Cermets

Objective and development

The objective to combine the properties of ceramics, such as

hardness
resistance to oxidation
heat resistance
with the properties of metals, such as

toughness
impact strength

in order to create an ideal cutting material, produces cermets.

The first tungsten-carbide-free hard metal the first cermet was patented by PLANSEE in the year 1931 (inventors:
P. Schwarzkopf and J. Hirschl).
This alloy (TiC, Mo2C, Ni [Co,Cr]) was considerably more brittle than the cermets of today, demonstrating erratic
performance due to unsuitable conditions and processes of the time.

The goal of the subsequent development was to improve toughness whilst maintaining the positive wear properties.
This goal has been achieved, step by step, through many generations of cermet development.

Structure

The hard material components basically consist of titanium carbonitrides

with a high content of nitrogen and additional carbides of the WC group,
Ta(Nb)C, Mo2C, VC. The core - shell structure is typical of the hard
particles of cermets.
A metal binder phase of nickel or nickel-cobalt guarantees the desired
adhesion of the carbides, providing a stable grain composition and the
necessary toughness.
The most important hard element of the hard metal, namely tungsten
carbide, does not exist as free WC in the structure.

Microstructure of a modern cermet using

TCM10 as an example

Titanium carbonitrides are characterised by their high thermodynamic

stability and low tendency to bind with ferrous materials.
Essential advantages result from this fact.
Similar characteristics are demonstrated by certain coatings.
Advantages of these features are minimal diffusion and friction during
use.

Cermets

Production
Cermet production is not notably different from the production of hard metal.
The selected raw materials based on carbide, carbonitride and nitride are milled and spray dried in order to produce
a granulate that can be pressed.
The following pressing and sintering operations result in a compact and hard form. Further finishing operations
such as grinding, honing and coating then produce a ready for use indexable insert.

Compared to hard metal, powder preparation, pressing, sintering and grinding are more complex operations.
State-of-the-art processes and production plants represent the basis for high-quality cermets manufactured by
PLANSEE TIZIT.

Cermets
Basic conditions
Creating adequate basic conditions for cermet machining maximises
benefits and advantages.
1. Material
Satisfactory results can be expected with all steel materials (including stainless steels) and
ductile cast irons (nodular cast iron).
For grey cast irons no clear recommendation can be made.
The practical results demonstrate unpredictable performance.
The reasons for this are partly due to the condition of the cast blank but also to the special
structure of grey cast iron. Perlitic castings as well as those with a high ferrite content are not
particularly suitable for cermets.
In this situation notable improvement can be achieved with coated cermets.
Cermets are less suitable / not recommended for non ferrous metals (aluminium, brass, etc.),
heat resistant alloys (Inconel, etc.), titanium and hardened steels.
The upper limits of component hardness amount to approx. 52 - 54 HRC, above which
cutting edge stability becomes a factor in successful application.

2. Workpieces
The workpieces should have a minimum material allowance and be free of scale, cavities or
inclusions.
Severe interrupted cuts and unstable conditions make the application of cermets difficult.

12

3. Machine / workpiece clamping

High rigidity, which guarantees vibration-free machining, allows the potential of cermets to
be fully utilised.

4. Cutting data

ap

The example of turning shows that the

majority of cutting depths is below 1.5 mm.
The frequency of the optimum allowance of
0.5 mm is evident (one dot R corresponds
to one practical test).
The feed rates are concentrated in the area
of 0.1 0.25 mm/ rev.
Successful applications with cutting depths
and feed rates beyond specified are rather
unusual exceptions. With reference to
cutting speed, cermets are not particularly
sensitive.

With their low tendency to stick they are

suitable for both the low vc-range (e.g. with

Concerning the cutting speed, the material
used must be taken into consideration.
Information can be found in the tables of
cutting data values (pages 32-33).

5. Chip grooves
Due to their specific field of application cermets require adapted chip grooves and cutting
edge design that meet the specification required for successful cermet application.
A cutting edge only moderately honed together with a ground flank guarantee the necessary
edge quality for finishing. Fine chips are formed safely and evacuated without problems from
the cutting zone.

6. Machining methods
Cermets are suitable for machining methods in which relatively small chip sections are
evacuated, which can be due to the method itself or the selection of cutting parameters.

The tried and tested lever lock creates a safe connection
between insert and tool holder. Simply loosen the clamping
elements to be able to take the insert off the seat so that
then a new cutting edge can be used.
The insert has an inclination of 6 in the holder (axial and
radial) which creates the correct clearance angle for the
negative insert.
