9311 Macro ID introduction

The 9311 Macro ID is an ETSI UMTS Node B element which supports the Iub interface
and the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode.
The 9311 Macro ID is responsible for radio transmission/reception from/to one or more
cells to/from the User Equipment (UE).
The 9311 Macro ID provides:

The means of communication between a UE and a network using Transport Channels

Physical layer channels which are necessary to synchronize the downlink and also to
perform cell selection/reselection and handover preparation
Measurement information to the RNC for radio resource management (handover,
power control)

The 9311 Macro ID provides up to eight E1/T1 (only T1 for UMTS 850) with Inversion
Multiplexing ATM (IMA) or Drop and Insert capability (fractional E1/T1). The 9311
Macro ID also supports multi-PCM without IMA, IP, and Microwave Packet Radio
(MPR).
9311 Macro ID interfaces

The 9311 Macro ID provides the following interfaces:

Uu interface (UMTS User interface): this interface is used between the Node B and
the UE. It is dependent on the technology used on the radio (for example, it can be
W-CDMA or TD/CDMA).

Iub interface (Interface Node B): this interface lies between the RNC and the 9311
Macro ID. It allows to connect RNCs.

9311 Macro ID cabinet

The 9311 Macro ID cabinet is a single 600 mm-wide cabinet closed by one door. It is
designed for ease of manufacture, transportation, installation, system assembly, repair and
testing.
The 9311 Macro ID cabinet must be installed in an air conditioned environment.

Important! Precautions to be observed when plugging/unplugging the TRM Rx
connector

The TRM Rx connector (coaxpack) is very sensitive in the Node B design,

contributing to the global quality reception. It has therefore to be treated with care
when removed or replaced for maintenance purpose.
Ensure at any time its correct alignment with guides, the lock system being placed
on the left.
Ensure the lock system operates properly.
Do not apply force when inserting it.
Ensure a perfect straight angle with the TRM front panel.
If tie-raps are applied to secure the cable within the cabinet, ensure they are not
putting any constraint to that connector.

Important! The tightening torque of the front panel screws must be 0.25 N.m (0.2375
N.m to 0.2625 N.m).
The SMA tightening torque must be 0.8 N.m to 1.2 N.m.
Procedure

MCPA Firmware Conditional Download After MCPA Replacement

After an MCPA replacement (as well as during Node B initialization), the Node B
downloads a new firmware for certain types of MCPA modules.
Cajun MCPA download

The concerned MCPA modules are all MCPA 2100 modules (PEC: NTUM30AA), from
D4, E4, 01, and 02 hardware releases of Cajun type MCPA modules.
The Cajun designation identifies the first generation of UMTS MCPA modules deployed.
From now on, the firmware of these MCPA modules is automatically aligned to the
required version.
Downloading error at the OMC-B

After an MCPA replacement, the firmware of the replacing MCPA is upgraded for the
mentioned MCPA types. Most of the time, this firmware download is successful, and
allows to upgrade the Cajun MCPA module that has just been inserted without resetting
the Node B. But in some rare cases, the download attempt may result in a Downloading
Error and a minor alarm reporting to the OMC-B, with the following status:

Cause: Downloading Error

Equipment Type: MCPA

Perceived Severity: minor

This alarm is minor since the MCPA continues to be operational in its not upgraded
version. The Downloading Error cause has four sub-causes, that are described in the
following table.

NOTICE
Service-disruption hazard
This procedure will result in service disruption. Notify the OMC administrator of a
service outage before commencing.
Important! The personnel working on the cabinet must be authorized to work
according to the security standards.
Procedure
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Important! If you have to leave the site because it is not possible to obtain an MCA
backup file quickly, do not change the faulty MCA and disconnect the PCM cable
from the CCM front panel.
Important! Disconnection of the PCM cable is going to cause a service interruption
of the Node B.
Open the Node B door.

Three cases can occur:

Case 1: The CCM is not faulty and was not replaced. Go to step Step 3.

Case 2: The CCM has just been replaced. Go to step Step 14.

Case 3: During the first site intervention, the MCA backup file was necessary but
impossible to obtain quickly.
For this second intervention, make sure the coordinator sent you the most recent MCA
backup file. If you have a PC (TIL), store the file in the <default
path>/BTS@223.254.244/MCABackup folder. The number after the IC_APPROVED
prefix must be the same as the serial number of the Node B. Go to step Step 4.
Note: If the coordinator did not send you the MCA backup file and if it is impossible
to obtain it quickly, do not change the faulty MCA, disconnect the PCM cable from
the CCM front panel, leave the site and come back when you have the appropriate
MCA backup file.
