RedHat Linux 5.6 Installation is done on Laptop with following specs available with
us:
HP Laptop Pavilion dv6
HDD: 600
RAM: 6GB
Host OS: Windows 7
Guest OS: Redhat Linux 5.6
VMware Workstation 8
Assumptions:
Installation of VMware workstation and Creation of VMware is already completed
Redhat Linux 5.6 iso image or DVD media is available
Disk Space Requirements for Oracle eBusiness Suite R12.1.1, as at this point of
time you should be very clear what space required so that accordingly we can create
mount points in Linux.
Fresh Installation:
Applications tier/node files system: 35GB
Database tier/node files system: 55GB
Total Capacity of HD Size: 90GB
Vision Installation:
Applications tier/node files system: 35GB
Database tier/node files system: 208GB
Total Capacity of HD Size: 243GB
The database node disk space requirements for both the production database and the
Vision Demo database include database files (.dbf) and the 11gR1 database Oracle
Home.

1-In Virtual machine setting chose option Use ISO Image File and brows to

4-The installer will offer you if you want to check the DVD media before installation.
If you already tested media or iso image you can press the "tab" key to move focus to
the "Skip" key, then press the "Enter" key to continue

The Welcome screen does not prompt you for any input. From this screen you can
access the Release Notes for Red Hat Enterprise Linux by clicking on the Release
Notes button.
6-Select the Language that will be used during the installation, we will choose English
but you can select your appropriate language and press Next

8-In this step to put your installation number. You may skip entering this number if
you don't have one.
This number will determine the package selection set that is available to the installer.
If you choose to skip entering the installation number you will be presented with a
basic selection of packages to install later on.

Partitioning allows you to divide your hard drive into isolated sections, where each
section behaves as its own hard drive.
10-We will choose "Create custom layout" and create the partitions as we need on the
disk based on the space requirement for installation of Oracle eBusiness Suite R12.1.1

to create a partition

Mount Point: Enter the partition's mount point. For example, if this partition should
be the root partition, enter /; enter /boot for the /boot partition, and so on. You can
also use the pull-down menu to choose the correct mount point for your partition. For
a swap partition the mount point should not be set - setting the filesystem type to swap
is sufficient.
File System Type: Using the pull-down menu, select the appropriate file system type
for this partition. Usually we will choose default file system.
Allowable Drives: This field contains a list of the hard disks installed on your system.
If a hard disk's box is highlighted, then a desired partition can be created on that hard
disk.
Size (MB): Enter the size (in megabytes) of the partition. Note, this field starts with
100 MB; unless changed, only a 100 MB partition will be created.
Additional Size Options: Choose whether to keep this partition at a fixed size, to
allow it to "grow" (fill up the available hard drive space) to a certain point, or to allow
it to grow to fill any remaining hard drive space available.
If you choose Fill all space up to (MB), you must give size constraints in the field to
the right of this option. This allows you to keep a certain amount of space free on your
hard drive for future use.
Force to be a primary partition: Select whether the partition you are creating should
be one of the first four partitions on the hard drive. If unselected, the partition is
created as a logical partition Encrypt: Choose whether to encrypt the partition so that
the data stored on it cannot be accessed without a passphrase, even if the storage
device is connected to another system
OK: Select OK once you are satisfied with the settings and wish to create the
partition

12-A root partition (3.0 GB - 5.0 GB) this is where "/" (the root directory) is
located. In this setup, all files (except those stored in /boot) are on the root partition.
A 3.0 GB partition allows you to install a minimal installation, while a 5.0 GB root
partition lets you perform a full installation, choosing all package groups.
In this installation we have chooses 8GB space of the disk.

13-A /boot/ partition (250 MB) the partition mounted on /boot/ contains the
operating system kernel (which allows your system to boot Red Hat Enterprise
Linux), along with files used during the bootstrap process. Due to limitations, creating
a native ext3 partition to hold these files is required.
For most users, a 250 MB boot partition is sufficient

14- A swap partition (at least 256 MB) swap partitions are used to support virtual
memory. In other words, data is written to a swap partition when there is not enough
RAM to store the data your system is processing.
In years past, the recommended amount of swap space increased linearly with the
amount of RAM in the system. But because the amount of memory in modern systems
has increased into the hundreds of gigabytes, it is now recognized that the amount of
swap space that a system needs is a function of the memory workload running on that
system.
However, given that swap space is usually designated at install time, and that it can be
difficult to determine beforehand the memory workload of a system, Red Hat
recommend determining system swap using the following table. For further details
check on redhat.com

16- This screen will ask you if you want to keep the boot record on the disk or not.
Keep the defaults and press next To boot the system without boot media, you usually
need to install a boot loader.
A boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts. It is
responsible for loading and transferring control to the operating system kernel
software. The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system.
GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader), which is installed by default, is a very powerful
boot loader. GRUB can load a variety of free operating systems, as well as proprietary
operating systems with chain-loading (the mechanism for loading unsupported
operating systems, such as DOS or Windows, by loading another boot loader).

17-Here we will configure the network. Provide a hostname manually. Then click the
Edit Button against Network Devices,
18- Disable the ipv6 and provide a static IP Address for IPv4.

19- Click on the map to choose a region for your Time Zone
From here there are two ways for you to select your time zone:
Using your mouse, click on the interactive map to select a specific city
(represented by a yellow dot). A red X appears indicating your selection.
You can also scroll through the list at the bottom of the screen to select your time
zone. Using your mouse, click on a location to highlight your selection.

20- Setting up a root account and password is one of the most important steps
during your installation. Your root account is similar to the administrator account
used on Windows NT machines. The root account is used to install packages,
upgrade RPMs, and perform most system maintenance. Logging in as root gives
you complete control over your system.

21- Once a package group has been selected, if optional components are available you
can click on Optional packages to view which packages are installed by default, and
to add or remove optional packages from that group. If there are no optional
components this button will be disabled

I strongly suggest, try to install everything while you are making your first RHEL
installation and you are doing first time, Its little hard to try install-add some rpms
and other tools on RHEL.

At this point there is nothing left for you to do until all the packages have been
installed. How quickly this happens depends on the number of packages you have
selected and your computer's speed.
23- Congratulations! Your Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation is now complete!
The installation program prompts you to prepare your system for reboot. Remember
to remove any installation media if it is not ejected automatically upon reboot

31- If you have chosen not to register then this page shows that your system is not
setup for Updates
32- Use this page to create any additional users other than root, here we will be
creating our own OS user, this will be owner of our Oracle eBusiness suite installation

If you're using Red Hat or a distribution that bases itself on Red Hat, then you're
going to use the RPM method, stands for Red Hat Package Manager. You can go to
the Red Hat website or any number of mirrors and get programs for Linux
rpm -ivh new_program.rpm
This installs the program (-i option for install)

Software Requirements
The following maintenance tools must be installed on all machines, and their locations
specified both in the PATH of the account that runs Rapid Install and in the PATH of
the accounts that will own the database tier and application tier file systems.

Kernel Settings:
Edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file to configure your kernel settings to the minimum values
shown below.
To edit the file we will use vi editor

The operating system user that owns the database node file system and starts the
database node services is called the oracle user.

The operating system user that owns the Applications node file system and starts the
Applications node services is called the applmgr user. The applmgr user is the account
that owns the Applications node technology stack (APPL_TOP, COMMON_TOP,
OracleAS 10.1.2 Oracle Home, and OracleAS 10.1.3 1-14 Oracle E-Business Suite
Installation Guide: Using Rapid InstallOracle Home).
The names of these accounts must be the same on all nodes in an Oracle E-Business
Suite system.
You can perform (Reference - Page 27 - For linux user):
The default name for the oracle user is ora<SID>. For example, for a production
(ORAERPPROD) environment, the default Oracle OS username might be oraerpprod.
For the applmgr user, the default name is appl<SID>. For example, for a Vision
Demo (VIS) environment, the default Apps OS username might be applvis.
Two common groups that are defined in installations are:

oraInst.loc must be located in /etc (for Linux and IBM AIX) or /var/opt/oracle

If oraInst.loc does not exist, create it in the proper directory. The contents should look

4.
Install a new, fully configured Oracle E-Business Suite system, including the
latest certified Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack and all patches,
product family release update packs, release update packs, and other updates
available at the time of this Oracle E-Business Suite release.
Lay down the file system and configure server processes for an upgraded
system.
Install a new database node or Applications node technology stack.
Rapid Install employs a wizard that guides you through the screens used to carry out
the selected task. On the wizard screens, you enter configuration values for your
system; these will typically be saved in the Oracle E-Business Suite database for later
use.
Type of installation
Standard
In a new Standard installation, you define many aspects of the configuration. You will
need to choose where to install the required nodes (database node and primary
Applications node).
Express
In an Express installation, you set up a fully configured, single-user/single-machine
system using a few basic configuration parameters, such as database type and name,
top-level installation directory, and port pool choice. The remaining directory
specifications and mount points are supplied by Rapid Install using default values. An
Express installation includes a set of core products and uses the US7ASCII character
set.
