Blessing of the Fleet

Tuncurry following 9am Mass

I will be away most of next week; my father, Charles Barker, died last Wednesday morning
and his funeral will be this coming Tuesday. You might keep the repose of his Soul in your
prayers as well as the rest of my family as the funeral celebrations unfold. We werent
close, his choice, but it is still a sad time as the death of any family member or friend is.
Your prayers are much appreciated. And my mother had her hip replaced a couple of
weeks ago. My job next week will be as carer for her so that my siblings can attend the
funeral. You know how sometimes the stars all seem to collide rather than align this is
one of those times.
I am hopeful in that vein to begin developing further our funeral and grief support ministry.
It really is such an important part of our life here together. All of us have been touched by
loss at some point and the death of loved ones is such a difficult time even for people of
immense faith. I would like to see us really proactive in this area. A number of our sister
parishes in the diocese and in other faith communities have some wonderful ministries
underway. I think we need to seriously consider looking at some of those and developing
something to support our own needs here.
What would I like then? In talking with Greg Byrne recently we thought that two areas
were essential. Firstly the support from the moment of death to the celebration of life and
secondly what happens after and beyond the initial weeks post funeral. I would love to
hear back from anyone who may have some suggestions for a way forward.
My initial thoughts: that we need a team of people formed who would, with the help of the
Parish Priest or Priest presiding, put the celebration together in conversation with the
grieving family. We need enough trained volunteers so that at least two people can work
as a pair to visit the family and manage the preparation of the booklet, help in choosing
music and readings and be a presence with the family on the day. These two people or
other members of the team would then have if possible the task of ongoing contact with
the family in a supportive and caring role.
Some families as we know will need more of this and some families less. Some families
simply appreciate a phone call with an opportunity unashamedly to talk about their loved
one with someone who understands. The preparation part would be a huge help to me and
any others who would be tasked with leading the funeral. We are after all a family.
As the priest involved I would still visit the family and with the support of the team still be
involved in the ongoing work of supporting families through grieving times. However the
team would be a great sounding board and link to the ongoing life of our parish community
for those who may not have had the graces and blessings that we know because of our
links to this worshipping family, or for those people whose extended family are elsewhere.
I would also be hopeful that a strategic times of the year, All Souls Day or May maybe, we
could gather to remember those who have died with a Memorial Mass and supper.
Let me know what you think, and particularly if you think that this is something you might
feel you can be a part of in some way.
Kind regards,

Greg
