How to Create a Bootable Install DVD of Mac OS X Lion

Introduction
Mac OS X Lion is exclusively available using the App Store till this moment, this means if you have a Snow
Leopard and desired to upgrade to Lion, then you will have to go to the App Store, buy Lion and then download it.
You can not purchase an installation DVD from anywhere ( till this moment ). In this article, I will be showing you
how to create a bootable installation disc using the image you downloaded from the App store.

I personally
ersonally prefer to have a bootable installation disc, this is useful when I later need to format my machine, or
upgrading multiple machine, instead of each time going to the App Store and downloading a 3.77 GB image. To
create a bootable installation discc follow the below steps:

1.

Once the download is completed, don't click Continue.. If you went through the wizard and installed Lion,
then the image is deleted automatically once the installation is completed. That's why we need to grab the Lion
image before performing the installation, so that if we later need to install Lion again on the same machine or on
another workstation, we don't have to download it again from the App Store.

2. When the download is completed and the Install Max OS X page opens, right click
ick the Mac OS X Lion icon on the

Dock, and click on Options then Show in Finder

3. The Downloaded Installation App will be shown inside the Application folder, right click on it and then press on
Show Package Contents

4. Open Contents > SharedSupport > and then you will find InstallESD.dmg

5. I prefer to have a copy of this .dmg as well, so I copied it to my desktop. Now Double click InstallESD.dmg, the
image will be mounted and opened

6. From the Menu bar, click on File > Burn "Mac OS X Install ESD" to Di
Disc

7. The burn process will start

8. Once the burn process is completed, the DVD disc will be shown on the desktop

You are done. Now you have a bootable Mac OS X Lion installation DVD
Summary
OS X Lion is available as a digital download from the Mac Ap
App
p Store. However, we are still able to create a bootable
disc by grabbing and burning the content of the downloaded package before performing the installation of Lion, as the
downloaded package will be automatically deleted once the installation of Lion is completed.

How to Create a Bootable USB Install Disk for MAC OS X Mountain Lion
Introduction
In a previous article, How To Purchase and Upgrade to Mac OS X Mountain Lion , I have shown you how MAC OS X
Mountain
in Lion is only available as a download from Apples Mac App Store. In this article, I will be showing you how
to create a bootable USB install disk, this will be very useful so that you can use it later to format your machine or to
upgrade multiple other MAC machines without needing to download the 4GB installer multiple times, or even install
OS X Mountain Lion on a machine that has no internet access.
When OS X Mountain Lion is downloaded from the MAC App Store, you can find the installer inside
insid the
/Applications folder and it is called Install OS X Mountain Lion
Lion,, it is 4.37 GB in size. Imagine having multiple MAC
machines and you require to update all of them, without creating a bootable USB disk, you will need to download the
installer
on
eac
each
h
single
machine.

The USB drive should be minimum of 8 GB in size. and be informed that the below steps will require to completely
format the USB disk. So if you have anything on the USB disk which you will be using to make it a bootable USB for
Mountainn Lion, make sure you back up whatever data on this USB before proceeding.
As you can see in the below snapshot, I have an 8 GB USB disk, and I named it OSX Mountain Lion Bootable USB.

I will be using a tool called Lion DiskMaker

DiskMaker, the real benefit behind
nd Lion DiskMaker is that its free and easy to use.
To download Lion DiskMaker, go to http://blog.gete.net/lion
http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/ , when this article was written, I used
Lion DiskMaker version 2.0.1

1. After you download Lion DiskMaker, unzip it and run the application. When the application run, it will welcome
you to Lion DiskMaker and ask you to choose which OS X version you wish to make a boot disk of. Currently it
can be used for the latest two operating ssystems
ystems from Apple, MAC OS X Lion and MAC OS X Mountain Lion. In
this article, we will be creating a Bootable disk for Mountain Lion, so click on Mountain Lion (10.8)

2. As you have already downloaded Mountain Lion, Lion DiskMaker will automatically detect that you have the
Mountain Lion installer available inside the /Applications folder. Click Use this copy , if you have other copy for
the installer on an external drive or on the desktop for example, then click on Use another copy... and browse to
select it.

3. Now Lion DiskMaker needs to know what do you want to build, a bootable DVD or a bootable disk. As we are
going to use a USB disk, then click on Create a boot disk

4. Now Lion DiskMaker needs to know which kind of disk you will use, a minimum 8 GB USB disk is required. If
you have a larger disk size or for example an external hard disk, then click on the Another kind of disk button and
select the appropriate disk you want to use. As I am using an 8 GB usb disk, then I will click on An 8 GB USB
thumb drive

5. The 8 GB usb disk will be detected and displayed, click on its name and then click on Choose this disk to continue

6. You will be warned that the whole content of the disk will be deleted. So please backup any vital data you have on
the usb disk before proceeding. Once ready, click on Erase then create the disk

7. Erasing the disk will start, and after that copying the installer and creating a bootable usb disk will follow.
The process will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes or so using USB 2.0

8. When
hen the operation is completed successfully, the USB disk will open and you can see the content of it.

Also a confirmation page will launch informing you that your OS X boot disk is ready. If you want to test it, then
you can click on Open Startup Disk P
Preference,, and set the USB disk as the startup disk. Reboot your machine,
and the system will boot from the USB disk.

Last note : this how the USB disk drive icon will look like after doing it an OS X Mountain Lion bootable disk

Gatekeeper Feature in MAC OS X Mountain Lion 10.8

Introduction
MAC was always considered to be safe by not getting affected with Viruses, worms and Trojans. However, in the last
few years, this concept is not valid anymore, and MAC started to be infected with worms and Trojans. Apple introduced
a new feature with OS X 10.7.5, called Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper allows users to restrict which sources they can install
applications from, in order to reduce the likelihood of inadvertently executing a Trojan horse. In this articles, I will be
explaining to you Gatekeeper, and how to change its settings.
Some apps that are downloaded and installed from the Internet could adversely affect your Mac. Gatekeeper helps
protect your Mac from such apps. It is designed to protect Mac users from running malicious software by checking apps
before they run for the very first time. Gatekeeper is Apples answer to Trojan apps that trick users into installing
software
they
dont
actually
want.
By default, with MAC OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, If you tried to install an application that is not installed from the App
Store, then you will receive a pop up message stating that the application can't be opened because it is from an
unidentified
developer.
For example, I'm trying to install FileZilla, which is an open source FTP Client ! The application is neither downloaded
from the App Store, nor from a registered Developer with Apple, hence, Gatekeeper blocked me from installing suck
Application.

In such case, you have two options: Either to bypass Gatekeeper temporarily per application, or permanently for all
applications.
Its easy to manually override Gatekeeper on a case-by-case basis without changing the default setting. Just right-click
(or control+click) the app and select Open from the menu. Gatekeeper will still display a warning, but it will also give
you the option to install the app anyway. However, if you want to change Gatekeeper settings or even disable it, then
follow the below steps :

1. Open System Preferences. Do this by clicking on the Apple logo

click on System Preferences...

in the top left side of the screen and then

2. In System Preferences and under the Personal section, click on Security & Privacy

3. Under the General tab, you can find the gatekeeper option:
Allow applications downloaded from:
o Mac App Store : Only apps that are downloaded from the Mac App Store can be opened
o Mac App Store and identified developers : (default in OS X Mountain Lion) Only apps that are
downloaded from the Mac App Store and applications from the Web/Internet, signed
sig
by certified Apple
developers

Note : Developers are not forced to register with Apple to be identifiable by Gatekeeper. Apple only
recently open the registration and it is still unknown if app developers will choose to register with Apple if
they are not selling their apps via Mac App Store. Thus it does not mean that the app is not trustworthy to
be run if it is not on the Mac App Store or not from an Apple registered developers
Anywhere : Allow applications to run regardless of their source on the IInternet
nternet (default in OS X Lion
v10.7.5); Gatekeeper is effectively turned off.

So, with the default settings, if you want to download and install application not from the Mac Store and not from
unidentified developers, then the application installer will bbe blocked.

4. To make Changes, click on the lock at the bottom of the preferences page and type the username and password of a
user account with administrative rights.

5. Once you authenticate, the options will not be grayed anymore and you can start makin
making
g changes. For example, to
install applications from the internet where they are not from the App Store and not from an identified developer,
then select Anywhere

You will be presented with a warning message that enabling Anywhere, will make your Mac less
les secure. To
confirm your selection, click Allow From Anywhere

6. Now, go back and run the application that you downloaded not from the App Store and not from identified
developer.
MAC OS X this time will not block the installer, but will give you a message stating that this application was
downloaded from the Internet, and if you are sure to open it. Click Open

Summary
Gatekeeper is a new feature, it is designed to protect users from dangerous applications. Specifically, blocking
applications that are not downloaded from the App Store or from unidentified Developers.

Enable Writing To NTFS Drives in Mac OS X

Introduction
Using a Mac is a wonderful experience until you try to use a NTFS-formatted
formatted drive, which includes most Windows
hard drives! By default, Mac OS X doesnt support writin
writing
g onto NTFS disks, it only support reading from NTFS
disks, this means if you have a USB drive or an external hard disk for example, then you can connect it to your MAC
and the disk will be mounted, you can copy your files from your the external disk, however,
howe
you will not be able to
write back to it ! Attempting to drag a file into an NTFS drive in Mac OS X will only result in your mouse cursor
turning into an error sign.

So what's the solution ? You will need a third party software to enable writing to N
NTFS
TFS disks. One of my favorite is
Tuxera NTFS for Mac. Tuxera Supports : Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion)
and 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Tuxera works in both 32
32-bit and 64-bit kernel modes.
Note : If you have previously beenn using another third party NTFS driver, then you may need to disable or even
uninstall it, since it could interfere with Tuxera NTFS. Otherwise the installation will be unsuccessful and will produce
errors.
You can download and try Tuxera for free for 15 days : http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/
http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera

1. Double click on the downloaded dmg file to start the installation process

2. Double click on Install Tuxera NTFS

GatewayKeeper will
ill warn you that this application is installed from the internet and not from the App Store and
will ask you if you want to continue, click Open

3. The package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed, click Continue

4. The Welcome too Tuxera wizard will be displayed, click Continue

5. Accept the software license agreement , click Continue and then click Agree

6. The package is ready to be installed, click Install

7. You will be asked to authenticate with an administrative username aand

nd password. Type a username and password for
a user with administrative rights on this Mac, then click Install Software

8. The Installation process will start , and then you will be presented with a page where you can either choose to try
Tuxera for free for
or 15 days, or enter a product number and register/activate the software. If you want to purchase a
license, then click on Purchase License.. button and the licensing page for Tuxera will open (
http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera
http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/licensing-tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/ )
Make your choice and then click Continue

9. Once installation is completed, you will be asked to restart your machine. You are recommended
recomme
to restart your
computer to be sure that the changes made to the system will take effect. Click Restart

10. Settings for Tuxera NTFS can be changed using the preference pane. To access the preference pane, open System
Preferences
( Menu ->
> System preferences...) and click the Tuxera NTFS icon.

Although you do not need to make any changes here, I will be just displaying for you the available options in
screenshots.
ble Tuxera NTFS, or even uninstall it.
For example, under the General tab, you can disable
Under Volumes,, you can see the mounted NTFS drives.
If you want to check your activation product key, or to purchase Tuxera, then this information can be found
under the Activation tab.

Summary
Tuxera NTFS for Mac breaks down the barriers between Windows and OS X. Effectively solves the communication
problems between the Mac system and NTFS, providing full read and write access to Windows NTFS partitions under
OS X.
