A group of radical artists took the name 'De Stijl' under leadership of
Theo van Doesburg had a goal: the organic combination of architecture,
sculpture and painting in a lucid, elemental, unsentimental construction.
Their constructive doctrine was aimed at a new aesthetic. The first word
was 'purity: a 'white' world was to replace the 'brown' one.
There is an old and a new consciousness of the age. The old directed
towards the individual, the new towards the universal.
The war and its content: Individual predominance in every field
The new art contained: a relationship of equality between the universal
and the individual.
The founders of the new culture eliminated the obstacles to develop in
the way of pure artistic expression, the logical conclusion of every
artistic concept.
Adolf Loos and his remark of Louis Sullivan: 'It could only benefit us if for
a time we were to abandon ornament and concentrate entirely on the
erection of building that were finely shaped and charming in their
sobriety'.
Adolf developed his radical aesthetic purism, which made him a zealous
foe of Art Nouveau and the German Werkbund.
