CH APTER 3
Methodology
Research Design
This chapter provides information on the research method of
this study. Wiley and Sons(2014) Defined descriptive research as
a term used to describe many types of survey research that are
undertaken by marketing researchers to understand customer
perceptions, judgments, and intentions. Given(2007) This kind of
research strives to paint a complete and accurate picture of the
world b y focusing on the factual details that best describe a
current or past event. The research surve y method b y Fowler
(2013) has been chosen to determine the perception of local and
foreign visitors on the service given by the pedicab/tricycle drivers
as tour guides in Intramuros. The researchers want to find out the
opinion of the respondents the local and foreign tourists and to
know what applicable policy may be proposed. This design was
chosen to meet the objectives of the study namel y to transform
and upgrade the service and overall appearance of Pedicab and
Tricycle drivers that will turn Intramuros into a more competitive
historical destination and help the local government to implement

37

several policies and regulations that will help attain the foregoing
objectives.
Population and Sampling
The specific sampling method will be using in the stud y is
the purposive sampling in which it is based upon a variety of
criteria which may include specialist knowledge of the research
issue, or capacity and willingness to participate in the research
and convenient sampling where subjects are selected because of
their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher .

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are the following:

Percentage

38

Tricycle and Pedicab drivers that are legall y operating in

Intramuros and acting as a tour guide as well.

Local and foreign tourist in Intramuros that are aware in the

operation of Pedicab and Tricycle drivers as tour guides in
Intramuros and experienced riding on it.

Research Instrument
Instruments that will be using in the study include the
questionnaire

and

interview.

Researchers

ensure

that

these

39

instruments

chosen

are

valid

and

reliable.

Likert

scale

questionnaire is a useful type of a rating question. It is a useful

benchmark as you can compare scores to others in a similar
sector.

The

researcher

will

be

distributing

two

sets

of

questionnaire. One is for the local and foreign visitors and the
other one is for the pedicab and tricycle drivers. The Part I is for
the demographic profile of the respondents. It includes the name
(optional), age, gender etc. The Part II includes questions that are
based on the variables given in sub problem 1. The respondents
will be rating the questions wherein 5 is the highest and 1 is the
lowest. Next method is the interview method, also called as a
conversation with a purpose. Large amount of relevant information
about the experiences of others may be collected by directl y
questioning or talking to respondents. This method will be applied
to

those

respondents

who

will

be

having

hard

time

understanding the questions like having poor eyesight or if the

respondent is a senior citizen.
Data Gathering Procedures
The first thing to do to gather data is to seek permission
from the authority that facilitates Intramuros to conduct surve ys

40

and interview within the area. Second, after it was approved, data
for this research will be collected through questionnaires. The
survey will be created using suitable questions modified from
related

research

and

individual

questions

formed

by

the

researcher. The researchers will assure confidentiality of their

survey sheets. The researchers also understand that peoples
consciousness may also affect their honesty and effectiveness in
answering the surve y, and so, the researchers will give people the
option of being anon ymous. Participants were given time to
respond and then the researchers collected the surve ys the next
day. There were no incentives offered for participating in the
research.

And

lastly

after

all

the

data

was

gathered,

the

researcher will tally all the questions and compare. The ideal time
frame for the researcher to gather all the necessary data is a for
5-7da ys.

Statistical Treatment of Data

41

The most appropriate method to use in this stud y is the

following
Frequency. This method will be used to tally all the
statistical data gathered and to know in which variables do the
majority of the respondents both meet.
Percentage. This method will also be used to know the
gravity of the data results after getting the frequency. It will be
easier to know what is the highest and lowest point in the surve y.
T test formula. It was chosen to compare responses from
two

groups.

These

two

groups

can

come

from

different

experimental treatments, or different natural populations. The

stud y aims to know if there is a big difference between the
perceptions of local and foreign visitors in terms of the proficiency
of the pedicab/tricycle drivers in Intramuros as stated in sub
problem number two. Data is collected through surve ys and
interview. The formula for T test is shown below:
