5.2 Stability control method

NB: the following stability analysis methods are based on experience of projects with classical PVD+preloading. Those
might be applied for vacuum consolidation, but behavior of inclinometers nearby vacuum area is greatly affected by
vacuum pumping => interpretation should be subject to initial calibrating of anticipated displacements values and
comparison with inclinometers at the borders of PVD + prealoding areas. (see section 5.6)

5.2.1 Matsuo-Kawamura method (S - /S method)

This method is derived from the consideration that the relationship between settlement quantity () on the central
part of banking and / (: horizontal displacement quantity on banking slope) is shown on a curve (standard
line of destruction).
Measurement values are plotted on the graph of - / to check the proximity against standard line of
destruction. This method can show stable status or unstable status shown in Fig.5.

and are measured based on Matsuo - Kawamuras theory. Measured values are plotted like pic 3.2.2.
Standard line (E) is made by values of and at early stage with small loading of embankment.
If measurement values are plotted in upward direction form line D, status is in danger because horizontal
displacement is larger than settlement. In case that values are plotted in downward direction, it also in danger if
/ is increased dramatically.

5.2.3 Kurihara method(/t - t method)

Maximum value of displacement rate per day ( / t) is considered as the most important factor for
determination of stability. But Kurihara and Ichimoto selected / t <= 2cm/day as a factor for stability control.
