The liturgy today explains

the basis of our Faith as acceptance of Jesus as the
Christ, the Son of the Living
God and our Lord and Savior. It also tells us that Christ Jesus became our
Savior by his suffering, death and Resurrection.
Todays first reading is taken from the book of
prophet Isaiah which is also known as the Song of
the Suffering Servant. Here Jesus saw aspects of
his own life and mission foreshadowed in Isaiahs
Servant Song. Hence, this section of the third song
is presented as the first reading today, while in the
Gospel, Jesus foretells for the first time his passion, death and Resurrection, after Peter has professed his Faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Savior.
Jesus identified himself and his mission with the
sorrowful figure of humiliation and suffering, the
Lords servant. Like the servant described in todays first reading, Jesus life was one of a radical
obedience and conformity to Gods will. Thus, the
Servant passage provides background for the revelation of Jesus as the suffering Messiah.
Todays second reading, taken from the second
letter of James, reminds us that suffering is not
only something to be accepted but also something
to be alleviated through our concrete action. James
tells us that our Faith in Jesus must be expressed
in our action through works of mercy, both corSCRIPTURE READINGS

poral and spiritual. In other words, professing

faith in Jesus is not enough, unless we practice
that faith in genuine deeds of love, mercy, forgiveness, and humble service as Jesus lived and
demonstrated. Otherwise, our Faith is all talk and
no action, Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is
dead.
In the Gospel, in response to Peters profession of
Faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Savior, the Lord
foretells for the first time his suffering, death and
Resurrection. Todays Gospel consists of two sections: the Messianic confession of Peter, who
acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God and Jesus prediction of his passion, death
and Resurrection, followed by his clear teaching
on the three conditions of Christian discipleship,
namely, denying oneself, taking up ones cross, and
following Jesus. We need to follow Jesus in word
and action, even to death trusting that he will ultimately save us.
Jesus wants to become a living and a concrete reality for us, loving us, forgiving us, helping us,
transforming our lives and outlook and building a
personal relationship with us. The knowledge of
Jesus as Lord and personal Savior needs to become
a living, personal experience for each one of us
drawing us to loving response. The relationship
deepens and grows

as we listen to him through the daily, meditative

reading of the Bible, speak to him in our daily, personal and family prayers, offer him our lives on the
altar in the Holy Mass and get reconciled with him,
asking his forgiveness for our sins every night and
in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. By doing this
we will grow and nurture our faith and our faith
will become a living and concrete reality like the
disciples; and we too can profess like Peter, You
are the Christ.

On another note, I wanted to officially inform you

of the changes in the parish staff. Maria Belflower
has left and Mary Wilson has been hired to fill her
position as new office administrative assistant and
contact person for weddings. David Stevens, our
Director of Liturgical Music and Youth Coordinator is moving on from our family of Santa Sophia.
His official last date with us was September 6, but
he has agreed to continue to play at least this
month until we find a replacement. I am grateful
for their work to our Santa Sophia community.
Truly we were blessed to have them with us. We
will remember them with gratitude for their commitment and dedicated service to this community. I
wish them both many blessings and best wishes
with their new assignment. We are in the process
hiring a new Director of Liturgical Music and
Youth Coordinator and I will keep you posted as
soon as I have more information. I know changes
are hard, but let us reflect on the readings and
know that God has a plan for each and every one of
us. I thank you for your patience and support.

Registration will continue Monday through Friday. Registration will take place in

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PARENT MEETING

On Sun. Sept 20, we will begin the 2015 - 2016 Religious Ed. year with an Orientation Meeting for all parents
who have children in preschool - grade 8. This meeting is important and will take place in Prendergast Hall
from 9:00 am-10:00 am; at least one parent is required to attend. Children do not need to be present. Preschool
- grade 8 sessions will begin Sun. Oct. 4, at 9:30am.

between the hours of 9:00am-3:00pm.
For the convenience of parents who cannot make it during those hours the CMO will be open Thursday Sept.

Mission Appeal: 2015

Reverend Priestly Mathew, a missionary priest
from the Missionaries of Compassion will be
speaking in our parish in the weekend of September 19-20, 2015. This is our annual participation in the Mission Cooperation Plan for the
diocese of San Diego. Missionaries of Compassion has its exclusive purpose of assisting the
destitute, homeless, the aged, the disabled, the
children and the sick especially those who suffer from incurable diseases like leprosy, cancer
and aids etc. without distinction of caste,
creed, sex or nationality.
