Growing Wise
At the Episcopal Womens Ministries Fall Retreat
September 25
252 7, 2015
at the Waycross Conference Center
with the Rev. Jean Denton as retreat leader

In an age of easy access to information, we come to think of facts as knowledge.

But facts and data are not wisdom. Wisdom is deeper, more complex, more precious. We read of it in Proverbs: Wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire
cannot compare with her.
In this years womens retreat, we will ask the question What is wisdom? and
consider many others that flow from it. How does our Scripture speak of wisdom?
Is it a gift? How do we obtain wisdom? What happens if we find wisdom? Who
are the ones who have shaped us? Whats the relationship of wisdom to time? To
suffering? Does wisdom come with age? With experience? With spiritual pracDivine Wisdom
by Eileen McGuckin tices? How do we share wisdom?
Drawing on the wisdom of the ages as well as contemporary thought, we will explore what it means to
grow wise. We will do this at our table talk, through our worship, in personal journaling, through poetry, by experiencing different spiritual practicesand even in sharing a movie night together. There is
time for making and renewing friendships as well as free time for rest.

Columbia University, Jeans first career was in nursing. She has served
as a consultant to the National Episcopal Church and as director of
National Episcopal Health Ministries. She has taught courses in

taught for 10 years on the health faculty of CREDO, a clergy wellness
program of the Church Pension fund. Her book is Good is the Flesh:
Body, Soul and Christian Faith and was published by Morehouse Publishing in 2005.
Ordained to the diaconate in 1992 and many years later to the priesthood, Jean served at
St. Pauls Episcopal in Indianapolis. Her spiritual direction training was through the
Hayden Institute in Canada. Jean left full-time ministry to be more present with her

year and also assists at Indianapolis Christ Church Cathedral.
