EET2166 INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRICAL POWER AND MACHINES

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. This Question paper consists of 6 Questions only.
2. Attempt ALL questions. This is a group assignment. (maximum 3 person in a group)
3. Deadline of submission: 5.00 am, 17 AUG 2015 (Monday)
4. Submit hand-written answer booklet to Ms. SY Pang. (R2/021 or pigeon hole D10)
5. Marks will be deducted on daily basis for late submission.
6. Write your ID, Name and Tutorial Section on the front cover of the answer booklet (which
included in page 4).
7. Cheating or copying cases will be seriously penalized.

Question 1
(a) Draw the equivalent circuit diagrams of DC shunt motor and DC series motor and mark
all parameters and compare their speed-armature current characteristics. (9)
(b) If three single phase transformers rated 1000V/200 V 1.5 KVA are connected to form a
three phase delta- wye transformer, find the line voltage on the low voltage side and the
kVA rating of the three phase unit.

Question 2
(a) Draw a diagram showing the construction of a single phase transformer and explain the
principle operation. Derive the expression for induced emf.

(b) A4-pole DC generator has 400 lap-connected conductors in its armature. The flux per pole
is 20 mWb. The shunt field resistance is 100 . The armature resistance is 1 . A load of
10 is connected across the armature. The armature current is 10A. Draw the complete
circuit diagram and insert all parameter values. Calculate the induced emf terminal
voltage and load current.

Question 3
(a) A 400V,50 Hz, three phase balanced Y-connected source supplies power to a three phase
balanced Y-connected load with an impedance of (12+j16) /phase, through a 3-wire
line having an impedance of( 0.6+j1.2)/phase.

Draw the three phase circuit diagram of the system and indicate the parameter
values.

Draw the single phase equivalent circuit and indicate all the parameters.

Determine the line current and the total power consumed by the load.

(b) A 20 kVA,2000 V/500 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has the following parameters:
Primary winding: resistance 5 and reactance 12
Secondary winding: resistance 0.25 and reactance 0.5
The magnetizing branch may be neglected.

Draw the complete equivalent circuit and insert parameter values. (3)
Draw the equivalent circuit referred to the primary (2000V) side and insert
parameter values and calculate the equivalent winding impedance referred to the
primary.

Calculate the secondary load voltage at 0.8 p.f. lag with rated full load current.

Question 4
(a) A three phase balanced delta-connected load draws 120 kW at a power factor of 0.8 lag from
a three phase balanced 400V, 50 Hz supply.
(i) Draw the three phase equivalent circuit diagram.

(ii) Calculate the phase current and line current.

(iii)Calculate the reactive power and VA per phase.

(iv) Determine the resistance and reactance of each phase.

(b) A 10 kVA, 200V/1000V, 50 Hz single phase transformer gave the following test data:
Open circuit test (on primary, 200V side): 200 V, 1.5 A, 90 W
Short circuit test (on secondary, 1000V side): 50 V, 10 A, 120 W
(i) Draw the complete equivalent circuit referred to the low voltage side.

(ii) Determine the equivalent circuit parameters referred to primary, 200 V side. (6)

Question 5
(a) A 230 V DC shunt motor runs at no load at 1000 rpm. The field current is 2.3 A. The
back-emf at no load is 228 V. At full load it draws 90A.The armature resistance is 0.2 .

Draw the equivalent circuit and calculate the field resistance.


Calculate the current drawn from the supply at no load.
Calculate the back-emf at full load.
Calculate the speed at which it runs at full load.

Question 6
A 230 V DC shunt motor has a field resistance of 150 and an armature resistance of 16 .
The motor runs at 1000 rpm and draws a current of 100A from supply.

Calculate the field current and back-emf.

Calculate the additional resistance to be added to the field resistance to increase the
speed to 1200 rpm for the same current drawn from supply. Assume that the flux is
linearly proportional to field current.
