The Present Continuous Tense

The students in an elementary school classroom are very busy right now. Kim is drawing a picture. Patricia and Holly
are reading a story. Paul and Linda are watching a DVD. Marianne is playing a math game. Fred is working on a science
project.

To talk about what someone is doing right now, use the present continuous tense.

Subject + Is/Are + Main Verb+ ing

Kim is drawing a picture.

Subject + Is/Are + Main Verb+ ing

Patricia and Holly are reading a story.

Kim is drawing a
picture.
Here are some examples with the verbs play, watch, work, talk, listen, and use:

Marianne is playing a math game.

Paul and Linda are watching a DVD.

Fred is working on a science project.

Terry is talking to the teacher.

Frances is listening to a CD.

You have to change the spelling of some verbs before you add ing.

raise = raising take= taking use=using

Here are some examples with the verbs raise, take ,use, and write:

Robert is raising his hand.

Alice is taking a test.

Chris is using the Internet.

Ben is writing a sentence.
