The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York harbour. It was made in
France and given as a gift to America by the people of France. The idea of the statue
came from Edouard de Laboulaye, a French professor in 1865. He discussed it with his
friend, the sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who later designed and built the huge
figure. He called it Liberty Enlightening the World. The figure is made of thin copper
sheets beaten into a shape over a frame. When copper is exposed to the weather, it turns
green.
