ADVANCES IN COMPUTATIONAL PETROLEUM

GEOMECHANICS
Mini-symposium organizers:
Sergio A. B. da Fontoura Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de
Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil fontoura@puc-rio.br
Nelson Inoue GTEP/PUC-Rio, Brazilinoue@puc-rio.br
Antonio Luiz Serra Cenpes/Petrobras, Brazil
alserra@petrobras.com.br

Objectives:
The aim of this mini-symposium is to gather experts and beginners on
the applications of computational methods to solve problems in
petroleum engineering involving the area of geomechanics. Currently
the oil industry faces great challenges associated with the development
of oil fields in areas of complex geology and in some cases subjected to
high pressures and temperature. The solution of these problems calls
for both robust and fast algorithms. The mini-symposium will discuss
problems such as drilling and casing wells through evaporites, drilling
through fractured and faulted regions, and injection of fluids in the
underground and fault reactivation. Most important is the
computational time associated with the proposed algorithms when
modeling the true 3-D nature of the problems. In some cases highperformance computing must be considered in order to allow the
usage of the methods in the solution of practical problems. The minisymposium invites authors to present solutions to reduce the
computational time of highly coupled algorithms through innovative
high-performance software and hardware. There will be four invited
speakers and selected papers to be presented during this one-day long
mini-symposium.

Marcus Vinicius Giro de Morais Federal University of Brasilia (UnB),
Brazil mvmorais@unb.br

Objectives:
Faced with a future scenario of scarcity of fossil fuels and large impacts
on the environment, the use of renewable energy sources has become
wide object of studies that seek to diversify the global energy mix.
Among these various sources, there are others alternatives of sources
such as wind energy. The use of turbines for energy recovery is
characterized as a low environmental impact conversion process,
which can represent innovative solutions in the context of energy local,
regional or national headquarters.
Unexpected failures of wind turbine components, such as blades and
towers are related to up to 40% of a wind farm cost. Reducing
maintenance costs and extend wind turbines lifespan is a challenge.
The aim of this mini symposium is to bring together researchers in
computational mechanics, computer science, engineering and applied
mathematics, and practitioners in wind energy systems, to tackle the
problems of computer based modelling & simulations.

computational modeling to evaluate the shape (arquitecture,

configuration) effect on the performance of engineering systems The
intention is to bring together researchers, students and professionals
in this field and related areas. Constructal Design is based on the
Constructal Law. The Constructal theory explain deterministically how
the generation of shape in flow structures of nature (river basins,
lungs, atmospheric circulation, animal shapes, vascularized tissues, etc)
is based on an evolutionary principle of flow access in time. This
principle is the Constructal law: for a flow system to persist in time (to
survive), it must evolve in such way that it provides easier and easier
access to the currents that flow through it. Concerning the engineering
problems, Constructal Design has been broadly applied for the study
of engineering problems related to several fields. It has been
presented in literature the importance of Constructal Design for the
performance of several problems such as fins, cavities, heat
exchangers, wave energy converters, composed channels, resin
infusion and even structural analysis.

MULTI-SCALE MODELING OF MATERIALS AND

STRUCTURES
Mini-symposium organizers:
Peter Berke Universidade Federal do Cear (UFC), Brazil
pberke@ulb.ac.be

Objectives:
Most modern materials and structures built from them owe their
advanced properties to the underlying engineered material
microstructure. Microstructural effects play a determinant role in the
behavior of heterogeneous materials, since materials mechanics
initiated at the smallest scale determines the macroscopic or structural
response (e.g. stress and strain levels, plastic straining, fracture, etc.).
An-in depth understanding and realistic prediction of the complex and
possibly nonlinear behavior of such materials and structures through
numerical simulations is of obvious and growing importance. This
usually requires the development and use of (nonlinear) multi-scale

Objectives:
The Building Information Modeling (BIM) represents a paradigm
change for existing practices in the Architecture, Engineering,
Construction, and facility Operations (AECO). The move from drafting
to computer aided design (CAD) sought to automate existing practices
but BIM virtually builds a structure first. Construction prototypes can
be virtually designed and constructed. These virtual models can be
used for simulating, analyzing and evaluating various courses of action
in order to obtain an improved design and construction. The

multidisciplinary integration is provided by the building digital model

since the early phases of architectural design with an initial form
concept, through the structural design and multidisciplinary project
coordination, and gaining effectiveness in the area of sustainability
analysis for design aspects such as day-lighting, climate control, and
energy usage. This mini-symposium intends to address this new

Objectives:
Dynamical systems are those whose state changes over time, an
example is a pendulum oscillation. Such systems can be found in many
science areas and its evolution law is described mathematically
through differential equations. The control theory is an
interdisciplinary theme originating in engineering and mathematics
that aims to influence the behavior of dynamic systems. Mechanical
vibrations are examples of dynamical systems. They are caused by
time-varying excitations that are submitted components, set of
components or complete structures. Excessive vibrations in these
systems are not desirable as it may compromise the performance and
also cause its collapse. In this context, the vibration control is a
technology which aims to reduce excessive vibration levels through the

installation of external devices or the action of external forces which

promote changes in the stiffness and damping system. The main

in vibration control and its application to present and discuss the latest
developments in the field.
