Description by Hector Bellman

This melancholic piece was written in 1880 and dedicated to Hermann Ritter, inventor of the viola alto (of
greater dimensions than the usual one, which is too small for its pitch). There exists also in versions for
violin and piano, cello and piano and solo piano. A short work, only four minutes long. it opens with a
declamatory phrase of the viola without accompaniment. Then, a dialogue between the two instruments
ensues. A modest climax is followed by a short cadenza of the viola. A pensive passage in harmonics
leads to the quiet ending.
