God Knows The Difference!!!

2 Samuel 12
1-
And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were
two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.
2-
The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:
3-
But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe (e-way) lamb, which he had bought and
nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat,
(food) and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom,(arms) and was unto him as a daughter.

Notes: Now can you imagine how Nathan must have felt being ordered by God to do this? We as

Christians must be spiritually discipline. It’s easy to forget that it’s the discipline we didn’t see ,

in David and others that made their most gifted musicians and singers be the best at what they

did. Nathan must have been a well disciplined prophet of God. Because As a Prophet, Nathan

was required to confront sin, even the sin of the King. It took great courage, skill, and tact to

speak to David in a way that would make him aware of his wrong actions. When you have to

confront someone with unpleasant news it’s not always easy. We must pray for courage, skill,

and tact. If you want that person to respond constructively, think through what you are going to

say. Season your words with wisdom. Ask God to give you the words to say and how to say it.

What surprise it is for us to see that David would justify himself as the judge of the entire

situation! What irony that he still speaks on behalf of the poor man when he has in fact switched

places and has become the rich man who has committed theft and murder of the poor man’s

daughter (v.3)!

Was he not the poor man once, who was persecuted throughout a portion of his life? Had he

forgotten about being a little shepherd boy out in the fields? Has he forgot having to run away

from King Saul to keep him from killing him. I believe as I read (1 Samuel 20) the trials David

met with, prepared him for future advancement.

2

Thus the Lord deals with those whom he prepares unto glory. Those whom has the anointing in

them and is waiting for the right moment to allow that anointing to burst forth. That child to be

born. Wow!!!

And now we ask “who is the poor man instead? Uriah, the obedient servant who is poor in

comparison to the rich king David. Look at the LORD’s proclamation of David’s wealth

provided by the LORD in v.7-9 – David was delivered consistently; he was anointed as king over

Israel; he was given Saul’s house, given Saul’s wives, given the house of Israel and Judah – as if

this were insufficient, the LORD continues, “I would add to you as much more”! You didn’t

have to do this David. You became weak and listen to the wrong voice. (v.8) Do these words not

echo the same words spoken to man in Matthew 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of

the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe

you, O ye of little faith?

And also to Adam? Adam was given the kingdom of heaven and earth to rule over it! He was

made in the image of God! He was taken from the dust outside of the Garden (Genesis 2:7) and

was gracefully given all the riches of the house of Eden, all the trees, all the fruit, all kingship

over the creatures and even his counter-part, the woman. What would drive him to desire the

one thing, the fruit of the tree of good and evil? (David desired that one thing that did not belong

to him). Yet, this is the mystery of sin – the shock and awe of understanding that sin is not

something natural to us. It should not be natural to us – because we are given all these riches, the

entire kingdom of God for us to inherit. This is the important par-a-dugm shift we need to

receive, that the world is not our oyster, because it pales so significantly to the riches provided

through Christ Jesus. Do you feel the tug of materialistic pleasures?

Do you feel the desire to speak half-truths so to present the gospel in a ‘likeable’ and

‘acceptable’, or perhaps even ’sensible and reasonable’ manner? Then you have stolen that little
3

lamb from the poor man. You are the man! (v.7) – You are Adam, who would exchange the

poverty of this world for the riches which you already have. You would rather take a poor man’s

possession rather than recognize the new creation which we inherit. What of the loyal wife, the

church? What of the golden streets of New Jerusalem? What of the unadulterated, unsaturated

purity of the gospel which is beyond sensibility, beyond mere acceptance of the world’s

standards but by far the most outrageous truth this world can ever truly be shocked and awed

by? All wasted on a poor man’s little lamb. All wasted on the sins of this world that are going to

take you straight to hell from you don’t give them up.

Quote: Your walk talks; but your talk doesn't talk like your walk walks. A Christian shows what
he is by what he does with what he has.

4-
And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his
own herd, to dress (prepare) for the wayfaring man (traveler) that was come unto him; but took
the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

By now David was getting very mad. How could anyone be so cruel to do such a thing? Wow!
That’s how deceiving the devil is.

5-
And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD
liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:

How could he so easily forget what he had done to Uriah? You would think for a man to do

something like this it would be hard for him to sleep at night. But that is how the devil soothes

our conscious.

6-
And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

Be sure your sins will find you out. God never overlooks sin no matter the person or the

circumstances. It was a year later, and by then David had become so insensitive to his own sins

that he didn’t realize he was the villain in Nathan’s story. The qualities we condemn in others are

often our own character flaws. Which friends, associates, or family members do you find easy to
4

criticize and hard to accept? Instead of trying to change them, ask God to help you understand

their feelings and see your own flaws more clearly. Sometime we need to take a hard look in the

mirror.

*****************************************************************************
7-
And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed
thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
8-
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the
house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto
thee such and such things.
9-
Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou
hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain
him with the sword of the children of Am-mon.
2 Samuel 12:7-9 (The Message)
7-12
"You're the man!" said Nathan. "And here's what GOD, the God of Israel, has to say to you: I

made you king over Israel. I freed you from the fist of Saul. I gave you your master's daughter

and other wives to have and to hold. I gave you both Israel and Judah. And if that hadn't been

enough, I'd have gladly thrown in much more. So why have you treated the word of GOD with

brazen contempt, doing this great evil? You murdered Uriah the Hittite, then you took his wife as

your wife. Worse, you killed him with an Ammonite sword! You allowed the devil to trick you

into believing that if you killed Uriah, everything would be alright. You thought you had gotten

rid of all the problems and the rest you could cover up because you were King. And now,

because you treated God with such contempt and took Uriah the Hittite's wife as your wife,

killing and murder will continually plague your family.

This is GOD speaking, remember! I'll make trouble for you out of your own family. I'll take your

wives from right out in front of you. I'll give them to some neighbor, and he'll go to bed with

them openly. You did your deed in secret; I'm doing mine with the whole country watching!"

How brave some people are in their sins? Today they seem to have no shame at all. It’s nobody’s

business but mine. I’m not hurting anyone but myself. Her husband won’t know about it, his
5

wife won’t find out. Well Hello! A lie of the devil. You’ve allowed him to sit on your shoulder

and whisper in your ear all these things and you know what he is doing? Wow! If you could only

see him laughing at you you’d turn and run from him as fast as you could. You’re hurting

everyone that loves you. You’re hurting your character, your friends, your neighbors, they see

what you are doing. Not only are you doing this but you are asking for the cruse of this type of

sin that you are committing to be passed on to your children. Ask yourself the question, would

you want your children to do the things that you are doing? What did God tell David here? And

now, because you treated God with such contempt and took Uriah the Hittite's wife as your wife,

killing and murder will continually plague your family. Wow!!! Remember God said “I'll

make trouble for you out of your own family.” Consequences of sin. Somebody needs to break

that cruse. Will it be you? Or will you go in your own stubborn way and not believe what the

Word say’s about sin? You better not preach like this because people are not going to like it.

That’s what wrong with the world today Preachers have stopped preaching the truth!!! And the

truth is if we sin we will go to hell because that is what the word say’s!!!!

*****************************************************************************

Now Samuel say’s to David “Listen to what God has to say.

10-
Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me,
and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
11-
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I
will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy
wives in the sight of this sun.
12-
For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.
13-
And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David,
The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

During this incident, David wrote Ps. 51, giving valuable insight into his character- and offering

hope for us as well. No matter how miserable guilt makes you feel or how terrible you have

sinned, you can pour out your heart to God and seek His forgiveness as David did. There is
6

forgiveness for us when we sin. David also wrote Psalms 32, to express the joy he felt after he

was forgiven. Remember Godly sorrow worketh repentance!!

Listen now to this 14th verse.

14-
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to
blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Christians are like tea; their strength is drawn out by hot water. Turn up the heat and I’m going to

leave. It should be that “when the going gets tough, the tough keeps going. Wow! That’s exactly

what they did when they threw the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace. In fact they turned the

heat up seven times hotter than what it was. We as God’s children can sometime be so stubborn.

Like the Israelites “Well Lord I know it is wrong but I’m going to do it anyway. Wow! All I can

say is God have mercy on you!!! Psalms 32:9 (KJV)

9-
Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be
held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
Psalm 32:9 (The Message) 9- "Don't be ornery like a horse or mule that needs bit and bridle to
stay on track."
God describes some people in this verse as being stubborn as mules. Rather than letting God

guide them step by step, they stubbornly leave God only one option.

If he wants to keep them useful for him, he must use discipline and punishment, like a bit in a

mule’s mouth. God longs to guide us, with Love and wisdom rather than punishment. He offers

to guide us along the best pathway for our lives. Accept the advice written in God’s Word and

don’t let stubbornness get in the way!!

The predictions in these verses came true. Because David murdered Uriah and stole his wife. (1)

murder was a constant threat in his family.(13:26-30; 18:14,15; 1Kings 2::23-25); (2) his

household rebelled against him (15:13); (3) his wives were given to another in public view

(16:20-23); (4) his first child by Bathsheba died (12:18). If David had known the painful
7

consequences of his sin, he might not have pursued the pleasures of the moment. Remember that

the consequences of your actions reach farther and deeper than you can ever foresee. Because sin

has consequences, God has set up moral guidelines to help us avoid sin in the first place. Be

careful to do what God says.

David confessed and repented of his sin (12-13), but God’s judgment was that his child would

die. The consequences of David’s sin were irreversible. He took a life, God took his son’s life.

Sometimes an apology isn’t enough. When God forgives us and restores our relationship with

Him, he doesn’t eliminate all the consequences of our wrong doing. We may be tempted to say,

“If this is wrong, I can always apologize to God,” but we must remember that we may set into

motion events with irreversible consequences.

15-
And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare
unto David, and it was very sick.
16-
David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night
upon the earth.
17-
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he
would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
18-
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died.
God will not suffer his people to lie still in sin. By this parable Nathan drew from David a

sentence against himself. In his application, he was faithful. He says in plain terms, Thou art the

man. God shows how much he hates sin, even in his own people; and wherever he finds it, he

will not let it go unpunished. David says not a word to excuse him self or make light of his sin,

but freely owns it. Look at what he said here! “David said not a word to excuse himself. (How

many times have people that you know done wrong but try to blame someone else for their sins).

But David didn’t do this he was man enough to say “I have sinned against you O Lord!) When

David said, I have sinned, and Nathan perceived that he was a true penitent, he assured him his

sin was forgiven. Thou shalt not die: that is, not die eternally, nor be for ever put away from
8

God, as thou wouldest have been, if thou hadst not put away the sin. Though thou shalt all thy

days be chastened of the Lord, yet thou shalt not be condemned with the world.

There is this great evil in the sins of those who profess religion and relation to God that they

furnish the enemies of God and religion with matter for reproach and blasphemy. And it appears

from David's case, that even where pardon is obtained, the Lord will visit the transgression of his

people with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. For one momentary gratification of a vile

lust, David had to endure many days and years of extreme distress.

(2 Samuel 12:15-25)

15
And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare
unto David, and it was very sick.
16
David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night
upon the earth.
17
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he
would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
18
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to
tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake
unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him
that the child is dead?
19
But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead:
therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
20
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel,
and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and
when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
21
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether
GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
23
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but
he shall not return to me.
Dedication to God is something we must have if we want a strong relationship with Him!!!! It’s

not I’ll go to church and fake it. God knows if your relationship is genuine of not.

Psalms 51:7 (David is saying) Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall
be whiter than snow.
9

He pleads for pardon, that he may promote the glory of God and the conversion of sinners.

Purge me with hyssop, with the blood of Christ applied to my soul by a lively faith, as the water

of purification was sprinkled with a bunch of hyssop. The blood of Christ is called the blood of

sprinkling, Heb 12:24. If this blood of Christ, which cleanses from all sin, cleanse us from our

sin, then we shall be clean indeed, Heb 10:2. He asks not to be comforted, till he is first cleansed;

if sin, the bitter root of sorrow, be taken away, he can pray in faith, Let me have a well-grounded

peace, of thy creating, so that the bones broken by convictions may rejoice, may be comforted.

Hide thy face from my sins; blot out all mine iniquities out of thy book; blot them out, as a cloud

is blotted out and dispelled by the beams of the sun.

And the believer desires renewal to holiness as much as the joy of salvation. David now saw,

more than ever, what an unclean heart he had, and sadly laments it; but he sees it is not in his

own power to amend it, and therefore begs God would create in him a clean heart.

When the sinner feels this change is necessary, and reads the promise of God to that purpose, he

begins to ask it. He knew he had by his sin grieved the Holy Spirit, and provoked him to

withdraw.

This he dreads more than anything. He prays that Divine comforts may be restored to him. When

we give ourselves cause to doubt our interest in salvation, how can we expect the joy of it?

Wow!

This had made him weak; he prays, I am ready to fall, either into sin or into despair, therefore

uphold me with thy Spirit. Thy Spirit is a free Spirit, a free Agent himself, working freely. And

the more cheerful we are in our duty, the more constant we shall be to it. What is this but the
10

liberty wherewith Christ makes his people free, which is contrasted with the yoke of bondage?

Ga 5:1. It is the Spirit of adoption spoken to the heart.

Church I believe that God uses Failure in our lives sometimes to produce godliness. Wow!!!

Jeremiah 2:27- Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth:
for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble (their
failure) they will say, Arise, and save us.

Note: The people are compared to animals who search for males in mating season. Unrestrained,

they rush for power, money, alliances with foreign powers and other gods. The idols did not seek

the people; the people sought the idols and then ran wildly after them. Then they became so

comfortable in their sin that they could not think of giving it up!. Wow!!

Their only shame was in getting caught. If we desire something that we’ll do anything to get it,

this is a sign that we are addicted to it and out of touch with God. God’s love persists, even when

we don’t deserve it. Why? God knows how much we will lose if we fail to respond to His love.

Eternity is a long, long time without him. We must respond to His plea; give ourselves whole-

heartedly to God.

The stain of sin is more than skin deep. Israel had stains that could not be washed out, even with the

strongest cleaners. Spiritual cleansing must reach deep into the heart – and this is a job that God

alone can do. We cannot ignore the stain of sin and hope it will go away. Your sin has caused a deep

stain that God can and will remove if you are willing to let him cleanse you.

Isaiah1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
11

Note: A deep stain is virtually impossible to remove from clothing, and the stain of sin seems
equally permanent. But God can remove the stain of sin from our lives as He promised to do for
the Israelites. We don’t have to go through life permanently soiled. If we are willing and
obedient, God’s Word answers us that Christ has forgiven and removed our most indelible stains.

Those to whom God is the God of salvation, he will deliver from guilt; for the salvation he is the

God of, is salvation from sin. We may therefore plead with him, Lord, thou art the God of my

salvation, therefore deliver me from the dominion of sin. And when the lips are opened, what

should they speak but the praises of God for his forgiving mercy? (Ps 51:16-19)

David repented of those sins, God mercifully forgave him. No sin is too great to be forgiven! Do

you feel that you could never come close to God because you have done something terrible? God

can and will forgive you of any sin. While God forgives us, however,

He does not always erase the natural consequences of our sin-David’s life and family were never

the same as a result of his sins.

We need to say, God you feed me but I continually stay hungry, You give me water to drink but I

stay thirsty. Wow! God I can’t get enough of you. I want more and more and more. I long to see

your Glory in the Sanctuary. OH God give me a 20/20 Spiritual vision. To have 20/20 eyesight is

awesome but I want a greater Spiritual eyesight. From the dust of the earth God created Man,

and man became a living soul, but from the Rib of man God created a woman. And the woman

became a living soul, Wow!!! Do you realize just how big your God is?

When a baby is hungry, or in need of changing, or afraid, the mother will hold it and feed it at

her breast. In this way the baby is not only being fed nutritionally, but also relationally. Now,

unless you think this is just sentimentalism, recall the sobering studies done years ago to

determine why babies in orphanages who were being regularly fed, were still dying. It was

discovered that they were dying from a lack of being held and caressed because the attendants
12

were too busy to give them the individual attention they needed. These infants were dying from

lack of relationship! Even when children move beyond intimacy, the family is still designed to

function in such a way that eating is done relationally as they gather for meals. Many families

could testify that the meals they share together prove to be some of their most important times

together.

We’ve all heard of people falling in love over the internet before they ever meet. This raises an

interesting question. If two people who have never seen each other can fall deeply in love

through the written word (their e-mails and letters) and end up getting married, how much more

should we be able to develop a love relationship with the unseen Christ, using His living Word

that’s written in our hearts? Wow!!

A long-distance love relationship doesn’t depend on sight, but on the impact of the words. When

two people are relating this way, they’re going beyond the mere passing of information; there’s

an intimate relationship being built. Think about it!

Recovering the Axe Head of Genuine Anointing Story (By J. Lee Grady)

We’ve faked the power of Pentecost long enough. Let’s set aside the imitations and reclaim the

real deal.

Shortly after Elijah was carried to heaven in his fiery chariot, a group of young prophets asked

Elisha to go with them to build new living quarters near the Jordan River. While one of the

young men was cutting down a tree, the blade of his axe fell in the water and sank into the murky

depths of the riverbed (see 2 Kings 6:1-7).

The construction project came to an abrupt stop. This was before the days of flashlights and

sonar devices. These guys were in trouble.

13

“Let’s ditch our counterfeits and our cheap substitutes, and ask the Lord to restore the axe blade.

Let’s cry to Him for a pure, unadulterated, genuine, life-changing, planet-shaking revival.”

Knowing that his friends could not replace this expensive iron tool they had borrowed, the young

prophet cried to his mentor Elisha for help. The wise prophet threw a stick in the water where the

axe head had sunk. Immediately the heavy iron blade floated to the surface—defying the laws of

physics and proving that nothing is impossible with God. Elisha’s faith saved the day.

We can gain so much comfort from this story. It reminds us that God has power over the natural

world. It also proves that He cares about the seemingly trivial details of our lives—and that He is

even willing to bail us out of the messes we make as he did David.

As I have meditated on this passage in recent days I’ve also applied it to our current situation in

the churches today.. It illustrates how desperately we need to recover what we’ve lost.

I say to the church tonight have you’ve noticed that our blade is missing. I don’t know exactly

when it fell off the handle, but it seems as if we’ve been trying to build God’s house without the

sharp edge of His genuine anointing. We’ve traded the real for the phony. We’ve cheapened

Pentecost to the point that it’s been reduced to dry religious programs and circus sideshow antics.

We’ve mastered the art of hope. We know how to fake the anointing. You sometime see

Preachers push people to the floor during the altar times. They know how to manipulate music

and crowds so that they can create the atmosphere of the anointing. But in so many cases the real

anointing isn’t there. In its place is a hollow imitation.

Some charismatic leaders today are even selling specially handcrafted oils that promise the Holy

Spirit’s power. Others sell scented candles that claim to bring God’s presence. And last year one
14

brother was traveling the country with feathers in a jar—claiming that these belonged to an angel

with healing powers. Wow! How naïve can we be?

Lord, forgive us for our char·la·tan·ism. (one making usually showy pretenses to knowledge or ability)

We need the blade back! We must cry out to the God who has the power to raise iron from the

bottom of a river. Power to renew the blade that has become dull to the Spirit of Pentecost. Dull

to the anointing, Dull to the real worshipping of God, the way we use to do many years ago. Lord

I want my anointing back!!! Ye did run well. But who hindered you??

We are not going to advance Christ’s kingdom, or build His victorious church, using scented

oils, fake charms, ear-tickling prophecies and goofy charismatic gimmicks.

This is all wood, hay and stubble destined for the furnace. What we need today is the sharp blade

of the Word that is empowered by the Holy Ghost and fire. Wow!!!

Where is the God of Elisha? There is a cry in the American church today that resembles the cry

of the desperate young prophet in 2 Kings 6. We have not been good stewards of the Holy

Spirit’s gifts, and now the precious power of God has eluded us. We dropped it. Yet we are

beginning to acknowledge our blunder. I want to close with the ……….

Story of The Ugly Birdhouse.

“That is one ugly birdhouse, “ I thought, as I took my early morning walk on a new route.

“Wonder why the people who own that property don’t do something to spruce the drab birdhouse

up? They could sand and paint it, or paint a scene on it…something, for goodness sake!” Just as I

was mulling over all these constructive critical thoughts in my mind (!), a beautiful bluebird flew

out of the above mentioned ugly birdhouse. He soared off into the air, with the beauty of his

open wings in full display.

The unattractive appearance of the birdhouse made no difference to that little bird. He saw
15

an appealing place to make his home - to build his nest- and he entered it and did so. Inside the

wooden house, the nest is woven and is made of twigs, leaves and a variety of other materials

from nature. Do you know God wants to build His nest of love inside our hearts? (Confess and

forget about the sins as David did and go on with your life). The exterior appearance doesn’t

matter to Him- whether we are spruced up and beautiful or dried out and weather beaten. When

God looks at you, or me, or any of His children, He sees a wonderful place to make His home.

He wants to bring us all His attributes, and will build a tightly woven nest of love in our hearts.

He will take twigs of compassion, love, joy, patience, peace, gentleness, kindness, goodness and

self control, and weave them into a wonderful love nest for our hearts to dwell in. The best

component of God’s love is forgiveness. He weaves that twig of forgiveness throughout the

entire nest, holding it together. He is ready to forgive all our sins, and this forgiveness we receive

allows us to soar to the heights of a personal relationship with Him. I am so glad God chooses

His dwelling place in the hearts of all…. Not just those with polished exterior appearances. For

outward appearances and beauty will fade, but the love the Lord has for us never will. My friend

it doesn’t cost you a thing. Christ has already paid for it at Calvary!!
