ACADEMY PROFILE

2.1

Capability

The Airline Academy of Australia is owned and operated by the Royal Queensland Aero Club Limited, the oldest flying school
in Australia. With over 100 years of proud history, the Academy plays a significant role in the Australian aviation industry and
is renowned for excellence in safe, comprehensive aviation training. The Academy is Australias largest member-owned
integrated aviation training organisation and is one of only 7 flight training providers appointed globally to deliver ab-initio
training through the Jeppesen Flight Training Network, which is part of the Boeing Pilot Development Programme.
The Academy is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering pilot, aircraft maintenance engineer and flight attendants
courses to Australian and international students under CRICOS registration number 02416D.

The Academy is renowned for training programmes compliant with the licencing requirements of Australian and
international aviation regulatory authorities. The Academy's specialist aviation professionals can provide advice and
recommend training courses that suit the specific aviation career aspirations of international students and meet the needs of
airline clients. Authority is held by senior Academy flight instructors to deliver training as required under CASA Regulations
(CASR Part 61.T).
2.2

Location

The Academy's training base at Archerfield Airport, 25 minutes from central Brisbane city, provides one of the safest and
most ideal flight training environments in the world. The Airport has a manned control tower, year round good weather and
no large aircraft. It also provides direct access to ideal training grounds over a range of terrain and beautiful locations such as
the famous Gold Coast region.
The Academys second campus is located in Toowoomba at Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (WTB) - a large, modern airport
that services Queenslands south western mining industry and Australias second largest agricultural basin. This dynamic
region offers a wealth of opportunities for commercial pilots and as the campus is located on the western side of the Great
Diving Range, students enjoy some of the most advantageous weather conditions in the country.
2.3

Facilities

The Academy campus buildings enter directly onto the Archerfield and Wellcamp airport grounds where students have
access to our extensive fleet of single and multi-engine aircraft. Within the campuses, students enjoy multiple lecture and
training rooms, an operational aircraft maintenance hangar, on-site training aids, an iPad lounge, several professional
simulators, a boutique espresso bar, kitchen facilities, bar and lounge facilities and at Archerfield, a pilot supply shop, and a
memorabilia centre which showcases the history of the Royal Queensland Aero Clubs 100 years in the industry. The local
multi-cultural community at each campus provides a complete range of support services including a number of
accommodation options.

OUR AIRCRAFT FLEET

The Academy operates an extensive fleet of training aircraft (both analogue and glass cockpit) and several professional flight
simulators. A variety of aircraft type options are available for students within the single and twin engine aircraft fleets. This
provides students with flexibility as well as options regarding specialist aircraft for specific endorsements and ratings.
The Academy utilises the Cessna 172 SP (C172SP) model aircraft, a four seat single engine aircraft powered by a Lycoming
IO-360-L2A fuel; injected 4 cylinder 160hp engine with a fixed pitch propeller. It is fitted with a Garmin 1000 (G1000) glass
cockpit and has fixed undercarriage. Glass cockpit experience is encouraged for those wishing to progress to CPL or above.
The Academy has an extensive fleet and as such, a range of other aircraft types and variants can be utilised by students for
their integrated CPL programme. Following is a sample of some of our aircraft and simulators regularly used by students.

The Academy RA-Aus Recreational Pilot Certificate programme is a complete certificate programme leading specifically to a
certification under RA-Aus for recreational flying only. Candidates who are considering future training towards a formal pilot
licence can apply for credit towards the flight hours requirements in non-integrated programmes but should seek further
advice prior to undertaking this programme. This certificate is registered under RA-Aus, not CASA.
RA-Aus is a training and operational structure which is administered by Recreational Aviation Australia Inc. It provides lower
cost and easier access to quality aircraft operations and flight training solutions for the recreational aviator. Further
information about RA-Aus is available at www.raa.asn.au.
This programme is delivered by the prestigious Royal Queensland Aero Club part of the organisation and includes
membership. Flight training is usually conducted in a modern Sling 2 two seater single engine RA-Aus aircraft.

The Academys Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) programme provides training from beginner level. The RPL entitles pilots to
fly aircraft for which they hold a rating for private purposes and carry non-fare paying passengers. The Academys RPL
programme is the first stage of a formal pilot licence and is therefore included within out PPL, CPL and MECIR programmes
but can be taken on its own. The RPL allows recreation flight within designated training areas only as it does not include the
navigation training phase. The navigation phase is included in the full PPL course but can be requested as an optional extra
for the RPL course at additional cost. Please enquire for further details.

The Academy Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) programme provides training from beginner level. It is also a natural
progression point for students who have completed their PPL. A CPL entitles pilots to fly aircraft for which they hold a rating
for private or commercial purposes and hence carry revenue generating passengers or freight.
The course includes general, cross country navigation, night and instrument flying and utilises the Cessna 172 R and Cessna
172 RG.
The base course is an integrated CPL programme utilising analogue aircraft. Package upgrades are available as below:

Glass upgrade (substitutes the Cessna 172 R and RG with the Cessna 172 SP and Tecnam P2006T)
200 hour non-integrated analogue upgrade (increases the course to 148hrs briefing time / 210.5hrs flight/sim
time)

Please note that recognition of prior learning can be considered for those with previous qualifications or experience.
In order to satisfy CASA minimum requirements students may require additional hours of aeronautical experience. These
hours can be obtained through completion of other Academy programmes such as Aerobatics, Night Visual Flight Rules
(NVFR) or commencement of instrument rating training.

The Academy Diploma of Aviation programme provides training from beginner level. The Diploma, our most popular
programme, offers students the opportunity to package their CPL with a Multi-Engine endorsement (ME) and a Command
Instrument Rating (CIR). The CIR allows pilots to fly in full Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) day or night in any
operation permitted by the grade of pilots licence held. Combined, the CPL and MECIR provide graduates with greatly
enhanced skills and employability.
The MECIR training is also available on a student visa as a separate programme over 13wks for students who already have a
recognised commercial pilot licence. The cost for the 13 week programme (excludes CPL training) is $22,500 which is
scheduled as a deposit of $4,500 and two instalments of $9,000 (approx.). Please contact us for full details.
CASA requires candidates for the MECIR to undertake extensive additional flight training, theory, simulator time and
examinations. The MECIR course includes air work and instrument flying and utilises the Tecnam P2006T aircraft.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

5.1

Pricing Methodology

Fees for flight training are indicative estimates only as each student learns at a different pace.
International students are required to pay an initial instalment as per their offer letter. This initial instalment includes
membership in the RQAC and an international student registration fee, which is deducted from the students account upon
commencement. Any other noted inclusion will also be deducted from the students account at commencement. Thereafter,
students are required to pay in advance of training as per the fee schedule indicated on the offer letter. Adjustments for
reduced or additional training will be made in the final instalment Statements of the student's account are available on
request. These statements will reconcile the advance payments with invoices for each lesson or ground school session. All
time duration is determined by the instructor for charging purposes. This process can be explained in detail by Academy staff
to ensure transparency.
Payment may be by cash, credit card (for which relevant credit card surcharge will be applicable) or electronic funds transfer
(EFT). If EFT, bank account details for the Academy are included on the enrolment form and reference details will be
required to be included with the EFT to aid reconciliation.
The programme prices provided are AU$ and are based on currently available input prices, such as fuel, which are updated at
the start of the month. Exact prices for any supplementary flying required will be determined by monthly aircraft hire rates
applicable at the time that the supplementary flying occurs.
Students are not permitted to continue flight training if they exceed the available funds in their Academy account.
5.2

Visas

Student visas are available for full time enrolment into the Commercial Pilot Licence (Certificate IV in Aviation) and the Multi
Engine Command Instrument Rating (Diploma of Aviation) programme. These programmes can be packaged under a single
student visa along with approved pathway English language providers.
5.3

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

OSHC is health insurance that helps international students meet the costs of:

medical and hospital care

some prescription medicines

emergency ambulance services

Australia's Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) requires that Student visa holders maintain OSHC for
the duration of their Student visa, unless exempted under reciprocal government arrangements.
Some students from Sweden, Norway and Belgium are covered under those arrangements. All other Student visa holders
must have OSHC. The Academy arranges OSHC as part of the enrolment procedure, though students are welcome to
arrange their own OSHC independently if they prefer.
5.4

Recognition for Prior Learning

For candidates with prior training or flight experience, the Academy is able to provide advance standing to ensure that
training is not duplicated unnecessarily. As estimate of advance standing can be provided in the offer letter upon successful
application. To gain advanced standing, applicants must supply flight training and experience records such as log book.
5.5

Studying Part Time

International students are eligible to undertake Academy programmes provided they hold a visa that allows them time to
reside in Australia and study. Fee estimates and deposit requirements remain the same for part time enrolment.
5.6

Syllabus

The Academy provides a recommended syllabus for all flight training programmes which is realistic and compliant with the
relevant regulatory requirements, safe practice, suitable student learning approach and years of pilot training experience.
It is expected that students will responsibly undertake extensive self-study (homework) of background theory with guided
assistance from an instructor. Self-study may be undertaken at home or at the Academy study lounge where internet
connection and student support is provided.
Programme durations provided are estimates only (based on full time attendance) and may vary either way depending on the
speed and style of learning of the student, as course assessment is competency based. Some lessons may also be combined
and it should be noted that briefings will include relevant theory and technique applicable to the student's learning level so
may also vary in length.

ENQUIRIES & ENROLMENTS

6.1

Entry Requirements

Academic:

Senior High School completion equivalent to Australian Year 12 preferred. Students who wish to
commence training below year 12 are welcome to apply and will be considered case by case.

Age:

18yrs. Younger students are welcome to apply and will be considered case by case.

English:

5.5 IELTS or equivalent or completion of an approved English language pathway programme.

Industry:

To undertake the programme, students will be required to satisfy the following aviation industry prerequisites and considerations:

Hold an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) which is issued by CASA.

Hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
Hold the relevant class of medical certificate. The Academy strongly recommends that students gain
a class 1 medical as early as possible to ensure they are medically eligible to be issued with the class
required.
Hold an Aircraft Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency (ACROP).
Satisfy the aviation industry English language proficiency requirements to at least an ICAO level 4.
Be at least 17 years of age at the time of the PPL flight test.
Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the CPL flight test.
If prior flying has not been completed at the Academy, the student will be required to undertake an
assessment to determine the students current level of competency in relation to the proposed
programme syllabus.

Academy staff can assist students with the process to address these requirements and provide advice and further
information accordingly. Additional guidance material is available on the CASA website www.casa.gov.au.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend that applicants undergo medical testing for pilots in their home country or ideally,
with an Australian CASA approved medical examiner. A list of overseas approved medical examiners is available on the CASA
website www.casa.gov.au.

Upon receipt of your application form and certified supporting documentation, if eligible, we will issue a formal letter of offer
that details the programme, estimated (indicative) fees, commencement dates and other important details for your
consideration. We do not charge an application fee.
