CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SHARED PATHWAYS

Shared paths are used by cyclists, walkers, joggers and
pushchairs. To help everyone enjoy themselves please
follow the Code of Conduct for shared pathways.

With its beautiful coastline, bush clad hills and parks,

Porirua City offers a wealth of wonderful walks and
cycle tracks. Whether youre a fitness enthusiast who
loves a challenge or someone who simply enjoys a
stroll, theres a walking track thats right for you.

1. Keep Left: As far as practical, except when passing another user going your direction (pass on the right). Go
in single file when other users are present. Step off the
path when stopping.
2. Consider Others: Control your speed, slow down and
use caution when approaching or overtaking other users. Look behind when changing positions. Cyclists use
hand signals. Dont assume others can see or hear you.

Rock hop along the Porirua coast and see the fabulous
Marlborough Sounds at sunset. Spot the rare wildfowl in
our bird sanctuary, or see how the whitebait are running.
Follow the footsteps of the famous Te Rauparaha and his
tribe or follow the old coach roads of the Colonial settlers
as you visit our historic sites. There is something for
everyone along the way.

3. Giving Way: Cyclists always give way to pedestrians. If

necessary give way to uphill users.
4. Cyclists warn others when passing: ring your bell or call
Passing on your right before overtaking.

HINTS FOR WALKING AND CYCLING

1. Check the weather forecast. Dress for the expected
weather conditions. Carry a lightweight jacket or
jersey in case the weather conditions change.
