MANINGDING
1-D

SUMMARY:

Patch Adams is a movie about the heart of a former suicidal patient who found his
purpose in life while being treated inside a mental institution. He admitted himself in this mental
institution, and had a change of heart after interacting with a co- patient. He found a new reason
to live not from the appropriate, effective and efficient treatment rendered by the health care
facilitators but from an insight and reflection after helping his roommate in the mental
institution. He soon found his direction in life after that instance. The doctor and other nurses in
the institution didnt really help at all in his sudden found hope to live. After leaving the
institution with a seed in his heart to help others, he soon pursued medicine in the hopes of
fulfilling his longed act to serve others. He had ups and downs in his journey. Though there are
lots of people who really want to challenge his ability and capabilities of becoming a good and
competent doctor, he never gave them that chance to snatch from him the compassion he has in
helping others. And with this compassion living and growing in his heart as he walk his journey,
he had been able to do as much as he can to heal and treat patients holistically as a doctor.

REFLECTION:

Patch Adams is a movie which had really moved me. It had impact on me, in a sense that
what was in the movie, really do happens in reality. From the exposure I had as a student up to
the time I had been practicing my profession from my pre-med course, I had encounter lots of
doctors who really has the heart in serving others and a few who see his profession as a title to
look down on others and belittle other people and more than that, is just a means to squeeze in
people financially. Being a healthcare facilitator isnt easy but is a very fulfilling calling. And
being a doctor is more than being able to diagnose a patients disease, more than just prescribing

and administering medications, more than just performing procedures, it is more than any of
these things. It is being able to look beyond what is spoken, its being able to feel what is
unspoken, being able to see beyond the eyes and look and determine what lies in other persons
heart. Yes, those previous mentioned things are important, but equally important to the thing
which is most likely to be neglected when pressure, weariness and exhaustion is entertained.
Being a doctor is more than just being knowledgeable and skillful. It is equally needed to possess
that outstanding attitude even when faced with difficulties, fame, title and respect. Treating
patients doesnt just come only in physical infirmities, because a lot of times, discomforts felt
physically has underlying cause coming from emotional instability.

Having been able to watched and reflect on the said movie, I was watered like a plant. I
was nourished as I am being deeply grounded and rooted to where the Lord has called, chose and
planted me. Being knowledgeable and skillful is not enough to be called a doctor. Unlike the
doctors in the movie, who are really arrogant, prideful and indifferent, doctors should be the
other way around. Possessing the right attitude in dealing with patients, makes it a good
foundation in having an excellent communication to be able to diagnose and treat the person.
Being a doctor does not give a person a title but a privilege instead, to be able to reach others and
see whats beyond and what others cant see. It is not enough to be called a doctor when you can
be an extra- ordinary doctor who choose to serve with his heart and be fulfilled than to be served
and be comfortable.
