SPORTS UNIVERSITY
OF THE YEAR 2015
INTRODUCTION
ABOUT DUEM
Durham University Electric Motorsport (DUEM) is a team of students who design,
build and race cutting edge electric cars. DUEM are currently building their most
ambitious solar powered car yet for entry into the 2015 World Solar Challenge.
This car features a highly aerodynamically and structurally optimised
monocoque chassis, the second generation of the in-wheel motor designed by
the team and 392 silicon solar cells with an efficiency of 22.8%.!
The team consists of over 40 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying
a broad range of degrees including engineering, physics, mathematics, biology,
business and economics. DUEM projects are entirely extra-curricular, and the
leadership and direction of the team is the responsibility of the students. Whilst
we receive technical assistance from the School of Engineering and Computing
Sciences and the Business School, we are required to raise a significant portion
of our budget with external support so our sponsors are very important to us!!
OUR VISION
Our aim this year is to complete the manufacture of our first brand new solar car
since DUSC01 back in 2004. Our aim is to finish in the top ten in the 2015 World
Solar Challenge. We want to promote renewable energy technologies and
showcase British science and technology at home and on the international stage.
We have a proven track record of remaining competitive against big-budget
teams whilst only having a fraction of the resources. In the past we have made
our own motor controller and have even encapsulated our own solar cells. In the
process the team has developed technical expertise and knowledge, with several
previous team members now employed by companies such as McLaren, RollsRoyce and Force India.
Our long-term vision is to become the world wide number one solar car team, but
also to offer developments unique to our car. For example, our team has
developed an in-wheel electric motor and excellent aerodynamic analysis and
development capabilities.
OUR PROJECTS
SOLAR CAR
DUEM will enter the World Solar Challenge (WSC) in
392 SILICON
October 2015 with a brand new Solar Car. The World Solar
SOLAR
CELLS
Challenge is an arduous 3000 km endurance event held
biennially in Australia. Solar car teams from across the
globe race against each other to be the first car to cover the distance from
Darwin to Adelaide. DUEM will be up against teams from some of the best
universities in the world, most of which have a multi million-dollar budget.
Long distance solar car events are a unique challenge and require a car that is
highly efficient, extremely reliable and able to cruise as fast as the speed limit
allows. !
This will be our first completely new solar car since our original car
constructed in 2004. The car is currently under construction, and will feature
the following main components:!
392 silicon solar cells of over 22.8% efficiency covering the top surface
of the car!
MAX MOTOR
POWER: 5KW
The aerodynamic shape of the car is essential to our success. Aerodynamic drag
has been minimised by utilising state of the art computational fluid dynamics
software available in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. Since
the car will spend a large proportion of the
TOP SPEED: 108 KPH !
race cruising at relatively constant speeds,
overcoming the aerodynamic drag is the
largest expenditure of energy. Given the
relatively small amount of energy available
to power the car from the sun (about the
same as a kettle!), minimising drag and
maximising efficiency is essential.

FORMULA STUDENT
Durham University Formula Student was formed in late 2010 by a group of
students from the universitys engineering society as an extra-curricular project.
The team soon grew in size as more and more students came to be part of this
famous competition, with the universitys prestigious Centre for Automotive
Research becoming a key academic partner for the team. !
Since then the team has gone from strength to strength, entering the design
competition in July 2012, 2013 and 2014. In its first year at the competition the
team finished in 5th place out of the UK teams (7th overall), meaning they were
the highest placed new team and also the highest
HIGHEST PLACED placed team that did not also have a team in the
NEW TEAM 2012 Class 1 competition.!
SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES
