Considerations for challenging environments

Waterproof lighting | Considerations for challenging environments

Tough challenges met

Understanding the issues

When you operate in a demanding environment you need

a lighting solution that is dependable and suits your needs.
At Philips, we specialise in bright lighting solutions that are
controllable, low maintenance and will also help reduce your
carbon footprint. Were familiar with the lighting challenges
faced by companies running lighting 24/7 and can advise on
energy efficient solutions. We know about tough places like
factory floors, hygienic environments like food preparation
and those that combine both factors, like steamy kitchens.

You want to keep your production line producing, so the last

thing you want is to waste time and money shutting down for
maintenance. Enter the new generation of long life lamps and
controllable lighting solutions. You need the right closed cover
solution for safety or hygiene. No problem with our waterproof
range of fluorescents and LEDs. Whatever your environment,
you want to know that your lighting will still work, so you have
one less thing to worry about and you can concentrate on your
core business.

to bad behaviour

Waterproof lighting | Robust lighting solutions

Demanding places

Strategic solutions

Tough environments, places that are susceptible to vandalism,

open to the elements or simply require safe, effective lighting
at all times of the day. All spaces that present distinct challenges,
all environments open for improvement. Train platforms,
underground car parks, walkways all have their own issues,
but equally they offer opportunities for energy and cost
savings along with their more obvious and demanding
lighting requirements.

Whatever your needs, we can help you adopt a sustainable

lighting strategy that will allow you to create safer environments,
plus make best use of energy through controllable lighting, for
example by harvesting existing light using daylight linking. By
adopting a sustainable solution you can reduce maintenance
and reduce your carbon footprint, whilst also adopting robust
and reliable products and controls.

Prisma Lielahti, Finland

Prisma Lielahti
Tampere, Finland

When Prisma, part of the Finnish retailing co-operative

S Group decided to open their sixth store in Lielahti,
they realised that with 30,000 co-op members living in
the stores vicinity, accessible and easy parking would be
vital to its success. The underground car park that serves
the store has 600 spaces in its sizeable 20,000m2 area
roughly half of the floor area of the entire shopping
centre complex. Having initially considered LED tubes
as replacements for less energy efficient fluorescents,
Prisma changed their specification after witnessing the
superior luminosity of Philips LED luminaires in another
underground car park. In total, 550 Pacific LED light
fittings were installed. Cold and damp resistant, they
have an IP66 rating, making them suitable for even more
demanding conditions than their use here. Tommi Terho,
Property Manager for Prisma Lielahti comments:
Not one of the light fittings has developed a fault and
none have had to be changed. Performance is as reliable
as Id hoped.

Bio Planet, Leuven, Belgium

Bio Planet
Leuven, Belgium

Tamara de Ridder, Marketing Manager for Bio-Planet sums

this project up perfectly: With the Green Supermarket concept,
Philips fits in seamlessly with Bio-Planets green philosophy. It is
a clever selection of environmentally friendly and cost-effective
lighting solutions, as well as being customer-friendly.
Bio-Planet is an appropriate name for Belgiums greenest
supermarket. Stores are known for their extensive selection
of organic and green products, but their environmental
awareness doesnt stop there. Opening a new branch in
Leuven gave them the perfect opportunity to specify the
most durable and energy-saving materials. Customers see
the effect of the Green Supermarket concept all around
when shopping. At the entrance Philips LuxSpace downlights
fitted with phosphor LEDs create an inviting ambiance, saving
50% more energy compared with usual energy saving lamps.
The use of the robust, waterproof Pacific LED armature in
the fruit and vegetable department highlights Bio-Planets
innovative approach. Apart from their economical and
efficient illumination, LEDs also benefit from higher light
output in colder areas.
