Paulists committed to the mission of Jesus, and dedicated to be
welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to reach
out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods creation through
worship, education, and service toward the common good.

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

One of the wonderful actions to come out of Vatican II

was that many of the Liturgical ministries were re-opened
to we lay people: Eucharistic Ministers, Readers of the
Scripture, Music, Welcoming to the Liturgy, Sacristans,
Altar Servers, MC (Master of Ceremonies), Liturgy
Committees, Church Environments. All of which assist at
the Table of the Lord. For some people, they feel they are
not 'worthy' to assist at the Table. But that is not the
point at all. These ministries are part of our Baptismal
calling---to serve at Christ's invitation to come forward and
physically support the Liturgy. It takes all of us---the
community present--to prepare this Table of the Lord in
our parish. On Saturday, Sept.12, 10:30-11:30AM we will
be Updating and training all Eucharistic Ministers and all
Welcome Ministers. Saturday, Sept.19, 10:30-11:45am
we will be Updating/training all Readers. You will be
asked to serve once a month.
Come and see how you can step-up and help.

A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers

Religious communities not being called to the accomplishment of

ordinary work, they ought therefore to confine their attention and
main activity to the one for which they were especially instituted. This
distinct work must be kept clearly and always before the minds of
their members, and be strongly grasped. It should be the great
stimulant of their zeal, and inspire all their actions. All their endeavors
should be devoted to it, and in proportion as they are, their effects
upon the faithful and the world will prove providential, salutary and
successful. To be satisfied with any other plane of action is to grieve
the Holy Spirit, to deviate from the path of perfection, and to become
an obstacle in the way instead of a help to the progress of the
Church. [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]

If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

The good steward must not show favoritism. The rich may have many
material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading
that God has chosen the worlds poor to be rich in faith and inheritors
of Gods kingdom.

BLOOD DRIVE

Our next blood drive is scheduled for Wed. Sept 30, 1 6:30pm in
Carvlin Hall. Plan now to schedule an appointment to donate or even
help the day of the drive. We also need help getting the word out to
the neighborhood and businesses about the drive to bring donors in to
support this very worthy community service. Register to donate online
at: redcrossblood.org or 1-800-733-2767. Use the sponsor code:
paulistcenter. You can also call the office and Rose will be happy to
help you schedule.

STAYING FIT WITH ISAAC HECKER

By Brett Hoover - Author and Professor at Marymount College

Cultivate your inner restlessness Being a seeker is part of being human. We sometimes look on our restlessness as a
problem, but the only real problem is when we repress our longings for something more or when we think something
(or some person) will fill our hearts or make us whole. No person or thing will ever be enough we were made for
God. Pay special attention to your moments of restlessness and listen for what the Spirit has to say to you in those
moments.
Talk to people you trust about your spiritual life No one can be a person of faith on his or her own. My own biggest
mistakes happened when I isolated myself and tried to resolve everything on my own. We are never more stupid than
when we refuse to seek the wisdom of others. Schedule time in the next week to talk to your priest, campus minister,
a spiritual director or close friend about the ways you feel the Spirit moving in your life.
Listen for Gods call Your thoughts, feelings, reactions to others and desires tell you something about Gods call for
you, but not necessarily what you first think they tell you. The key is to find out what makes you more loving and more
open to others. Avoid what, on the other hand, makes you more fearful or insecure. Keep in mind that God may speak
through people you do not like or situations that make you feel very uncomfortable.
Making a difference Believe that the Spirit has a unique role for you in this world. Be aware of the world around you.
Dont run away from other peoples suffering; you may be the one to accompany them in it. Make a list of the gifts,
skills and talents you have that are useful in trying to make the world a better place. Next, put them to work.

OFFICE SPACE FOR RENT

The parish has office space for rent in the Paulist

Center. The room has large windows for lots of
natural light and is equipped with an air conditioner.
The office is approximately 280 sq. ft. Utilities
included except telephone and internet. The cost is
$450 per month and insurance is required. Contact
Jeanne McPherson at the parish office for more
information. 503-231-4955 or
jeannem@stphilipneripdx.org.

CLW VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Are you looking for a way to volunteer and

really make a difference? This is a way to
continue a Tradition that started over 3500 years ago
and you can help to make sure it continues into the
future. We are in need of two teachers ---once a
month for 20 minutesduring the 9:30 Mass. The
Childrens Liturgy of the Word (8-10 students in
grades 1-5) is designed to help young people
understand the Scripture Readings for that Sunday
and how to apply them. Good material. Fun
students. We would like to start on Sunday,
September 27th. This may be your chance to help a
child see God in their life. Please contact Barbara
Harrison.
