Installation
Base Transceiver Station Equipment
1 Introduction
The CE and UL declaration of conformity for the product will be fulfilled if the setup and
cabling is undertaken in accordance with the specification in the manual and the documentation listed there, such as mounting instructions, cable lists etc.Where necessary,
project-specific documentation should be taken into account.
Deviations from the specifications or independent changes during setup, such as use of
cable types with lower screening values, for example, can lead to the CE requirements
being violated. In such cases the CE declaration of conformity is invalidated and the responsibility passes to the person who has caused the deviations.

Features overview
The BS-240 Compact is designed for max. 24 carriers in 3 racks plus 1 Energy Station
Rack, 1 Battery Backup Rack, 1 Service Rack which provide modular Energy Station
(redundancy N+1), modular Battery Back Up with one to three battery modules, communication equipment (radio links, separate access for 2 Mbit/s line, etc.), double active air
conditioning with free cooling (1+1 redundancy). Antennas pole can be directly assembled to the Cabinet.
Up to 6 cells per rack and up to 12 cells can be supported. Special case is the feature
'concentric cell', one cell with 2 supply areas (inner and complete area). This feature can
be used in omnicells as well as in multicells with sectors.
The following combining options are supported:
antenna combining with duplexers (DUAMCO) can be applied for 2, 4 and 8 carriers.
RF amplifier and multicoupler for the RX path are integrated
antenna combining with Filter Combiners (FICOM) is possible for up to 8 carriers
onto one TX antenna
cascading of multicoupler equipment (DIAMCO) is possible for up to 24 carriers
High Power Duplexer (HPDU) for reduction of the necessary numbers of antennas
in case of FICOM per cell for up to 8 carriers can be applied
Traffic Channels:
Full-Rate (FR)
Half-Rate (HR)
Enhanced Full-Rate (EFR)
Services:
GPRS
HSCSD
Frequency Hopping:
Baseband
Synthesizer
Redundancy:
AC/DC n+1 redundancy
AC/DC Converters work in load sharing, but n AC/DC are able to supply the whole
BS-240 Compact.
Fan panel (energy station)
Four fans are equipped in the modular energy station which provide 3+1 redundancy.
Air conditioning system (1+1 redundancy)
Double active air conditioning with only one unit and the redundancy is the free cooling.
CORE redundancy is already implemented from the HW point of view but it will be
managed by the BR6.0 software.
Abis Configurations: star, multidrop, loop and cross connect function.
Change of PCM line configuration from star to multidrop or loop and vice versa is possible without any interruption of service.

2 BS-240C Installation
Compact Site is suitable for fast installation in narrow places. It may be equipped with
up to a maximum of 3 standard BTS-240 racks (BS-240 Base Transceiver Stations) and
can be configured, on customer request, with up to a maximum of 24 carriers. For installation of equipment not supplied by Siemens (battery chargers, antennas, power supplies, microwave etc.) refer to site specific documentation or vendor instructions
provided with other equipment.
The dimensions of the cabinet housing the station allows to install the Compact site virtually anywhere: town streets, rural locations, building roofs and rough ground without
causing any environmental damage.
Due to its reduced size and weight, the station can be transferred by a medium-capacity
industrial vehicle, without any special equipment. When it is installed on a roofs or hardly
reachable locations, its standard installation procedure foresees its lifting (by means of
a crane) with a suitable straddle.

Site Requirements
Before starting with the installation, the site must be prepared as follows:
The site-specific base construction must have been mounted
The installation area should be clear of standing water, fallen leaves, mud and
building debris
Measures should be taken to avoid unauthorized access
The lightning protection and grounding systems must be complete
All installation works off 230 Vac 1 phase or 400Vac 3 phases, power supply must
be finished.
The BS-240 Compact Site has to be mounted, after all other works to create the required
infrastructure (antenna system cabling, E1 Links cabling, Power Supply Cabling and External Alarms cabling) have been completed.

Environmental Conditions
The location of a site may directly affect the correct operation of the Compact Site. The
following recommendations should be considered:
Sites located on tall buildings provide cleaner environments for both the general enclosure and the cooling system intakes/exhaust.
Installation under trees and foliage is not recommended due to the increased levels
of insects and leaves etc. which may be drawn into the cooling system by the fans
and could block the air stream.
Sites located close to excessive airborne dust i.e. cement, coal deposits etc. should
also be minimized in order to avoid contamination of the cooling system and increased maintenance.
Installation on coastal sites should not have air intakes facing directly into prevailing
sea winds or spray in order to minimize corrosion. The preferred orientation is with
the rear panels facing sea winds or spray. This will both reduce the intake of airborne
sand and spray into the cooling system and also allow the doors to be opened without detrimental effects on the internal equipment. Anyway coastal sites which are at
less than 1 mile from the water line should be minimized if possible.
Temperature range is -33C...+45C
The product has been evaluated for protection against water splashing the enclosure
from any direction and for ingress protection according to IP 55 (EN60529).

On the digital side there is an extension of the CC links (connection between Core Backplane and the CUs not housed in the Base Rack) and the CAN Bus. The CAN Bus connection strongly depends on the number of Extension Racks present.
On the RF side there is an extension in the RX path only for omni and specific sector
cell (e.g. 5/5/5) configurations and diversity reception with more than 8 TRX. Thus max.
2 RF cables (cascading) is connected between two racks.
There is no TX combining over rack borders thus the TRXs of different racks is combined on air only. Some configurations are not possible with 2 racks only e.g. 5/5/5 with
FICOM because of the number of available ACOM slots.
On the other side of the BS-240C outdoor cabinet 3 racks are visible (1 Service Rack, 1
Energy Station Rack and 1 Battery Rack) which provide modular Energy Station (redundancy N+1), modular Battery Backup with one to three battery systems (each system
contains 8 X 6V batteries), communication equipment (radio links, separate access for
2 Mbit/s line, etc.) as shown in Fig. 2.6.

Ground connection
The Compact Site is provided in the external, in the both the frontal sides, for a bolt (steel
inox) for the connection with the place ground (surge tank). The bolt is joined at the base
and located in the bottom (see Fig. 2.18).
To connect the Compact Site to the ground system proceed as follows:
Use the nearest connection point of the ground system.
Check the distance between the connection point of the ground system and the
ground bolt of the shelter.
Cut the cable to the required length.
Remove the cable covering at the end to connect to the ground bolt and fix a double
crimped cable end to the ground bolt.
Tighten the nut firmly.

Antenna Connections
The BTSE has to be connected to the transmit and receive antennas. The antenna configuration and the required cabling are dependent on the site and the type of combining.
For detailed information refer to the site-specific documentation or use the corresponding customer documents.
For installation and service purposes it is useful to know, which hardware is connected
to which cell. The numbering, seen from the top of the antenna pole, starts at an
azimuth angle of 0 (north) and rotates clockwise.
The first existing cell whose beam centre line lies at 0 or more, is defined as
cell 0 or sector 0. The next one following in the same direction cell is cell 1 etc.
In case of omni cell the cell no. is 0.

Jumper cable available into the cabinet have to be used to connect the Tx/Rx antenna
feeder.
In the lateral side of the Compact Site there are the presetting for the input of the cables
of antenna by the pond passerby watertight, type ROX.
Fig. 2.36
The cables in the input from the antennas, must be inserted from the lateral flange of the
input located in the lateral panels. From the input of the cables must be made the following operations:
Remove the flanges of the external protection, by removing the six screw of closing
for each flange.
Remove the plugs who form the trimmings of the passing.
Remove the layers to obtain the right section, suitable for the diameter of the cable
employed.
Reassemble the plugs with the cable inserted.
Reassemble the external flange.

A maximum number of 3 sets of batteries can be installed in the cabinet (see Fig. 2.41).
Each set contains eight batteries 180Ah/48V (each of them 6V, supplier TUDOR or FIAMM) and it is delivered with the relevant cables. Please also refer to Fig. 2.42 and
Fig. 2.39.
To avoid excessive battery discharge the battery charger disconnects the batteries from
the load when the voltage is 42V(This switching function is performed by power relays
(LVD)).The battery are charged and supervised by AC/DC System.

Unpacking
Once the batteries and all electrical connections accessories have been unpacked, before to start the installation, please verify the presence of all the particulars, and control
the absence of any crushing or damage. The airtight batteries are delivered filled with
acid, ready to be installed. It is not requested any preliminary conditioning operation of
the batteries.
If it is not possible to install immediately the batteries, please keep the batteries in clean,
fresh and humidity free stockyards.

Connect in sequence the positive and negative endpoints of the batteries, taking
particular care to start the installation from the lower portion of the batteries rack.
The flexible cord connections between the different shelves must be introduced as last
operation, in order to avoid the possibility of casual electrical contacts.
To implement an electrical contact of the best quality between the different batteries
blocks, please use a dynamometer key with a grip couple of 6,5-7 Nm. The polarity of
the connection has to be checked.
The correct procedure is to check through a voltmeter the total voltage, and to verify that
this measurement is equal to the open circuit voltage of a singular battery element multiplied for the elements number.
The last operation to be executed is to connect the batteries main positive clump to the
power station positive clump, and the batteries negative clump to the related fuse-carrier, using the battery cables present inside the battery rack.
Put the protections on the clumps, after the connections already done have been
checked.
We can label each battery with a progressive number; the battery labelled 1 is the
battery connected to the + (positive) main line while the last battery is the battery connected to the - (negative) main line.

The 2Mb/s PCM connections can be realized also through radio links or optical fiber
technology. In this situation the radio link or the line terminal are chosen by SIEMENS
on customer specific requests.
In the example reported here it is proposed the SRAL radio link, that actually is available
as composed by two different systems: the former, called IDU, is installed inside the
Compact Site, the latter, called ODU, is positioned outside and is installed directly on
the duplexer, according to the operations specified in the SRAL installation manual.

IF cables
If the Compact Site is installed in a fully equipped configuration, the 12 IF cables cannot
enter from the lateral side of the cabinet as shown in Fig. 2.47. In this case the hole provided at the bottom side of the cabinet must be used for the IF cables.
Fig. 2.47
IF cables
As it is not possible to fix the IF cables to the cabinet as indicated by the GSM specification, the IF cables are to be inserted in a raceway (lateral side of the cabinet - 100x35IMC 3018VIPA) loom wrinkled (diameter 22) must be used, between the raceway and
the input at the service cupboard of the Cabinet. In this cupboard the cables go up in the
left side until reach the support cables in/out (C50117-A201-B19) fixed at the cupboard.
A suitable sealing substance is to be used in order to obtain a waterproof connection of
the IF cables.
