Installation
Base Transceiver Station Equipment

1 Introduction
The CE and UL declaration of conformity for the product will be fulfilled if the setup and
cabling is undertaken in accordance with the specification in the manual and the documentation listed there, such as mounting instructions, cable lists etc.Where necessary,
project-specific documentation should be taken into account.
Deviations from the specifications or independent changes during setup, such as use of
cable types with lower screening values, for example, can lead to the CE requirements
being violated. In such cases the CE declaration of conformity is invalidated and the responsibility passes to the person who has caused the deviations.

2 BS-240C Installation
Compact Site is suitable for fast installation in narrow places. It may be equipped with
up to a maximum of 3 standard BTS-240 racks (BS-240 Base Transceiver Stations) and
can be configured, on customer request, with up to a maximum of 24 carriers. For installation of equipment not supplied by Siemens (battery chargers, antennas, power supplies, microwave etc.) refer to site specific documentation or vendor instructions
provided with other equipment.
The dimensions of the cabinet housing the station allows to install the Compact site virtually anywhere: town streets, rural locations, building roofs and rough ground without
causing any environmental damage.
Due to its reduced size and weight, the station can be transferred by a medium-capacity
industrial vehicle, without any special equipment. When it is installed on a roofs or hardly
reachable locations, its standard installation procedure foresees its lifting (by means of
a crane) with a suitable straddle.

Environmental Conditions
The location of a site may directly affect the correct operation of the Compact Site. The
following recommendations should be considered:
Sites located on tall buildings provide cleaner environments for both the general enclosure and the cooling system intakes/exhaust.
Installation under trees and foliage is not recommended due to the increased levels
of insects and leaves etc. which may be drawn into the cooling system by the fans
and could block the air stream.
Sites located close to excessive airborne dust i.e. cement, coal deposits etc. should
also be minimized in order to avoid contamination of the cooling system and increased maintenance.
Installation on coastal sites should not have air intakes facing directly into prevailing
sea winds or spray in order to minimize corrosion. The preferred orientation is with
the rear panels facing sea winds or spray. This will both reduce the intake of airborne
sand and spray into the cooling system and also allow the doors to be opened without detrimental effects on the internal equipment. Anyway coastal sites which are at
less than 1 mile from the water line should be minimized if possible.
Temperature range is -33C...+45C
The product has been evaluated for protection against water splashing the enclosure
from any direction and for ingress protection according to IP 55 (EN60529).

On the digital side there is an extension of the CC links (connection between Core Backplane and the CUs not housed in the Base Rack) and the CAN Bus. The CAN Bus connection strongly depends on the number of Extension Racks present.
On the RF side there is an extension in the RX path only for omni and specific sector
cell (e.g. 5/5/5) configurations and diversity reception with more than 8 TRX. Thus max.
2 RF cables (cascading) is connected between two racks.
There is no TX combining over rack borders thus the TRXs of different racks is combined on air only. Some configurations are not possible with 2 racks only e.g. 5/5/5 with
FICOM because of the number of available ACOM slots.
On the other side of the BS-240C outdoor cabinet 3 racks are visible (1 Service Rack, 1
Energy Station Rack and 1 Battery Rack) which provide modular Energy Station (redundancy N+1), modular Battery Backup with one to three battery systems (each system
contains 8 X 6V batteries), communication equipment (radio links, separate access for
2 Mbit/s line, etc.) as shown in Fig. 2.6.

Raw Land site installation

The work to build up a row land site for the BS-240-C consists in the realization of the
plate of a foundation substructure, with the necessary dimensions, which is employed
as the base of the Cabinet. Before of lay the platform on, as indicated in the executive
project, four wrinkled tubes must be installed at the position on the plate. The tubes must
be of heavy type, 32 mm of diameter (for the location of the ground cables) and of two
tubes of the diameter of 63 mm (for the location of power supply cables and of the PCM
flows). The tubes which contain the ground cables must be ended in the nearest hole of
the grounding system; the tubes which contain the power supply cables and the PCM
flows must be ended in the hole in the nearness.
Fence the selected area and provide it with a gate. Level and prepare the area to receive
the support platform.
It will be opportune to get ready the soil to allow the admission of the truck and other
means of transport employed for the unload of the Cabinet.

Abis-Interface - PCM Link Terminal

The E1 links related to the Iub interface available in the Compact Site provide the communication links to the BSC. The E1 interfaces are connected and terminated with
Overvoltage Protection (OVPT) that is performed by gas filled surge arrestors and is located outside the EMI shield in order to deflect the over voltage before it enters the EMI
protected area inside the Compact Site.
The OVPT contains clamp blocks to connect the 2Mb/s cable and protection cover. Two
types of OVPT exist:
OVPTCOAX for up to 6 coaxial 2Mb/s lines (75 ohm impedance), with 1,0/2,3 coaxial connector.
OVPT120 for up to 6 symmetrical 2Mb/s lines (120 ohm impedance), with terminal
block connector.
Depending on the different cable impedance it is required to use:
Coaxial cables 75ohm (e.g. cable 2YCCY 0.4/2.6) with 75 ohm 1.0/2.3 J Male connectors
Twisted shielded pair cables 120 ohm (e.g. cable S-09YS(ST)CY 4x2x0.6/1.2)
The maximum cable length depends on the attenuation of the cable, in order to fulfill the
requirements of minimum voltage levels to be provided at E1 interface according to
PCM standards.
The cabling shielding must be connected to the relevant ground pins as close as possible (in order to avoid EMC/RF interfering aspects).

2.7.3.1

Abis-Interface for 120 Ohm Cable Impedance

Connect the E1 links with twisted pair cable to the OVPT 120 Ohm as follows:
Cut the cable to the required length and cut back the outer insulation (approx. 12cm).
Remove the wire insulation (8mm).
Wrap the exposed cable screen, which will be fixed at the strain relieving.
Fix the prepared cable close to the strain relieving by straps.
Insert the wires into the terminals of the OVPT
Insert the additional wire (shielding potential) into one of the ground terminals (e.g.n
24)
Lead the additional wire and the uplink and downlink wires on the shortest route
(that means without sleeves) between the stress relieving and the terminals.
All unconnected PCM lines (4 wires per line) must be connected to one of the ground
terminal
It is advantageous to protect the short part of the cable between stress relieving and terminal block with a shrink tube or adhesive tape, excepted the cable screen.

Alarms Distributor Cabling

The access for cabling from external signal sensors on site is the External Alarm Protection EAP located on the Compact Cabling Access Panel and outside the EMI shield
in order to deflect the overvoltage before the alarms enter the EMI protected area inside
the Compact Site.
External Alarms cabling requires a pairs shielded cable (e.g. SY(ST)Y 10x2x0,6) with a
a SUB-D37 Male connector on the EAP side. The alarms collected by the EAP are transferred to the Alarm Collection Board (see Fig. 2.30) that provide to collects the external
and internal alarms (power station alarms, shelter alarms, etc.)

Fig. 2.30

2.7.4.1

Alarm Distributor (ADI)

BS-240 Alarms Interfaces

The ACTM alarm interface is installed at the top side of the BS-240 Base Rack. The
ACTM collects the external alarms coming from the ADI and from the COBA via CAN
bus. Two lines for each alarm are connected to the ACTM: the P line is the signal line
and it is connected to the VCC by means of a pull up resistance, the M line is connected
to the ground.
The ADI board sends these signalling to the BS-240 where the internal alarms of the
Compact Site are grouped.
The following grouping exists on the ADI:
Shelter alarms
Open door
Smoke
Temperature
Energy station
Conditioner 1 and 2 fault
Microwave
AC lightning Protection on the 220 Vac line

Antenna Connections
The BTSE has to be connected to the transmit and receive antennas. The antenna configuration and the required cabling are dependent on the site and the type of combining.
For detailed information refer to the site-specific documentation or use the corresponding customer documents.
For installation and service purposes it is useful to know, which hardware is connected
to which cell. The numbering, seen from the top of the antenna pole, starts at an
azimuth angle of 0 (north) and rotates clockwise.
The first existing cell whose beam centre line lies at 0 or more, is defined as
cell 0 or sector 0. The next one following in the same direction cell is cell 1 etc.
In case of omni cell the cell no. is 0.

Clean the batteries with a downy and dry cloth.

Dont use cleaners or materials with solvents.

Sandpaper lightly the clamps with fine-grained rubbing paper. Dont use iron brush.
Spread the clamp with a light film of soap grease.
Connect the backup batteries according to the following procedure:
Switch-off the relevant fuse breaker at DC panel (see Fig. 2.40).
Put the batteries in the battery tray.

Connect in sequence the positive and negative endpoints of the batteries, taking
particular care to start the installation from the lower portion of the batteries rack.
The flexible cord connections between the different shelves must be introduced as last
operation, in order to avoid the possibility of casual electrical contacts.
To implement an electrical contact of the best quality between the different batteries
blocks, please use a dynamometer key with a grip couple of 6,5-7 Nm. The polarity of
the connection has to be checked.
The correct procedure is to check through a voltmeter the total voltage, and to verify that
this measurement is equal to the open circuit voltage of a singular battery element multiplied for the elements number.
The last operation to be executed is to connect the batteries main positive clump to the
power station positive clump, and the batteries negative clump to the related fuse-carrier, using the battery cables present inside the battery rack.
Put the protections on the clumps, after the connections already done have been
checked.
We can label each battery with a progressive number; the battery labelled 1 is the
battery connected to the + (positive) main line while the last battery is the battery connected to the - (negative) main line.

Installation of Link Equipment

The link equipment acts as front end to provide the E1 2Mb/s interface. Different equipment can be used for wire or radio transmission. Which equipment will be used depends
on customer requirements. If the customer has any link equipment at it is telecommunication site, possibly no link equipment is necessary. Also direct connection of 2 Mb/s
links are possible.
Available space into the shelter is 18 HU. Six is the maximum number of Link Equipment
that is possible to install into shelter (e.g. MicroWave SRAL, one SRAL=2HU) because
six power lines and six breakers (Breaker nominal current = 6A) are installed.

Fig. 2.43

Microwave breakers and DC terminals on DC Panel

A Digital Distributor Frame (DDF) can be installed as an interface between the network
and the link equipment. It is possible to install link equipment in mixed configuration. The
mounting kit and the cabling of the link equipment to be provided.

The installation of the link equipment always is to start on the bottom. The cover of not
used HUs must be left.
Internal Cabling for the LE (SRA-L) require kit including the following:
Power Supply cables between the Breakers and the DC Input of LE:
IF lines between the RF Interface Panel located in the SCAP and IDU.
E1 links cables between the OVPT and the PCM IN/OUT of LE.

SRAL
The 2Mb/s PCM connections can be realized also through radio links or optical fiber
technology. In this situation the radio link or the line terminal are chosen by SIEMENS
on customer specific requests.
In the example reported here it is proposed the SRAL radio link, that actually is available
as composed by two different systems: the former, called IDU, is installed inside the
Compact Site, the latter, called ODU, is positioned outside and is installed directly on
the duplexer, according to the operations specified in the SRAL installation manual.

2.8.3.1

Microwave Radio Link Connection (SRAL)

The SRAL consists of two different equipment:
IDU: contained into the Compact Site,
ODU: external mounted with the antenna.
The number of IDU, ODU and antennas used is strictly in relation with the PCM configuration that will be used.
In Fig. 2.44 is indicated the structure of an IDU system, with the evidence of the unit
devoted to PCM connections to the different BTSs through the OVPT board, and the
board that has to be connected to the ODU (called RTM unit).

IDU /ODU RF Connections

The connection between the IDU (Internal Device Unit) inside the shelter and the ODU
(Outdoor Device Unit) is implemented by:
a SMA/N female (314-325/70) 1m cable which is connected to the IDU on the side
SMA. The side N must be fixed to the shelter.
on the outdoor side of the shelter the connection to the ODU can be realized by
means of 50 Ohm cable (104-009/10). On the ODU side a 90 N male connector
(421-008/23) is to be used. On the shelter side a N male connector (421-008/23) is
to be used.
As the complete radio bridge (IDU + ODU) is equipped on site by skilled personnel, the
rules described in this chapter are intended as suggestions. The only mandatory rule is
that the RF cable must be the one indicated in this chapter.
Anyway the possibility to connect this cable to the ground bar on the lateral side of the
shelter as per the antenna cables must be verified.
Lets suppose to have a SRAL configuration with 2 redundant or separate lines, the system must be equipped with two different ODU equipment, each of them must have its
own antenna and two different connections to IDU. Furthermore, the IDU must be
equipped with 2 BB-MODEM 4x2 Mb/s units.

2.8.3.3

IDU Power Supply (48 V)

The primary power supply (48 V) of the two IDU equipment which can be installed in the
Compact Site is provided by the Energy Station by means of two different connections.
The power supply of the ODU equipment is provided by the IDU on RF connection cables.

2.8.3.4

IDU Alarm Interface to the BTS

Each one of the two IDU equipment has a summarized alarm which is sent to the BTS.
The two alarms are so called SRAL0 and SRAL1 (or microW0 and microW1).
All the alarms which include also these alarms are sent on the Abis interface

IF cables
If the Compact Site is installed in a fully equipped configuration, the 12 IF cables cannot
enter from the lateral side of the cabinet as shown in Fig. 2.47. In this case the hole provided at the bottom side of the cabinet must be used for the IF cables.

Fig. 2.47

IF cables

As it is not possible to fix the IF cables to the cabinet as indicated by the GSM specification, the IF cables are to be inserted in a raceway (lateral side of the cabinet - 100x35IMC 3018VIPA) loom wrinkled (diameter 22) must be used, between the raceway and
the input at the service cupboard of the Cabinet. In this cupboard the cables go up in the
left side until reach the support cables in/out (C50117-A201-B19) fixed at the cupboard.
A suitable sealing substance is to be used in order to obtain a waterproof connection of
the IF cables.
