come visit me this summer? I think you
would love my home in the countryside its big
and it has a lovely flower garden. How about the
second week of August?
Write back soon,
Joey
Mark 3: Two of the content points are clearly communicated, and very little effort is required of the reader,
however the third point is omitted, preventing a higher score from being awarded.
Band 2: The limited range of structures and vocabulary does not allow the task to be adequately achieved.
It is shorter than the word requirement, which limits the mark that may be awarded. Also, there are impeding errors in vocabulary ("patients", "myselves"), punctuation use is erratic ( "... important museums the museums") and there is noticeable repetition ("...place...", "...important...", "...enjoy...").
Mark 5: The writing achieves the desired effect on the target reader. Coherence and organisation of the
text is very strong. The structures and vocabulary used are ambitious for the level, and while there are a few
minor non-impeding errors, no effort is required of the reader.
