Question 1 :
1. Briefly state any one new technical thing that you learned from this video.
The efficiency of two step process of electricity production from fuels and then using this
electricity for driving electric car is more than twice than conventional ICengine cars which directly
use fuel to drive the car. Thus this fact provides electric cars edge over the conventional IC engine
cars despite the initial higher cost for electric cars.
2. Briefly state any one non-technical thing that you learned from this video.
In this video, Elon Musk emphasises on fact that it is recomended for a person to take a break after
a car journey of 120 miles; which aids the drawback of his company's Electric Car which requires
an hour to recharge completely which is far more than refilling of IC engine cars. He makes use of
the above fact and recommends customer to have a break of 20-30 min after 120 miles of journey,
so that they can recharge their car and refresh at a same time. Charging time of 20-30 mins is
enough as the electric car is capable of covering 250 miles at speed of 65 mph in one complete
discharge cylce of battery and thus 20-30 min of charging will provide battery enough power to
complete the next 120 miles easily.
3. Why do electric cars generally have aluminium body as opposed to IC engine cars?
Electric cars contains heavy battery pack to drive the car for a considerable distance (250 miles for
Tesla's Model S car at speed of 65mph). So having a heavy body like IC engine cars will decrease
its efficiency. As more heavier the system becomes, the load on the motor would increase and thus
decreasing its efficiency. Thus lighter aluminium body is used to compensate weight of the heavier
battery pack to maintain a good efficiency for the system.
4. What in your opinion is one critical point regarding Solar Energy, that was not mentioned
in the video?
Efficiecny of solar panels was not taken into account. We know that current technologies offer solar
panels with an efficiency of about 20% to 25% , which magnifies the amount of field required to
generate electricity compared to conventional fuel sources. I came across this information in an
article ,appeared in [1] which states thatCalifornias proposed Blythe plant will require a whopping 7,000 acres of Mohave Desert in order
to deliver 2,100 GWh per year. The area of a coal plant producing the same output will typically be
one square mile (640 acres) or less.
And another major problem with Solar Energy is continous availability.

Question 2:
1. Ceiling Fans: Split phase induction motor [2].
2. Hard-disk Drive: Brushless DC motor (spindle motor) [3][4].
3. Robotic Arm : Servo motors for precise position control [5][6].
4. Electric Scooter: BLDC motor [7].
5. Electric Trains: Nowadays AC induction motor are used. Traditionally series-wound brushed DC
motors were used [8].
